Re: [Electone Talk] Re: Need info/help for sick FX-20

Yep, sounds like a different problem to mine.  The logic chips back then (six micron CMOS) had very definite life span issues due to migration of the metalization across the chip, so I suspect the days of all of our old organs are numbered, but long may they last.

This intermitant problem of yours could be a dry joint, or a bad connection in the interconnect cabling, but I suspect that you have already had a magnifying glass on the printed circuit board looking for bad joints.

Good luck anyway, and thanks for the lead on Nadeem.

Bill

Thanks for your comments Bill.  I'll try following up on the Canada link for parts.  The company that Yamaha sold their FX-20 parts to here in the U.S. is named "Nadeem Technical Services".  I don't know where they are located, but their phone number is 714-901-7222.  They seemed to be very helpful concerning my request for parts, but didn't have those parts in stock and couldn't get them.

All of my slider controls appear to be working.  They are moving most of the time.  The problem is in the serial data lines that sends setup data throughout the whole system on all of the settings.  Mine is locking up in the middle of an operation at random.  In some cases it shuts part of the system totally off.  The only action I can take is to power the organ off and back on.  It resets the system and things mostly work correctly until it acts up again....usually in a matter of minutes.  Very frustrating problem with not much consistency as to what will fault next when it happens.

Thanks for the info on the slider belts.  I'll keep that info on file.

I have a local Yamaha organ repairman looking for parts.  He has worked on my organ early on when I first bought it new, approximately 1986.  Since then it has worked fine until this problem.  He has lots of experience on the FX-20 an has some parts in stock hopefully yet.

I'll keep the group posted on my status of repair.

Gary A.

Try Yamaha Canada (yamaha.ca).  they had parts for my FS-500, same vintage.  Who was the other company, BTW, they may have some other bits of interest to the rest of us.

Mind you, if the sliders are not working properly, it is likely thet the belts are stretched, and/or the motor brushes are dirty.  I had to replace all of the belts, and disassemble and clean all of the motors on my FS-500.  do not assume because they are all faulty, it must be whatever drives them, all it needs is for someone to spray switch cleaner in the slider slots, and your belts will slip, and stretch.

Replacement belts can be found at cassete recorder spares stores.  you need belts 1.9 cm in diameter (they are about 1 mm square rubber).

Good luck,

Bill

FYI,
I appreciate the person sending me this information on troubleshooting the problem on my FX-20.  It appears I need both the YM21140 and YM21210 IC's.  After calling Yamaha here in the U.S. they said they no longer stock these items.  They sold their remaining inventory to another company a few years ago.  I called that company and they don't have the parts either.

I would like to talk to the person that sent me the email (tnmshd), but I cannot find an email address for you to send my response and questions to.

Does anyone in the Electone Talk group know where these parts can be found?  I would be interested in a working "SC" circuit board if that is available.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary A.

All of the voices work fine, but the sliders
> and setup buttons are not responding properly when activated.

1:Check SC Sheet IC1(SCI)YM21140
PinNo.51 SDO(Serial data out)
No.50SDi(serial data in) and Vss,Vdd,SysClock,Chip enable.
2:Panel Loop (serial data line)
SC sheet-DRE-PN3-PSB-PN1-PSW-RER1-UpperPanel-REL1-Solo-Upper-RER1-RPN-
RER1-Lower-REL1-Lower-PN4-DRE-SC
TC4050 buffer IC*5(REL1,RER1,DRE) and all DRV IC(YM2121) PinNo.1
(Serial data Out)No.3(in) and Vss VDD

> Yamaha still have any spare parts available for this model - 1985

They don't have a SC sheet But they have IC(YM21140,YM21210).
Ask YAMAHA and make confirm

Good Luck,,
