What an amazing talent!!!!!!!!!!
And judging by her pedal technique in the 1st piece, I know she must have been
classically trained!!!!!!!
Although, the heels are a bit too high......
She pays 2 pieces in this video!!!!

Enjoy!!!!!

Hi Rob,
I tried posting but I don't think it took.
I am the boy in the picture with Ethel that is posted on her memorial
web site. and for what it is worth, my vote is, "NO" the woman with
Frank Sinatra is NOT Ethel Smith.

My thoughts are this:
No way in Hell is that Ethel Smith with Frank
Sinatra! It is almost comical to think that this woman in the photo
even looks remotely like Ethel Smith. the hair do was common in those
days and that is where any resemblence between the to ends.

Hi there all you ES experts. Here's a good one. Someone has just listed an

Dear Listers
I have been told (by both the late Ashley Miller &
John Seng) that Ethel had a staff of arrangers to work
things up for her. Ashley himself did some of them,
and Milton Page was also credited, but they always
were sold under Miss Ethel's name.

I've often wondered about Ethel's published arrangements. Did she
actually write them or were they transcribed from her performances or
did someone arrange the numbers prior to Ethel's performance. Does
anyone know? Many thanks, and happy Thanksgiving to all Ethel fans,
and may she rest in peace.

Ethel was my idol even when I was in high school back in the 50s. Our family
had one of her albums that we finally played on a "stero' phonograph that was
newly invented. Back then, there were few PIPE organs around where I lived and
Hammond C3s were the church organs of choice before the Allens which was
supposed to "sound more like a pipe organ". Now I have a 1960 model in my home.
So nostalgic - the memories!
Elthel was the first organist I ever heard who played "pop" and "fast" music on
the organ...like Tico Tico!
Most of my exposure to organ music had been church hymns, etc.
She is an ICON for sure!

Ethel Smith had an amazing talent that will never be equaled! She could play
things in her huge heeled shoes most people couldn't do in their Organmasters.
(I don't think I could even WALK in some of the shoes she wore!!) She was a
talented entertainer by any measure. Ethel is one of the reasons I have a
Hammond.

I too have looked high and low for these mentions from Hammond Times.
I have found nothing. So, maybe someone in the group knows
something. While I'm posting, I am interested in ANY details of ANY
appearance any of the group members may have seen in person. Please
either respond as a post or to me directly Hammondrobb@...
I recently read in the Fall 1969 issue of The Hammond Times, in the
article "A Perfect Match... Ethel Smith and the Hammond," that Ethel
acted in a CBS-TV play called "Gilbert," "about a mother and her
young, disorganized son."
The article also mentioned a couple of commercials she'd done, one for
Ocean Spray Cranberry and another done with Soupy Sales and Gene Wood.
I've tried to find refernce to these appearances on the web, but have
met with no success. Does anyone have any knowledge of these later
performances they'd be willing to share?
Regards,
John

Thanks so much for these links. When she's playing Tico Tico it's
almost like the camera cannot keep up with her lightning fast fingers.
Some nice footwork from a modern player:

In my opinion she does more with ONE foot than most players can do with 2 (or 4)

Ethel Smith is the only pop organist I have ever seen use both feet
very efficiently and gracefully. At a concert she gave in Scranton
Pa , as she talked with the audience explaining the pedal board , she
demonstrated her technique by playing "The Darktown Strutter's Ball"
with a graceful command of pedal control with both feet equal to that
of Virgil Fox playing a Bach fugue. She was the best! and she always
played in heels when she was young, but chose a flatter heel to match
her wardrobe in her later performing years.
