welcome to the group. :-)

the podcast is growing very fast. in just about 4 months we have
almost 1200 subscribers and over 11000 hits. if you know some duran
fans or people who like music, art, films, etc. tell them about the
show!! i'd love to get over 20,000 hits by sometime in march!

Hi to all,
Forgive my delay (only just listened)but i wanted to comment about
the review by stephen hawkins on a recent podcast - (no offence to
stephen hawkins)
The gig was abosulety fantastic - a real treat as they played a lot
of the lesser known stuff - yes a few people we talked to after the
show were a little bemused and annoyed that the band didnt play this
or that particular hit song - but wow!! what set list!! having seen
the guys at st andrews and been totally blown away i thought that
nothing could top it - but earls court was a real thank you by D2 to
all of us die hards that have supported them throughout. I suppose
that it boils down to the fact that you can't please all of the
people all of the time, but I wonder how many other bands would would
take the time to even think about doing something a little out of the
ordinary.(I wonder if this guy had only ever listened to 'Greatest')
Who cares if the earls court wasn't full - I dont really have
symapathy for the fools who tried to rip people on ebay and then got
stuck with the tickets.
As for the sound - awesome, as for getting older, wiser, a little
forgetful, and having a few suits that dont fit quite as well as they
did - well i suppose that happens to us all at some stage!

Horloge Biologique - A product of the flourishing Quebec movie
industry

Hey Derek!

I love your Podcast! Where have you been? Are you on Hiatus for the
holiday season? Just thought you should know that your podcast has
been missed. BTW - In one of your Podcast you asked for suggestions. I
have no idea what made me think about this but ... I was wondering if
there were any good Duran Duran jokes out there? I remember two. They
are kind of lame but remember I was a screaming 13 year old Duranie who
would laugh at anything. Thinking back about younger Duranie Days
these two jokes made me giggle. I thought I would share. Not sure
where I heard them or who made these up but here it goes:

Q: How many Duran Duran Members does it take to change a light bulb?
A: One to change the light bulb and the other four to make the martinis.

Q: Why did Nick change his last name from Bates to Rhodes?
A: Because if he ever had servants he did not want to be called Master
Bates. :0)

Hope I made you laugh. Anyone else got lame Duran Duran jokes they
want to share?

Happy Holidays to everyone in the yahoo group!

Hey, what's going on with the Duran Duran podcast? It seems to have been taken

some jerk ranting about Spandau Ballet!! Why was he allowed to say all that

Spandau being better than Duran? It went onto my iPod without me knowing and I

hey all, here's a book review written by our pal catherine at the
duran duran timeline. (www.durandurantimeline.com)
--
"Duran Duran Notorious: The Unauthorized Biography"
a review by artslave

Duran Duran fans have been waiting a long time for a serious
biography about the band -- there were a handful of throwaway
paperbacks in the early eighties (including a rare one by now-famous
author Neil Gaiman), but absolutely nothing in the dry years since.
Until the band started accruing Lifetime Achievement awards last
year, publishers wouldn't even consider the idea. That's why the
fan base has gotten so excited about "Duran Duran Notorious: The
Unauthorized Biography", by Steve Malins, and the as-yet-unnamed
authorized book by rock biographer Stephen Davis, due sometime next
year. Malins, a journalist with Q Magazine, has done well-regarded
books on Depeche Mode and Gary Numan, so the expectations have been
raised even higher.

On the whole, the 280-page book does not disappoint. It carefully
reconstructs Duran Duran history from a number of sources, mainly
the hundreds of newspaper and magazine articles published about the
band over the years. The most interesting part is hearing different
perspectives on the familiar tale of Duran Duran's many ups and
downs; Malins peppers the narrative with fascinating bits of his
interviews with former manager Paul Berrow, agent Rob Hallett, video
art director Marcello Anciano (Russel Mulcahy's assistant), and many
more.

The most involving parts of the book are the early chapters,
describing the atmosphere of late 1970s Birmingham, the evolution of
the New Romantic movement, and the determination of the fledgling
band members. Knowing where they're going, it's a delight to watch
a skinny, spectacled geek and a spoiled young king of style struggle
to make a dream come true. The story only gets richer as the cast
grows.

The pace of the book picks up with the growth of the band's success -
- although the facts come fast and furious, the later chapters
aren't as successful at capturing the internal atmosphere of the
Duran camp -- probably because constant touring and recording left
fewer personal traces for Malins to weave into his history.
Likewise, John Taylor's drug problems and the band's interpersonal
struggles are dealt with only peripherally, since very little of
this made it into print. There are some interesting comments from
Warren Cuccurullo that shed some light on the end of the Rhodes-
Cuccurullo-Le Bon incarnation of Duran Duran, but it doesn't seem
quite enough for the fan struggling to understand all the shifts in
band dynamics at the end of the 20th century.

However, "Notorious" does a nice job of reviewing the music itself --
each album from Duran Duran to Astronaut is treated to at least a
few paragraphs describing influences, memorable songs and more.
Here at last Malins treats us to some of his own opinions on key
over- and underrated songs in the catalog.

Overall, the book is a very worthy effort to weave every notable
thing that's been printed about Duran Duran in the last twenty-five
years into a fun, readable package. That it doesn't go much beyond
its source material is both its strength and its drawback. Malins
doesn't engage in rumor or speculation about a band that he hasn't
interviewed in person, but neither does he provide a real third-
person perspective on the events that he's relating. Still, while
longtime fans will be disappointed by the lack of new revelations,
or the lack of greater depth and analysis, those who don't have
every fact about Duran Duran memorized will find "Notorious" a
goldmine of information, presented in a crisp unbiased style, by a
talented journalist with a genuine respect for the band of a hundred
thousand dreams.
