Once upon a time there existed a lively group for discussion
on music called - Doregama!
Launched in 1999, the group was very active for 2-3 years before
diminishing in the dust over time.
But those were the years when one name was making most headlines
here - A R Rahman! We even waged some bad wars over that name :)!
With careers and families, my guess is that most of us no longer have time to conduct Doregama awards anymore :-).
While 'Slumdog' portrays a dark and sad side of Mumbai, it is great to see movies about India and music from India be recognized internationally. It was quite a moment to see AR Rahman go up on stage to receive his Oscars. Seeing Freida Pinto, Dev Patel, and the little kids from the movie go up on stage to receive the best picture Oscar was quite a sight as well.
Congratulations to Danny Boyle, AR, Fredia, Dev, and the rest of the crew for all of their Oscars last night.

Although I am thrilled that ARR won the award and has received a well deserved recognition, I think the background score is pretty average by his standards. Unfortunately, some of his better soundtracks have gone unnoticed in the past. For example his work for Warriors of Heaven and Earth is far more superior, and is on par with most Western classical music composers.
I had seen the movie a couple of months back and found it to be strickly OK. I did not expect it to run away with so many Oscars. In India the movie has not evoked a very positive response as well. Also, I think it is safe to say that without Danny Boyle and good movie-marketing tactics in the US, it would not have won so many awards.

But I take your words about the background score...
But I have listened to the song tracks and
I also felt that the two that were nominated are probably not the best of the album.
Mausam Escape and Dreams on Fire/Lathika's theme are my favorites.
As you said it, I am taking it as a big recognition for all these years of his relentless
work and dedication to music so far.
And he was so humble in his victory speech!
Cheers!
