Jusst got back from Northampton. Fantastic gig! Many thanks to Phil
and Alex for putting the event on, and for the beer and cake
afterwards. I listened to the Sporadic 3 album on the drive back,
another nice collection and well worth buying. Thanks for the other
CDs as well Phil!!

As for the gig, it was a bit like something from 1983, just Vini and
Bruce, no Kier, so no bass or keyboards. Setlist was something like:
All that love and maths can do (with violin from a nervous looking
Retro Spankee)
(pause to fix Vini's effects unit)
Sketch for Summer
Gibson Blues (aka Blue Period)
Jacqueline
Gun
Dig a big hole
Salford Harmonics
Missing Boy
The Beggar
Requiem for my mother
Revolver (featuring contributions from Retro Spankees on toy
ukeleli, percussion and bunch of keys (!), Phil Cleaver on Triangle,
and the compere lying on the floor)

[not sure about the running order, but I thing that is correct]

The highlight of the gig far me were The Beggar and Missing Boy
which featured some really nice extra guitar work by Vini to cover
for the absence of keyboards.

The gig was filmed using three cameras, and given the presence of a
ambience microphone by the mixing board, also carefully recorded.
Hopefully the gig will see the light of day in the fullness of time.

I bumped into John Cooper, James Nice, Bryan Burford Kevin Lee and
several others many of whom will be at SXXV next week.

I forgot to add that the free CD is also excellent, and worth paying
for if you couldn't make the gig and Phil has any left over to sell.

Consider this a quasi-temporary review as I can't recall much from
the gig due to root canal pain. Bruce was in fine form and i think a
former producer of Vinni's played bass. He played his new Jimmy Page
custom guitar on the third piece. Can't remember the title but it
was laboured and I don't think he pulled it off. 2 rotters from the
front row then pointedly stood up and left, I think that turned
Vinni off somewhat. He made the usual comment of "it's just a job"
around this time and that knifed me in the guts cause where is the
justice in the beauty.

started off with Requiem for a Father on his usual guitar but it
sounded so wonderful that it definitely was worth a re-recording,
(perhaps? there was some intonation of messidor in it.) If someone
can persuade Vinni of recording that I'd put up with root canal pain
again. Can't recall 2nd track, new guitar on third. Then a couple of
standards (i think) were Beautiful lies? defo Seeline woman and a
slow The Beggar. He went back to the new guitar and it suddenly took
on a life of its own - the guitar was bright and had a rich
intonation.

As for the rest Bruce did a lot of work and played brilliantly, the
bassist interacted with Bruce, felt Bruce kept the gig going really.
I can't recall much else as I was almost passing out with pain. My
apols for not recalling the bassist and the other tracks. So pls
delete this when someone posts a fuller a picture. Thanks.

Just typical! They go to the trouble of recording and filming the gig but for
some
reason there's no electric piano..?!

For me, a DC gig is incomplete without Vini tickling the keys of his Fender
Rhodes...

Big thanks to all those who turned up to our party - the support was much
appreciated ! It was lovely to see so many people enjoy all the acts - not
just Vini but also gnac and the retro spankees. John Coopers Ceysmatic site
pretty-well sums up the events although I have to say that I was far worse
for the beer than even the photo suggests !!! Ahem...

Also special thanks to those who came great distances and others who sent
very kind emails and texts after the show - you know who you all are -
thanks - it makes doing what we do all worth it !!!

There will be some news to follow soon - but I am having a couple of weeks
off now - We have had a busy few weeks and real work gets some priority
again !

Great gig, and nice to meet some people whose names I mostly didn't catch,
and if I did, can't remember (blame the Red Stripe). It was a pity I had to
run off for a train, but given that the free Budvar had just arrived,
perhaps just as well. (Whoever it was got me a pint before that, I'll get
you one back next time).

An excellent set, I thought, although my heart sank when Vini's magic box
broke down at the beginning. One of the best Jacqueline's I've seen (but
then I say that every time- watching Vini and Bruce fire off each other
during it is an almost religious experience, I find). The closing Revolver
was fantastic, with some masterful triangling by Phil!

The Retro Spankees on first were very impressive, and very funny. I got the
album the same time as New Buffalo, and it was overshadowed a bit, but I'll
be going back for a closer listen after seeing what they can do live.

Nice to finally see Mark Tranmer live (though a shame he hadn't dragged
Roger Quigley along to sing a bit. But then the MGs haven't released on
Kooky, have they?)

I have some very blurry, no-flash photos, which I'll stick in the files
section when I get back home.

Call me a pedant if you like but I feel the need to set the record straight over
recent
comments regarding Vini & Bruce playing without keyboards being "like the old
days".

Even Bruce & Vini's earliest gigs together featured Vini's trusty Fender Rhodes
electric
piano and I'd guess that the number of gigs where it hasn't appeared would not
make
it into double figures. True, the Rhodes was not present at the very early
Durutti gigs,
but then neither was Bruce...

I am guilty of the "like the old days" theme in my post about the
northampton gig. What I really was trying to say was it was VR and
BM on stage (like the old days). No brass section, no viola, no
bloke on sampler, no Kier on bass....

I spoke to VR before the gig. He seemed tense about the absence of
his bass player and the fact it was just Bruce and he. IMHO this did
not affect the quality of the performance, but simply made it novel,
or different. I missed the Fender Rhodes, but on the other hands the
improvisations used to fill in for its absence *MORE* than
compensated. In other words because it was just Vini and Bruce, they
had to work a little harder and IMHO the performance was better for
it. Two guys, one guitar (and effects box), one drumkit and 4 stage
lights, just like 1982/83 save for the lack of the keyboard.....and
AHW for that matter.

On the other hand the ensemble approach to Revolver certainly made
up for the absence of Kier on bass in terms of sheers numbers and
will to "get it done"...:)

Fair enough. Like I said, I'm just being pedantic. For me, one of the highlights
of a
Durutti gig is when Vini effortlessly alternates between guitar and keyboard, as
in The
Beggar. Hard for me to conceive that a Rhodes-less gig could be satisfactory,
but I'll
have to take your word for it (at least until I see/hear the results of the
recording -
any plans for that Phil?).

Interesting point Olan makes there....

I wonder when the last time was that Vin and Bruce only played a show
together ???

I actually agree with Olan maybe I have clouded my judgement due to stress
relief jubilation Budvar Guinness and Jack Daniels and organising the show
but it had the Œfeelš of an earlier show and it was the way he approached
the songs which was interesting....

I do feel that he would not be happy doing well I mean comfortable doing a
solo show Brucešs coercion though was a great move !

However... Vini came ito the dressing room and said he wished all shows were
like this and how chilled he was being amongst what he felt were friends...

Finally I never thought that I would play triangle with the durutti column
!

Best

Phil

Hi all,

I was also at the Bristol gig, which I enjoyed. Thanks for the set-
list, Eric. I think Vini also played Pigeon/Albatross as the first
encore to "calm me down", he said, (he crouched on the floor for
that one). Bruce came in on drums part way through and Kier on
cymbals which gave us a nice comic interlude. Does anyone else
remember this?

The acoustics in the hall were not all that great for me, a bit
hollow, but that did not get in the way of the music too much. The
audience was really quite large. The venue holds about 560 people
and it seemed about half full to me, maybe a little more. It was
disappointing to see a few people walk out, I guess it was not what
they expected, but the wooden floor and general lighting made this
very obvious and I guess off-putting to the band. The free
program/sheet was comprehensive and well prepared.

Bruce seemed on great form and enjoying himself as always. I love to
watch him and his connection with Vini; it makes it really special
for me. Kier did a good job on bass and samples and I think Vini
seemed quite relaxed. The usual quip before Jacqueline along the
lines of "we have been playing this for ever and will keep
practising it until we get it right." They can play this as much as
they like, I always enjoy it and it sounded good to me.

The gig got more rocky as it went on, I prefer the gentler approach
as the guitar skills is more evident. It was over way too soon, of
course, but its best to leave 'em wanting more, I guess.

I was not able to go to Northampton, so I was disappointed that the
new subscription CD was not available at Bristol. I hope to be able
to buy a copy soon (hint-hint Kooky).

The support band, Westcott and Rodway, were very enjoyable. Very
skilful flamenco guitar and piano combination. I would go and see
them again, given a chance. You can find them on MySpace.

Thanks to Vini, Bruce, Kier and the crew for a good night. Well
worth the trip up from Exeter. Hope to see you again soon.

Mick

Language Sergio !

I spoke to Vini tonight in good spirits and very happy with the
show/party....

I asked him about the last time just Bruce and himself played together and
he too had no idea !

I notice from Uncut's review that the new Beatles remix LP thing features
Tomorrow Never Knows mixed with Within Without You...

Wonder where they might have got that idea from?

I sent an email to Phil Jones to see if maybe there was a lawsuit
there...to me that is a blatent rip off. I was stunned to hear about
that.

Instead of a photobook, why not a DVD? s.

Looks like there may be a CD with new material involved, that would be
good. Let's see.

On the cd for the photobook, wouldn't it be the piece he played for the
tramway? There was some talk of it being released.

I've been a member here for a while, but kept silent
regarding the book project while we worked on it. I
just--five minutes ago--received another set of
photographs from Rachel.

The book will be a unique, very personal sort of
memoir. It will contain, lyrics, original poetry,
photographs, comments and observations from Vini, and
more. The book is a portait of Vini, the people in his
life, his and Rachel's art, and of Manchester itself.

It will be a beautiful hardbound book with, let's just
say, a few exciting extras!

Greetings,

Can't find the original message, but from what I've read a few weeks ago, a
new Durutti Column cd was to be released around this month - but I have yet
to find any reference to it - so, has it been released (or, if not, when
will it)? Through Artful? Through Kooky? Any info will be more than welcome!

cheers, sergio, rio.
