The great Ustad Vilayat Khan has died in hospital
in Mumbai. I've been unable to find a mention on
a web site, though I've not looked that hard.
Here is a link to a scan for the obituary from the
New York Times, it's about 0.5M.

http://www.copsey-family.org/~allenc/vk.jpg

I was fortunate enough to see him recently in New York
and had hoped to attend the concert mentioned in the
obituary. He was accompanied then by Zakir Hussain, who
despite his own stature deferred entirely to the Ustad.
The set was too short, but that was my only criticism,
and both musicians seemed to be having a great time.

A great loss....

A rather long article in the NY Times on copyright

(The NY Times archives its articles after a few days

A UK internet company (CD Wow) was recently obliged to
stop sourcing CD's from outside Europe where they are
considerably cheaper by the threat of legal action by
the BPI, Britains own RIAA. They were, apparently,

I got to see Bombay Dreams a week or two ago, and
was disappointed. However the Great British Public
seem to like it. The evening performance was fully
booked and the matinee couldn't have been much fuller,
and it is by no means a small theatre.

The bright lighting leached the colour from the
performers faces and I had the feeling of watching
people pretending to be Indian. But thinking about
it, I doubt that many of the performers had spent
much, if any, time in India and certainly had never
spent any time living in a Bombay slum. An Indian
name does not an Indian make.

Although the music is entirely credited to ARR, it is
more Lloyd-Webber than Rahman and I think that was
the cause of my disappointment. In a musical one
doesn't expect serious plots and sub-plots, and
character development is not a first priority but
one does have to enjoy the music, and it simply did
not grab me.

The rest of the audience seemed to disagree with me
and I don't doubt there are those who've seen it
many times; with full houses so long after its
opening it must be doing something right. Perhaps
I'm just a miserable curmudgeon.

Recently I was in India and came across a couple of
cool albums by Sandeep Khare (Thanks to Shriram :)-

. Ayushyavar Bolu Kahi (also features Salil Kulkarni)

This prompted me to listen to his old one -
. Divas Ase Ki (features Shailesh Ranade)

All poetry & music composition is by Sandeep himself.
Excellent work.
Good guitar work (not usually seen in marathi songs)
in a couple of songs.

When I posted the list of concerts in NY I included one
by Wasifuddin Dagar without knowing who he was. I've
learnt a little bit more since then. The NY concert is
one of a tour of concerts/workshops/talks he is doing
over the latter half of Sept through Oct. I don't have
any other details so if you are in the US and want to
catch him you'll have to check your local listings.

If, like me, you don't know of him, Raga Recordings have
a couple of MP3s:-
http://www.ragarecords.com/
they are big, 16MB and 9MB. the alap is worth the
download.

WNYC has a Realaudio programme on Dhrupad music which
features WD:-
http://www.wnyc.org/shows/newsounds/episodes/08182002

Both sites have other stuff that might be of interest.

Hi
I too heard Nitin's album Human. As Allen says it's an excellent fusion of
Indian and western styles... Particularly liked a track named 'Heer'.
I think Nitin has matured a lot... his last album 'Prophesy' was really a
good amalgamation of sounds from various regions. One of the Indians to look
out for on the global music scene.
Thanks

A not infrequent frustration in my life (one among
many but this is not the forum :) is how often I find
that I've just missed a concert by someone I'd like
to see - A R Rahman in New York, Bikram Ghosh in
Nottingham to name but two and these are the ones that
I know I've missed. So I wondered if this list could
serve as a channel for notifications of upcoming events...

So for those lucky enough to be in New York:-

There is a 'Music Festival of India' in the latter
half of September. It includes:-

Vilayat Khan with Zakir Hussain and others on Sep 13th
(A must, surely!)

Wasifuddin Dagar singing Dhrupad on Sep 25th

T.N. Krishnan & N. Rajam on Oct 10th

Ram Narayan & Family on Nov 1st

Shobana & Company dance on Nov 15th

Full details are at:-
http://www.heartheworld.org/WMICAL/Calendar.asp

There is also music from other parts of the world
and all in all it looks to be a rather interesting
series, if you happen to be in New York....

Also in New York:

There is a benefit called Healing the Divide which
includes Anoushka Shankar along with Philip Glass,
the Kronos Quartet, Foday, Muso Suso, and others,
as well as the Dalai Lama:-

http://www.healingthedivide.org/concert/index.php4?fuseaction=home.about

Now if someone in New York or Bangaalore would tell
me what is happening in Nottingham I'd be much obliged
:)

The south Indian film industry too had its moments of glory. A R
Rahman song and background score in Tamil film Kannathil Muthamittal
fetched him the award for Best Music Direction. Vairamuthu bagged the
Best Lyric Writer award for the same film. The jury said Rahman's
number rose "above the conventions of film songs to reach the realms
of poetry".

Thought I'd drop a line to mention that I recently
bought Nitin Sawhney's new album, Human.

The first Sawhney album I bought was Beyond Skin
and was in the Jazz section and reasonably so, though
other stores put him in 'Dance'. His previous albums
did have a drum and bass type influence but I
hardly classify his music as Dance.

Anyway, Human is more pop oriented, despite pop being
a category I avoid almost as much as rap et al, I
find this an attractive album. The Indian elements
are as strong as ever, it being an excellent fusion
of Indian and Western styles and elements. Despite
Natacha Atlas singing on one track and another sounding
very like 'Only You' a hit in the UK for Yazoo and
the Flying Pickets, I doubt it will yield a hit single,
which is good, something like that could ruin a fine
musician.

A fine album.

Also, I was recommended an album by Paban Das, the
only one I found was Real Sugar which he made with
Sam Mills. It's 'OK' but short of the enthusiasm
expressed. There has been another, Gravitation, which
might be the one intended. Anyone know of it?

Yeah.. that impression is understandable...
More western music and english lyrics..
But I think music's pretty much in sync with the
movie theme ...
And sure it should be a BOOMER on boom-boxes rather than

Ale Ale, Boom Boom are kind of quick winners..
For other songs a few more rounds may be required...

BTW looks like another ARR tamil release came and went unnoticed..
