I would LOVE to know how to get my paws on the Emax HD's or the Emax 2's that
Depeche used on the tours 88-93.
Could you imagine having Alan Wilder's Emaxes with the hard drives loaded with
Depeche Banks.
Just a dreaming session happening in my brain....
THey must still be around, I wonder who has them. I'm sure Alan didn't keep
them as he would move on as far as gear goes. I think he has an Emulator 3.
But those units must still exist somewhere.
I read about a guy who loaned his emax I to the dust brothers and they used it
to create Paul's Boutique, such an amazing album. He still has the emax, but
what a seminal album, and a sample based album that you could not make and
release today because of all the clearance issues you would hit! You'd have a
lawsuit for every dollar. Not to mention how brilliant the album is musically.
That's a HD I would love to sift through to hear how they did it.
Peace

not only that i wouldn't want the Emaxes which DM toured with as i'm sure
they were beat to hell by the end of their tour. ha, i doubt DM even wanted
them by then. but yeah, sure the samples are stored away somewhere safe.

I never knew why always sampler or keyboard users wants to imitate or use the
same samples or sound of celebs.
synths and samplers are great instruments, and everyone could create great
sounds, even pressing random buttons.
OK depeche mode sounds awesome, but that's all. don try to be depeche mode.
use your imagination please. same for the people who need X piece of gear that
john doe use in some tour.
music's first.
I don't know what all the aggro is on this thread.... I think it'd be
really cool to have an emax used by a musical hero.
I am very very lucky to have a TR727 that was owned by two musicians
that are special to me, and just having it around makes me happy. No it
does nothing that any other 727 can't do, and to be honest I don't even
really use 727 sounds, but I'll never sell it. Because they used it in
making one of the 5 most musically important albums to me, ever. Its not
about being a gear collector as such, or being a creepy stalker, but
about having a physical link to music that's important to me.
but yeah - back to the emax - the idea of having the actual sound banks
to play with would be even more fun. imagine listening to a live version
of one of your musical heroes tracks, then going throgh the sample bank
in the sampler and learning how they put together the banks for
performing that track... even sitting at home in your studio and jamming
along with the live recording. that would be really fun.
And seeing how very few people on this list are actual professional
day-in day-out musicians, our emaxes are mostly for hobby use or at best
semi-pro use.. and in that case, shouldn't it be about fun and having
things around you that you love, as much as anything else?
and now all this rambling has made my brain dredge up an old quote it
stored away.... I remember reading this quote in a magazine once, from
some famous guitarist (maybe neil young??) who was talking about how he
loves picking up and playing old guitars, because they've been used by
people to sing songs and express themselves, and the old instrument is
full of stories and emotion. I always liked that idea.

Say you did own an emax with famous presets...
even when you don't play the same riff. the sound may trigger something
subconsciously that reminds many people of the songs they loved in the past.
some may notice it some may not... they may not know why they like it so much :)
That would be cool if it happened naturally like if you inherited the instrument
or it was a gift to you from the famous owner or even if they sold it to you but
going to an auction just for that would be a bit nerdy / trying too hard for my
tatses lol.
not to be rude just joinin in the convo.

True, however even to own a machine used by one of those people would still be
rather fantastic.
Even if it was a backup unit that didn't get used much. They went somewhere,
and I'm gonna find one! If I do, then I need to get it autographed!

Wow TFF was another most inspiring group on musical and philosophical levels as
well. I enjoy the subject matter and some of their back story in regards to
primal scream therapy etc. Curt Smith was also a major influence on my bass
playing and Roland a song writing hero of mine. I like that they walked the
thin line between super stardom and not being recognized by the average
(American) person on the street. They maintained a sense of separation from the
'stars' of their time. Integrity holds through time.
Well I've got an Emax 2 that was used by Depeche. I know the
Emax's history, as it came directly from Mute.
It had a bit of a hard life, but has now been repaired, and is in
Full working order.
I've also got a Novation Drum Station from Mute's now closed
Studio, 'The Instrument'.
It was used by Depeche, as well as Fad Gadget, and several other
Mute artists.
I'm a big fan of Depeche Mode, and have been for many years.
I also managed to get hold of 2 large boxes of samples on floppy.
I have to admit that I have only had time to have a listen to 25%
Of the discs, but I have to say there are some very interesting sounds
On the discs I've loaded.
So, Depeche used instruments are still around. Several of which
Have ended up on eBay.
All the best

Hi Everyone.......
What's with the "so you're a collector?" And sounds a little "nerdy?"
Are we a group of kindred spirits here, or trying to do the superior dance.?
I loved the conversation about previous owners..............................
You never know who you're talking to on the web, right ?
Some people have the poetic grace to appreciate the history associated with an
instrument that has seen historic moments on stage. Others just wish they had.
Respect,
Dave

??? My keyboard was bought through e-bay, no history, but with a future I hope.
What is the issue with someone wanting a piece of history? Being an artist, I
would love to have a brush owned by Michelangelo. Does that mean I will be able
to copy his work? Absolutely not. Can I gain inspiration from the item? I think
so. Do I consider myself a collector? No. Would I like to have inspiration near
me? Yes.
Just because you admire someone does not mean you are imitating them.
Inspiration can come in many forms; love, admiration, even pure jealousy :), but
in the end you can learn from them and become what you are destined to be.

This is incorrect. Voice Farm opened for DM at the Cow Palace on the Tour for
the Masses (music for the masses tour) in San Francisco. Nitzer Ebb was suppose
to be the opening act for the whole tour but couldn't get into the US some Visa
issue. Nitzer did open up for DM on the Violator tour. For the Masses tour DM
used Emax HD and DX7II (martin and Alan) and a DW800(Fletch) but the non-emax
keyboards were only for triggering Emax HD rackmounts as a back-up. Alan
demonstrates the Emax HD in the documentary 101.

keyboards were only for triggering Emax HD rackmounts as a back-up. Alan
demonstrates the Emax HD in the documentary 101.

Back in the day, I mean way back before
craigslist and eBay, there was this local
news paper listing here in SF called the Adveriser
and I responded to this add for an Emulator 1. Ended up
belonging to some group called Voice Farm, I had never heard
of them before. The E1 came with a whole
box of their samples which I thought were sort
of lame at the time, but their where also a few factory
samples that sounded very familiar. Any way to make
a long story short, Voice Farm ended up opening
for Depeche Mode, it was supposed to be
Nitzer Ebb, not sure what happened. This was for the Violator
tour, I know DM was using Emax IIs and DX7s for a backups.
I always wondered if Voice Farm had gotten
the E1 or some of the disks from DM. The recoginzable
sounds all sounded like they where from Black Celebration.

synths and samplers are great instruments, and everyone could create great
sounds, even pressing random buttons.

I don't know why, but quite a few posters have
Got the wrong end of the stick.
Ok, some people would like to own kit which was
Previously owned by a celeb muso, or band.
I have several instruments in my collection that
have been used to create some of my fav tunes
What's the problem with that? I can't see one.
The sound designing issue is rightly the subject of a
different post, and so it should be.
If a person wants to emulate, (excuse the pun), their favorite band
solo artist, that's up to them I see no harm in it.
I write commercial music, and learnt my craft doing cover versions
of well known songs.
It taught me how to arrange songs, how to layer instruments,
and sounds, etc.
If you look on You Tube for example, you will see some very
well crafted cover versions, which were created as a tribute, rather
than an atempt by the musician to 'Be' the artist they are covering.

What is the issue with someone wanting a piece of history? Being an artist, I
would love to have a brush owned by Michelangelo. Does that mean I will be able
to copy his work? Absolutely not. Can I gain inspiration from the item? I think
so. Do I consider myself a collector? No. Would I like to have inspiration near
me? Yes.
Just because you admire someone does not mean you are imitating them.
Inspiration can come in many forms; love, admiration, even pure jealousy :), but
in the end you can learn from them and become what you are destined to be.

some may notice it some may not... they may not know why they like it so much :)

instrument or it was a gift to you from the famous owner or even if they sold it
to you but going to an auction just for that would be a bit nerdy / trying too

I have Alan Wilders Emulator II shell he played on the '84 Tour. (Just the shell
unfortunately...)
But nevertheless, it means a lot to me.
I'm also supposed to own Stevie Wonders Emulator I (it's got serial Number 001
B).
