Hi all....
Did anyone go?
What did he play?
Was it a good set?
Did Bruce make a surprise appearance?
I would have loved to have gone, but I was on nights and it was
impossible to get back to London before my shift.... bah humbug!
Lets hope Vini's so broke he has to do a tour....
Anyway, enough ranting.... I hope those who went had a good time and
I'd appreciate any feedback (or a CDR of the gig... or the Jazz Cafe
gig, which had to be one of the best I have ever seen) .....
John
I made the trip from London to see Vini play in this rather bizarre
church-hall setting. It wasn't a Vini Reilly solo gig at all, as it
turned out. A couple of days before it had been upgraded to a full DC
affair with Bruce and Kier in attendance.
I think a lot of the local Lewes crowd (and those there for the week-
long guitar festiveal) were expecting a big accoustic guitar love-in
and were a bit taken a back when Vini started making "a hell of a
noise" (his words).
Unfortuately at times that's exactly what we got - the accoustics in
the venue were poor, Vini said himself he wasn't playing well, and
the set list was the same as the Jazz Cafe (which I'm afriad was not
my favourite) - lots of overdrive-ridden songs with him singing (with
the usual effects).
Of course, there were great bits too. Vini's first encore was "For
Belgian Friends", played on an old SG which I'm guessing was probably
used on the original, and that was fantastic (I believe that song has
just been sampled for a chart song which may explain why he's playing
it again).
The standards: Jacqueline, Missing Boy, The Beggar, and Tomorrow were
great and he played some other nice treats such as Organ Donor. And,
at least there was no rap songs!
Overall: Vini seems to be on good form and, at times, played the most
amazing stuff - reminding me why I love the music so much - but was
it the best showcase of his phenomenal talent? Probably not. Would I
have enjoyed it if I didn't love the band already? Not sure.
I'd be interested to hear what every one else thought of it.

One of my favorite DC track is "sleep will come"...does anybody know
if there is a longer version of that song? Is there only one version?

excellent! thanks. I'd better find room for another CD on the DC shelf...
I wouldn't go getting your hopes up for anything other than a few
CD tracks with breathy introductions by Ms Verity Sharp - but it'll
be interesting to hear which tracks she chooses nevertheless.

I listened until they played "U.S.P." from "The Guitar and Other
Machines." The into mentioned "The Return of the Sporadic Recordings."
You didn't miss anything.

Sadly, U.S.P was the only track -- even then Miss Sharp wrongly
informed all that it was from the "1996 (???) album, the Guitar and
Other Machines".... Although fans of Bulgarian Wedding music and
tabla would have had a nice night's listening.... who knows? maybe
next year we'll get a couple of tracks from "1982's Sex and Death"...

Check out the DC homepage. Album and live happening news....
The whole theatre thing sounds great, might even be as
funny/entertaining/arty-farty as the Factory Classics gigs in 1990.
All we need is some AHW poetry readings prior to the event to
complete the whole thing.......
Still, new album and live stuff-Go Vinni!!!
I know that there are others on this list that trade live concerts of
DC, but I would like to know what some of your favorites are. My top
3 would have to be:
1-)Jan 7, 1981 Live at Rafters, Manchester
2-)Oct 9, 1992 Live at the Mean Fiddler (with Rob Grey)
3-)Oct 12, 2001 Live at the Paradise Garage, Lisbon
Anyone else?

well, I would have to have some to listen to first :-) I can trade an
Adrian Legg bootleg (who I 'discovered' supporting DC at the Greenwich Jazz
festival in about 1986)...
Just joined up a couple of minutes ago...
I notice that there's a DC gig booked for 23rd October in Manchester -
I'd like to tape this if possible and was wondering what Vini's
stance was on this sort of thing. Would there be any possibility of
getting a line from the desk and if so who would I contact to sort it
out?
Maybe I'll see some of you there...
Cheers,
Yousef
What? Any more info on this, it's news to me.

Please let me know!
MM
To all listmembers:
I have been frustrated for a while that there is not a list anywhere
of all the gigs that DC has played. So I took it upon myself to do
some research and compile the first "Unofficial DC Gigography"!
There are of course many many holes in it so, please take the time to
look at it and email me with any corrections, additions, etc.
http://www.geocities.com/mitchellmichael/dcgigography.html
My thanks to all!
Mike

Greenwich Jazz festival, 8th June 1986. Superb.
They also played at the Astoria in London in about 1989 but I have no
memory of the details: between 1987 and 1990 sometime (this might job
someone's memory though...!)
I also saw them at the Bloomsbury just before Obey the Time came out (it
must have been the Obey The Time tour, in fact..:-). But I don't remember
when that was exactly: is that the one you have as launching the Factory
Classics?

Yes I am sure it is the same one.
Thanks for the input. The list has been revised with this information!

it was the day before my birthday, and my French A level, and the day I was
beaten up by a boxer in a pub while out 'celebrating' my birthday.
In case anyone wondered why I remember the date so well...:-)
After some rummaging around, here are some confirmations
and additions to the Gigography (coincidentally covering the 8
times I've seen them - and 2 when I didn't quite...):-
- 11 Sept 82 Deeside Leisure Centre, Chester - Futurama 4
festival
- 2 April 83 The Warehouse, Liverpool (Vini had just bought a
new guitar and, almost apologetically, came back on for an
encore in order to try it out)
- 6 Dec 84 Stanley Theatre, Liverpool University (the Without
Mercy tour - with several additional musicians)
- *14 Sept 87 Manchester Cathedral
- 6 May 88 Bluecoat Arts Centre, Liverpool (ticket #000005!)[Note:
the shot on the back of "Vini Reilly" was taken at this gig - I
recognise the backdrop design and other details. A few feet to
the left and I'd be in the pic!]
- 30 June 89 CANCELLED Bluecoat Arts Centre ("in the garden"),
Liverpool [Note: this was one of their free ticket gigs (I still have
the tickets numbered 0004-0006!). The theory being that if Vini
was too ill to make it, cancelling it at short notice would cause
less trouble. They tried it again in Liverpool a year or two later
(date + venue, anyone?), but due to a combination of poor
publicity and sheer incompetence on my part, I missed it..!]
- 4 Aug 91 Manchester Heaton Park - Cities In The Park festival
(subtitled "in memoriam Martin Hannett")
- 20 Nov 94 Royal Exchange, Manchester (with Peter Hook)
- *14 Sept 98 (according to my ticket stub!) Manchester Cathedral
Out of curiosity (of course), can anyone top my tally of 8 DC gigs?
~ Paul.
So far I have had great responses and great stories, so here is my
thinking....if you also have tickets, handbills, adverts, etc. from
any of these gigs PLEASE scan them and send them to my email address
and I will create a link from that show to these images on my web
page.
Am I creating a monster???
Cheers to all and thanks again!

All I know is:
http://www.manchester.com/ad/html/gigs/gigs.php?listing=date&sday=23&smonth=
10&syear=2002&resultNum=5
(that is Mcr Life Cafe 23/10/02.) I'm not sure of the price but someone in
town tonight told me it would be around £15...
So what's the official stance on taping gigs?

It's a tricky area. I know that some bootleggers do manage to
plug into the desk but I suspect it's down to how helpful the
sound engineer is on the night rather than pre-arranging it with
anyone - and I'm always fearful that they'll be unsympathetic, and
I'll end up having my gear confiscated and/or being thrown out of
the gig! So I favour the concealed microphone approach - poorer
quality but less risk.
Don't know what Vini's view on bootlegging is I'm afraid.
I *think* I've read he's okay about it - but bear in mind venues can have
their own policies (though Vini's unlikely to be playing MEN Arena, so it
may not be an issue). As long as no-one's profiting out of it...

I think I might do the stealth thing to be on the safe side.
Any idea how long the sets tend to be?

Around an hour I think, the last couple I saw were anyway. Not sure about
this year's. If you're recording to cassette take a couple, if MD, then one
on mono record would be fine.

There is no gig at the Life Cafe....
Well not DC at least. I called them yeasterday an they informed me
that it was cancelled well over a month ago -- just not updated on
that website. No plans for a DC gig there this year.
rgds.... john
A friend tells me that they're now playing at Manchester Uni. on
Weds 27 Nov - £13.50 or £15.25 on-line, which seems a bit
steep to me...
