FYI,
This message is directed to Brian per his question concerning the disk drive unit for the FX-10.
The disk drive unit that was designed to work with the FX-10/20 model Yamaha organ was called the Music Disk Recorder MDR-1.
It normally sits on the upper right hand side of the organ top and is encased in a dark grey metal case.
It connects to the FX-10/20 via a 15 pin connector to an interface circuit board mounted on the back side of the card cage inside the organ.
The MDR-1 and interface circuit board plus cable came as a set. The disk drive required its own AC power cable.
As a whole, the MDR-1 worked well but the drawback to the unit was the diskettes that it used are not the standard 3 1/2 inch variety. They were somewhat smaller and if you can find any blank or prerecorded diskettes they would be of the Maxell CF-2 style. I don't know if any of those diskettes are available any longer except possibly on eBay.
The problem with the RP1 registration memory packs is the age of the battery inside the pack. Due to their age, the battery is near failure or has failed. The tend to destroy a transistor on a circuit board inside the organ when that happens. The battery can be replaced with one from several of the on-line electronic component supply houses.
The FX-10 is a great organ and the only one better in my opinion is the FX-20. Of course I might be a little biased since I own the FX-20 and have for over 20 years.
The FX-10/20 was never a MIDI organ but there are people that have designed and sell a MIDI interface unit using the disk drive interface circuit board.
Hope this info is of help to you Brian.
