"See I was -- born in sewage, born to make bomb music/
Flow tight like I was born Jewish/ Used the streets as
a conduit - I kept arms/ 38 longs inside my mom's
Buick/ At any given moment Shawn could lose it, be on
the news/ Iron cuffs - arms through it;"
Hot Club: Rap & Hip-Hop
Posted in the HOT WIRE on January 1st, 2001, the
lyrics from Jay-Z's "This Can't Be Life," set the tone
for a year in which some of the music industry's
hottest names would find themselves on the wrong side
of the law.
Here are some of Hip-Hop's high profile "black eyes"
from 2001.
The new millennium opened with Jigga, Sean
"Puffy-at-the-time" Combs and Jamal "Shyne" Barrow
facing felony assault charges. The trial of Bad Boy's
founder and young star would garner headlines with
Combs profiled on both Court TV and A&E's Biography.
In the end, his deep pockets beat the rap, while Shyne
-- currently serving a 10-year sentence -- would fail
to escape conviction.
Jay-Z's big money would save him from a possible 15
years in prison for stabbing Lance "Un" Rivera -- who
conveniently acquired amnesia after receiving a piece
of the Roc in the form of $600,000. After proclaiming
his innocence for several months, Jay-Z pleaded no
contest.
In late March, Juvenile got into the "swing" of things
by clobbering a Miami man over the head with a Moet
bottle and demanding that police officers take his
"mother f***in' a** to jail."
In April, the New York Police Department began
watching nightclubs frequented by celebrity musicians
and compiling a file on rappers and others in the
music industry with criminal histories.
Mid-July saw Beanie Sigel arrested and charged with
both aggravated and simple assault. Pickup truck
driver Frank Ferrer claimed Sigel and his Philly crew
kicked and punched him while he was down.
Detroit rapper Esham complained that Eminem and D12
were biting his style in late July, and was rewarded
with a savage beatdown by members of the D12's
entourage in August.
Corey Miller, better known as Master P's younger
brother C-Murder, turned himself into Baton Rouge, LA
police in mid-August after being sought by authorities
for allegedly shooting at two men outside a local
nightclub.
Last, but not least, October found
rapper/actor/pornographer Snoop Dogg charged with
marijuana possession after officers stopped two of his
tour buses for speeding and discovered several bags of
"sticky green."
