Hi folks,
I hope you're doing well. I've now been back in Brisbane for a few weeks, having completed a successful 10 week tour of Japan. As well as wanting to tell you about my adventures in Japan, I have a special announcement.
CD Release: Tibet2Timbuk2 "Music is Life"
My world music group Tibet2Timbuk2, with Tibetan singer Tenzin Choegyal, singer-guitarist Marcello Milani and myself on tabla, have finally released our new CD "Music is Life". Here's the blurb:
It's a really good album and I'm so happy to be involved with it. Good time to buy Christmas presents?
You can listen to samples, download tracks or order the CD at the EthnoSuperLounge Shop. Proceeds go to support Tibetan Children's Village.
Japan Tour
I had a wonderful time in Japan, lugging my tabla and backpack around the country, living as a free spirit, with nothing more than what I can carry, playing beautiful music with beautiful people in beautiful places, and taking lots of breaks for natural hot spring baths! In total I stayed in 19 places, performed at 25 events with 21 musicians, and jammed with another dozen, altogether accompanying 14 different instruments, in 12 prefectures from Niigata to Kyushu, in only 10 weeks!
You can read all about the different episodes, from the beautiful Ei-Un-In Temple in Kyoto to the deluxe Cleo Osaka Nishi with American healing singer Gina Sala on my blog - there's a list of individual blog posts below but if you have time please go to the main page and skim through the lot. There are plenty of photos and not too much text.
The absolute highlight of the trip was the 11th annual Sangeet Mela in Horado village, Gifu. Santoor player Jimi Miyashita has been organising this all-night Indian classical music and dance event since 1998 and I think most people agree that this year's was the best ever! It brings together musicians, dancers and all levels of students of ICM from all around Japan and the community atmosphere is inspirational. This is a big part of why Indian music is so strong in Japan. I hope one day we can have a similar event in Australia. As well as photos and a report of the event, I also posted some videos on Youtube. Please take a look.
COMING UP:
We recently had the CD Launch of Tibet2Timbuk2's "Music is Life" CD at the Brisbane Powerhouse - a beautiful concert but I don't have photos yet. So please watch this space for news of that.
I don't have any concerts lined up in the near future, so for the time being I'm enjoying teaching my tabla kids' classes, and also have a lot of work to do promoting our new CD through various online channels. From December 17 til January 3 I'll be over in Perth with my family for a long-overdue Christmas reunion. I plan to visit India from early February to late March 2009, and after that should be settled in Brisbane for a little while. Possible Japan tour Sep-Oct 2009?

Rollicking Tibetan folk, afro-reggae guitar grooves and intricate
Indian tabla sound as if they were made for each other! Together,
Tenzin Choegyal, Marcello Milani and Shen Flindell create a new joyful
sound that transcends cultural boundaries.
Tibet2Timbuk2 has an eclectic repertoire resulting in an overall sound which is full and organic. All three musicians share melody, harmony, bass and percussion roles to create a solid yet easy groove.
