It is most likely the internal hard drive. The drive I have makes a fair amount of noise as well. You could get an external enclosure for the drive and move it...

It is a standard 50 pin SCSI internal. One HDD i can recommend w EmaxII is the Quantum Maverrick 540. I have two of them installed internally in my EmaxII....
