Actually, I could play the way you describe. However I actually pluck
perpendicular to the fingerboard. I believe this is how Scott LaFaro used to
play if memory serves me.
I don't own an acoustic bass, and don't know what the proper position is
for that instrument.

Hi.
In other words, you're now placing your body at right angle with the
bass, but you didn't change your plucking technique?
I pluck with the side of the first finger, and the bass is placed
about the same way I was holding an acoustic.
I get a very meaty sound, no unwanted tones, and a "normal" placement
of the instrument.
