A daring response to the taboo of women playing the djembe in West Africa, NIMBAYA! is the first all-women’s percussion and dance troupe from Guinea. The group, formerly known as Amazones Women Master Drummers of Guinea, was created in 1998 by Mamoudou Condé of Les Ballets Africains fame. The troupe is renowned internationally for its exhilarating drumming and high-energy dances -- both traditional and contemporary -- and exciting footwork. These concerts mark NIMBAYA!’s first New York appearances.

Before NIMBAYA! was formed, females in Guinea were not permitted to learn the art of djembe drumming. In 1998, with the support of the Department of Culture of Guinea, group founder Mamoudou Condé brought together 15 women from the four different regions of Guinea. Some of the women faced disownment from their families for pushing the boundaries of tradition, but after training for years to become master drummers, the women began to tour the world -- appearing in over 15 countries and at major festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz Festival and Montreal’s Festival International Nuits d’Afrique. The troupe first toured the US in 2004, and returned in the 2006-7 season.

The troupe’s name originates from the Nimba mask, which holds great significance in West African culture. Representing a woman at her zenith of power and beauty, the mask embodies the mother of fertility, the joy of living, and the promise of abundant harvest. The troupe pays tribute to women by choosing Nimba as a namesake and symbol of feminine beauty, strength, fertile abundance and integrity.

The group’s family show, with its combination of exuberant drumming and dance, exposes children to the beauty of African arts and provides a perfect opportunity to introduce children to the joy of live world music and dance. The show has been a major draw at international festivals, including the renowned children’s festivals in Seattle and Edmonton, Canada.

NIMBAYA! dedicates its evening performances to women of all ages, cultures, social and economic status, religion, color and ethnic background, aiming to empower women to take control of their lives. In these performances, in addition to the troupe’s acclaimed repertoire, NIMBAYA! premieres a new work to raise awareness about female genital mutilation (FGM) -- a practice that is deeply rooted in the traditions of a number of societies worldwide. Speaking out through their music, storytelling and choreography, the members of NIMBAYA! hope to eradicate FGM.

In addition to the Symphony Space concerts, NIMBAYA! will be part of an NYU symposium on female genital mutilation on Sunday, March 25, 1:30-3pm at the new Global Center for Academic & Spiritual Life, 238 Thompson Street at Washington Square South. The program, open to the public, will include a panel discussion with members of NIMBAYA! and NYU faculty. Free admission.

The event is co-sponsored with the Center for Multicultural Education & Programs and the Women’s Herstory Month.

RootsWorld Radio

I wanted to let you know about a new program I am producing for FM radio and
online.

We debuted in March on WAMU's sister station, "Bluegrass County" (my show being
a jarring exception to the logo). And premiering on the great online station
taintradio on Wednesday.

On program #4 we'll dig into the diatonic accordions of Europe, some Brazilian
tinged gospel, harmonica from Madagascar, piano from Burma and much more.
Artists include Accordion Samurai, Tref, Jean Čmilien, Matuto, Fiolministeriet,
Annbjřrg Lien & Bjřrn Ole Rasch, Sam Mangwana & Dino Vangu, Salif Keita, U Ohn
Lwin, and U Yee New.

Program #5 will feature the global-Indo-flamenco-jazz (too many hyphens?) of
Sacha Silva, with a song from a live concert and one from their latest
recording. We'll also hear an accordion quartet from Portugal, some Indian
influenced dub from Switzerland, Greek music from Czech Republic, a brilliant
guitar and vocal piece by English guitarist Nic Jones, some rock and roll
bagpipes from Turkey and much more. Artists featured on the show: The
Touré-Raichel Collective, Hank Jones, Cheikh Tidiane Seck and the Mandinkas, The
Peeni Waali All-Stars, Nic Jones, Sacha Silva, Nisos, QQQ, Danças Ocultas, and
Yarinistan with Oysterband.

Maria Kalaniemi and Timo Alakotila - Ĺkerö
The Finnish accordionist and pianist join together again on a series of original
compositions, in duets and occassional guest artists. They are unmatched for
their musicianship and compositional prowess.

Mariem Hassan - El Aaiun Egdat
In 2012 Mariem Hassan gives her music a new twist. The "Arab Spring" and the
indomitable Sahrawi struggle for independence are the subjects of her new songs.
Rooted in the traditions of the Haul, Hassan explores blues, jazz and
contemporay sounds as no other Sahrawi musician ever has. El Aaiún Egdat (El
Aaiún on Fire) embodies her fresh stylistic exploration. The Sahrawi diva is
accompanied once again by Vadiya Mint El Hanevi, on tebals (drums) and choruses,
by Luis Giménez on electric guitar, mbira and harmonica, by Hugo Westerdahl on
bass, and Gabriel Flores on saxophone and flutes.

Arto Jarvela - On the Coast (Arto Plays the fiddle, Vol. 3)
The thrid in Arto Järvelä's series of fiddle solo recordings tracing the history
of the music in Finland. 19 more tunes by the master musician. Notes in English
as well as Finnish.

Flukt - Stille for stormen
The Norwegian trio on fiddle, accordion and percussion; Sturla Eide, Řivind
Farmen and Hĺvard Sterten; take us on a global flight of fancy and folk on 'Calm
Before the Storm.' As with previous recordings (all of them hits here at
cdRoots), they have energy and surprises to spare. Highly recommended.

Abdulrahman Surizehi - Love Songs and Trance Music from Balochistan (2CD)
2 CD set in a book format featuring the Norwegian based Iranian musician Abdul
Rahman Surizehi, considered one of the world's finest benju players. The music
is from the Rakhshani area – a border region including parts of Iran, Pakistan,
and southern Afghanistan. In exile Abdul Rahman and his fellow musicians strive
to keep alive the ancient culture of Balochistan, which is under threat –

Hekla Stalstrenga - Makrame
Hekla Stĺlstrenga is an ensemble that reinvents the folk music of northern
Norway into something new, with a contemporary energy that never loses sight of
its roots. Makramé is their 2011 release. The musicians are Ragnhild Furebotten
(fiddle), Tore Bruvoll (guitar), Anne Nymo Trulsen (vocals), Ole-Jakob Larsen
(drums), Trond-Viggo Solĺs (bass) and Eivind Steinholm (audio engineer).

Sven Nyhus Kvartett - Bergrosa: 40 ar med… (CD and DVD set
40 years with the legendary professor of folk music, fiddler and "Commander of
the Order of St Olav," Sven Nyhus. The DVD is a collection of 30 tunes, 90
minutes of music culled 4 decades of the archives of Norwegian national
Broadcasting. The CD is a recording og a mid-summer concert and dance in the
town hall of Sollia, Norway.

Osvaldo Hernandez Napoles - Tierra
Osvaldo Hernandez Napoles is a Mexican musician who has lived in Belgium for
more than 20 years. After playing and recording with different multicultural
groups in a number of countries, Osvaldo composed original works for this first
album, on the theme of the Earth living on borrowed time. The different pieces
in which poetry intertwines with melodies are served by a range of instruments
from diverse indigenous and Afro-Latin American traditions, blended with
Arabo-Andalucian and Armenian tones. Osvaldo is accompanied by three musicians
from very different backgrounds: Patricia Van Cauwenberge (Belgian) on different
percussion instruments, including the Argentinean bombo, the Peruvian cajón, the
Brazilian pandeiro, Venezuelan maracas, and so on. Karim Baggili
(Jordanian-Serbo-Croatian-Belgian) on the Arab oud, the acoustic guitar and
vocals. Vardan Hovanissian (Armenian) on the doudouk and different Armenian
flutes.

Gansan - Elegie Berbere
Elégie berbčre is a unique collaboration of Belgian and Moroccan musicians, born
out of the love of an instrument - the ribab - and the sound of the Berber music
of South Morocco. This is a marriage between ribab and violin of Bouhssine
Foulane and the soprano saxophone of Ludovic Jeanmart, joined by a fine ensemble
of guitar, bass, percussion and drums.

Maarten Decombel - October Sunrise

Regarded as Italy's leading and longest-standing traditional music ensemble,
they come from the Salento, the heel of the Italian boot, in Puglia. The seven
piece band and dancer are the leading a new wave of young performers that are
re-inventing southern Italy's pizzica traditions for a modern audience, not by
fusing it into a familiar dance beat, but by makig the old rhythms and melodies
explode with contemporary energy for a new audience.
In an interview in RootsWorld, band leader Mauro Durante says of the music:
"Pizzica can transcend linguistic and temporal borders. I hope that through the
immediateness of pizzica, people can get closer to our whole culture, and
discover the other treasures, like the places, the history, the food and the
other beautiful traditions."

RootsWorld, the online music magazine founded in 1993, is seeking a few new
