I was on Darla.com (great site BTW) yesterday and they have this featured on the
front page. I
ordered it, and historically they don't put stuff up they don't have in
stock...is it out already?

If anyone in the states wants a copy of this, Darla is the place to get it. Good
prices and quick
shipping.

I've not heard anything about this being released already. I'll see if
I can contact Phil Cleaver and get a release date.

Cheers
Mike

If any UK citizens are looking for this interesting documentary by Carol Morley
(which
features Bruce and Vini), and you live near a branch of MVC, I recommend you go
and
have a look in their current sale. I've seen it in two separate branches for a
mere
£1.99, so there's a reasonable chance you may find one too...

Community-minded message ends.

Anyone read the blurb on darla?....

DURUTTI COLUMN, THE
Amigos Em Portugal
Kooky (UK)

Digitally re-mastered from vinyl, this is a limited re-release of the
hard to find import Amigos Em Portugal. `Amigos..' was released first
time around in 1983 is a pre-cursor to one of the great Durutti Column
albums Without Mercy although ironically it was supposed to be
something more along the lines of something shorter. Recorded over a
matter of only a couple of days – such is always the case with Vini
Reilly - the album allegedly was supposed to be a single or extended
play and Vini was just enjoying the tape time playing many of the
current work in progress pieces which later became part of the
classical experiment with Music degree students Without Mercy. The
newly-formed Portuguese label had the tapes and different a idea!
Having heard several versions of events it is safe to at least say it
was not quite as expected by either Factory or the band at the time.
Most of the tracks here have a beautiful fragility whether just solo
guitar instrumentals `Estoril a Noire' or piano pieces such as `Wheels
Turning' or the piano loop from Without Mercy `Favourite descending
intervals'. Yes... the times when Vini played piano... the years
before he believed he was `an awful and discombobulated pianist' in
his own words. It is the second release in a series of limited
re-issues from the band on the imprint durutticolumn.com, the first of
which Live At The Venue sold out on pre-sale. Three or four other
albums of rare or previously unreleased material are planned over the
next eighteen months. All will be 1000 copy only pressings.

Just received my copy from Darla, and the sound is excellent...light years ahead
of "Venue".
I'm no audiophile, but it sounds perfect to me. I'm playing it through a G5 iMac
, with a pair
of Harmon Kardon soundsticks and subwoofer (they hook through a USB port, and
are totally
digital), which are not forgiving at all. No cracks or pops at all. Excellent
job!

I got mine today, too, but I hear plenty of pops and crackles, especially on
the softer songs. Not much better than my homemade copy, but glad to support
Vini. The audiophiles will not be happy.

as someone who used to have access to a stereo costing tens of thousands, I can

Hi

Hate to upset the purists but as one who spent all his late teens and twenties
scouring record fairs for DC and stockholm monsters tape bootlegs...and putting
up with more snaps crackles and pops than a packet of rice crispies combined
with the sound of several people slurping coffee in the mix (listened to on an
amstrand).... aren't we somewhat missing the point.the quality of the music

I saw DC at Leeds a few months ago...the sound was very poor.the bands quality
of songwriting and musicianship shone through

Just thought a bit of contention and counter arguement might liven the debate

Depends I suppose - I'm not much of a one to bother about sound quality
overmuch, but particularly with vinyl noise pops and crackle can be very
intrusive. On the other hand, it's only the worst examples that affect
my enjoyment, and they're fairly easily cleaned up. (I'll confess to
having spent hours trying to remove barely audible clicks in the past).

I agree with Adam...it's absolutely about the music, and for all but a few the
sound is
completely listenable. I have plenty of bootlegs that sound far worse, but I
still listen to
them all the time and enjoy them greatly, regardless of a few glitches.

Thanks to all involved in getting this out...I am thoroughly enjoying it.

I still don't hear much in the way of "vinyl" noises though, and I have listened
to it loudly
on 3 different systems now.

Must be going deaf :-)

hello

its phil here from kooky - i am interested to read your comments
about the Amigos CD and concerns about remastering etc...

Well... I agree that Venue could have been better - i just could not
physically get a better 'source'

there were time constraints which were placed on us getting this
album out and we just could not get a better copy. Th remarks of
using more sophisticated equipment on venue are not relevant on two
counts - firstly it was 198? and well - it was v expensive then to do
such a thing and we must remember the gig was recorded unknown to the
band - really just a legal bootleg !!!!

thats another story though !!!!

With Amigos - it has been a much much better reproduction of the
vinyl original. In all... Keir did 4 takes and edited most noise out
bar-by-bar without taking too much of the original eq out of the
sound. As far as i am aware - no reverb type effect was added post-
pre production. We have 1000 CD's whcih we rejected and I am
currently getting rid of with household waste as they contained 11
tracks only and the quality was inferior - we were not happy with
either aspects obviously !

It does still have a little amount of surface noise which I am sure
will irk some people - well - me included to a degree - but well as i
have said before its like going to Venice and saying the canals smell
or that 'mona lisa' is a little old - listen to the music not the
ambient noise !!!! All said - money sadly also comes into the fray
and we have no limitless studio budget either.

I hope this gives some background information and you are all happy
with it if you choose to purchase it !!!

As for the 1000 useless CD's I am binning the lot and it is something
which not be available as an ebay rarity - like the readily
available 'faith' CD !!

Well... thats all for now - take care

Phil KOOKY

sound perspective of the original release. As far as I know, the
original release was recorded direct form the front of house mixing
desk? This is one to two cheap and cheerful ways of recording a live
concert. At almost no additional cost you have a recording of the the
performance. The down side is that little or no of room ambiance is
recorded. This is because of the close microphone techniques used in
a rock context. i.e. mics are placed only an inch or two away from
each sound source. So Keir was trying to reintroduce the room reverb.
(I don't think his choice of reverb parameters were very convincing.
The other problem was that the clicks on the LP were driving the
reverb harder, increasing it in level!)
>
> To record a concert correctly you need to hire a mobile recording
truck and two or more recording engineers. They will take separate
split feeds of each mic on stage, and also add two or more mics,
pointing out to the audience for crowd/room reverb. It's usually all
recorded to multi-track tape machine, and then remixed in a studio at
a later date.

well chaps i am well just surprised at peoples apparent lack of
honesty and hmmm well just read two emails - not made up i promise !!!

Hi Phil,

The CD arrived yesterday (not a bank holiday in Ireland). The music
on it is
wonderful, however I couldn't help noticing that there were
scratches,
fingermarks, even a black dot (that could not be cleaned out) on the
playing
surface of the CD. I take pride in the good condition of my CDs, and
considering that I paid the full price of a new CD, I would like to
have a
clean (and preferably unplayed) copy of the subscription CD. If you
have
more copies in stock, I propose to return the copy you sent me (to
the
address on the back of the envelope) in return for an unplayed one.
Let me
know.

Cheers,

George.

So... i replied :-

George - just keep it please ! im sorry if its caused you a
problem... i
can assure you it is unplayed but i do apologise...........

will send another one - please pass that copy on to a friend -
someone who
may enoy it

i take your word for the condition - so it will go out this week

best wishes

Phil kooky

Well... its not that bad a copy - as its just gone for £56.00.....
somehow i have decided not to send another one til that one comes
back now !!!

Phil
