“Play(s) with a fury, pounding out heart-racing rhythms and dancing into near frenzies.” -- Boston Globe

“Women play the djembe drums and dance with such intense energy that headbands and ankle-beads fly off their bodies…vigorous…forceful…a musical phenomenon.” -- Edge, Boston

A daring response to the taboo of women playing the djembe in West Africa, NIMBAYA! is the first all-women’s percussion and dance troupe from Guinea. The group, formerly known as Amazones Women Master Drummers of Guinea, was created in 1998 by Mamoudou Condé of Les Ballets Africains fame. The troupe is renowned internationally for its exhilarating drumming and high-energy dances -- both traditional and contemporary -- and exciting footwork. These concerts mark NIMBAYA!’s first New York appearances.

Before NIMBAYA! was formed, females in Guinea were not permitted to learn the art of djembe drumming. In 1998, with the support of the Department of Culture of Guinea, group founder Mamoudou Condé brought together 15 women from the four different regions of Guinea. Some of the women faced disownment from their families for pushing the boundaries of tradition, but after training for years to become master drummers, the women began to tour the world -- appearing in over 15 countries and at major festivals, including the New Orleans Jazz Festival and Montreal’s Festival International Nuits d’Afrique. The troupe first toured the US in 2004, and returned in the 2006-7 season.

The troupe’s name originates from the Nimba mask, which holds great significance in West African culture. Representing a woman at her zenith of power and beauty, the mask embodies the mother of fertility, the joy of living, and the promise of abundant harvest. The troupe pays tribute to women by choosing Nimba as a namesake and symbol of feminine beauty, strength, fertile abundance and integrity.

The group’s family show, with its combination of exuberant drumming and dance, exposes children to the beauty of African arts and provides a perfect opportunity to introduce children to the joy of live world music and dance. The show has been a major draw at international festivals, including the renowned children’s festivals in Seattle and Edmonton, Canada.

NIMBAYA! dedicates its evening performances to women of all ages, cultures, social and economic status, religion, color and ethnic background, aiming to empower women to take control of their lives. In these performances, in addition to the troupe’s acclaimed repertoire, NIMBAYA! premieres a new work to raise awareness about female genital mutilation (FGM) -- a practice that is deeply rooted in the traditions of a number of societies worldwide. Speaking out through their music, storytelling and choreography, the members of NIMBAYA! hope to eradicate FGM.

In addition to the Symphony Space concerts, NIMBAYA! will be part of an NYU symposium on female genital mutilation on Sunday, March 25, 1:30-3pm at the new Global Center for Academic & Spiritual Life, 238 Thompson Street at Washington Square South. The program, open to the public, will include a panel discussion with members of NIMBAYA! and NYU faculty. Free admission.

The event is co-sponsored with the Center for Multicultural Education & Programs and the Women’s Herstory Month.

For further information about NIMBAYA!, visit http://www.amazoneswomandrummers.com/

For recent publicity in the Boston Globe, please visit:

http://www.boston.com/ae/music/articles/2012/02/10/all_female_dance_troupe_nimbaya_beats_the_odds___and_the_drums/

These concerts are made possible in part with public support provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency, and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Sacha Silva, with a song from a live concert and one from their latest
recording. We'll also hear an accordion quartet from Portugal, some Indian
influenced dub from Switzerland, Greek music from Czech Republic, a brilliant
guitar and vocal piece by English guitarist Nic Jones, some rock and roll
bagpipes from Turkey and much more. Artists featured on the show: The
Touré-Raichel Collective, Hank Jones, Cheikh Tidiane Seck and the Mandinkas, The
Peeni Waali All-Stars, Nic Jones, Sacha Silva, Nisos, QQQ, Danças Ocultas, and

touch.

Thanks for your time,

Cliff Furnald

The ThrowDown Band exploded onto the Boston music scene in late 2009, and in a short time they attained the reputation of a band to be reckoned with in the New Blues Era; they are widely regarded as the next big act to come out of Boston.

ThrowDown’s first release, “Let Sleeping Dogs Lie”, was selected as the "Best Self-produced CD" by the Boston Blues Society, and has been submitted to the IBC for inclusion in the 2012 International Blues Competition in Memphis, TN.

An aggressive, take no prisoners, guitar-shredding, soul-screaming approach to music puts them in a hard-to-define, multi-genre, rock, electric-blues, rock category.  And one thing is for sure: they do not disappoint.  From excruciatingly soulful slow jams to hard-hitting, genre-bending rockers, a night with The ThrowDown Band is full of peaks and valleys building to a crescendo that will slam you into a climactic explosion; leaving you dripping with sweat and begging for more.

Davi Santos is an Acoustic Rock, Singer, Songwriter, Guitarist and
Keyboard player who moved from his home in Brazil to Florida in 2001.
For the next seven years he played music in Naples, Fort Myers and
Southwest Florida. In 2008 he packed up his bags and instruments,
heading north to Virginia where he played in various venues for the
next two years. Being restless for new adventures and more experiences
he departed for New England in 2010. Since then he has been performing
in venues around Massachusetts and New Hampshire including,
The Dugout Cafe (Boston), 6B Lounge (Boston), The Lizard Lounge
(Cambridge), The Cantab Lounge (Cambridge), Tommy Doyles's
(Cambridge), Independence Bar & Grill (Chelmsford), Brother's Sports Bar
(Dracut), The Chit Chat Lounge (Haverhill), Cafe Verde (Lawrence),
Studio 99 (Nashua), The Round Room Coffee House (Mount Vernon),
Tupelo Music Hall (Londonderry), and many more...

Davi Santos began developing his finger-picking guitar style after seeing
James Taylor.  He fell in love with the way James performs, especially his
songwriting and lyrics. Davi says, the message of a song means a lot to
him, he pays very close attention to it, that's why he became a songwriter,
because he feels music delivers messages in a way that no other vehicle
can.  John Mayer is another influence who blew Davi away with his musicality
and deep meanings in songs like... "In Repair" and "Stop This Train".
Jason Mraz’s performances are an inspiration in the way he brings so much
life into every song he plays. The Dave Matthews Band with their grooves
makes Davi want to get up and dance to their syncopated beats. These are
just a few of the artists that inspire Davi Santos.  He blends them all together
to create his own unique sound and delivers them with foot moving energy
to his ever growing audience.

from diverse indigenous and Afro-Latin American traditions, blended with
Arabo-Andalucian and Armenian tones. Osvaldo is accompanied by three musicians
from very different backgrounds: Patricia Van Cauwenberge (Belgian) on different
percussion instruments, including the Argentinean bombo, the Peruvian cajón, the

out of the love of an instrument - the ribab - and the sound of the Berber music

fusing it into a familiar dance beat, but by makig the old rhythms and melodies
explode with contemporary energy for a new audience.
In an interview in RootsWorld, band leader Mauro Durante says of the music:
"Pizzica can transcend linguistic and temporal borders. I hope that through the
immediateness of pizzica, people can get closer to our whole culture, and
discover the other treasures, like the places, the history, the food and the
other beautiful traditions."

SPECIAL, PERSONAL, IN HOUSE SALE CONTINUES
I am in the process of moving my office to smaller spaces, and one of the
primary impediments to this is my personal collection of a few thousand CDs and
LPs. So, if you want to come to New Haven, CT at some point to dig through these
recordings and take some home at very reasonable prices (mostly 3.00 to 5.00
dollars), drop me an e-mail with a phone number and we can make arrangements.
This is BY APPOINTMENT only. No drop-ins. This is a small, private space that
cannot accommodate a lot of people so an appointment is necessary.

If you can't come to New Haven but want to discuss getting a flat-rate 'grab
bag' of CDs from a particular genre or region, drop me a note and we'll see what
we can do.

Thanks

Cliff Furnald

MUST BE WEARING BLUE TO GET IN!

Dear friends and colleagues,

We've just launched the first part of issue 10 of “Land of winds”, the digital magazine on Andean music and culture (http://landofwinds.blogspot.com/). This issue is devoted to the music and culture of Mapuche communities of Chile and Argentina.
Besides, we have a special Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Tierra-de-vientos/136261716401413.
As usual, comments and spread will be more than welcome.

cdRoots 50% off Sale
www.cdroots.com

cdRoots limited label sale - 50% off on a select group of CDs from some great
labels. Music from all over the world.
http://www.cdroots.com/hmsale.shtml

In an effort to down-size the inventory and concentrate on harder to find
recordings from around the world, I am going to delete a large number of CD
titles from the catalog this month.

So these labels will be sold off at 50% of their retail price.
(That's as little as $8.00 per disc)
Harmonia Mundi
Piranha
Ocora
Institut du Monde Arabe
Silex
Chant du Monde
Network Medien
Ota
Dorian
World Village
East Meets West
Asphalt Tango
Daqui
Long Distance
and others

Use this link for the whole list
http://www.cdroots.com/hmsale.shtml

Please read this if you decide to buy.
It's not Amazon and it requires a bit of "home made" patience!

Put them in your shopping cart and place your order. They will still show the
full price when you check out. You will not make a payment at that time.

I will deduct the 50% before I send you the final invoice for payment.

Special order items cannot be discounted.
In stock items only. When they are gone, they're gone!
Only those items in your cart that start with the code "hm-" will be discounted.

Overseas buyers:
I may take these out of plastic jewel boxes for shipping, but you will get the
entire package (CD, booklet, inserts) if I do.
Digipacks or any other unusual special packaging will, of course, be shipped as
is.

Sorry to do this in a complicated fashion, but it is the only way I can offer
you this special price on these fine CDs.
Your patience will be rewarded!

If you have questions, concerns or problems, do not hesitate to contact me
directly for help.

RootsWorld, the online music magazine founded in 1993, is seeking a few new
(volunteer!) writers.

We're not looking for academic writers, but rather knowledgeable writers who can
get the word out to a general readership. That of course does not rule out the
academics among us, but you'll need a little populist style!

RootsWorld is not a blog, not a fanzine. We go into detail, we're judicious
about what we publish and we love good writing as much as good music.

We are always looking for reviews, interviews and articles about all aspects of
the world's music. If you want to consider joining us, take a look and then drop
me a note.
