THE PROFOUND SOUND TRIO, comprising as co-leaders ANDREW CYRILLE (drums), PAUL
DUNMALL (tenor saxophone, bagpipes), and HENRY GRIMES (acoustic bass, violin),
was heard for the first time at the Vision Festival in New York City on
Saturday, June 14th, 'O8, and the recording "Opus de Life" on the Porter Records
label (#PRCD-4O32) is living proof of that explosive celebration. Henry Grimes
and Andrew Cyrille have performed together at many festivals and venues
worldwide over the course of many years, to great acclaim; they are inspirations
to musicians everywhere and remain at the forefront of the creative music world,
as they continue to carry the torch for innovation and free expression. In 2OO6
Henry Grimes traveled to England, where he collaborated with the superb British
multi-reedist Paul Dunmall, an artist totally devoted to the ideals of
improvised music, indeed a kindred spirit. Those concerts combined to create
the Profound Sound Trio, three equal partners in total improvisation, informed
by history and mystery, truly a meeting of hearts, minds, and souls.
ANDREW CYRILLE was born in Brooklyn, lives in New Jersey, and attended the
Juilliard and Hartnett Schools of Music, as well as studying privately. In a
stellar lifetime in the music, he has performed with a wide range of jazz
artists, including Muhal Richard Abrams, John Carter, Kenny Dorham, Coleman
Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, David Murray, Horace Tapscott, Mal Waldron, and Mary
Lou Williams. In 1964 he formed an association with pianist Cecil Taylor that
would last for 11 years. Starting in the late '6O's, Andrew organized several
percussion groups, including Dialogue of the Drums, Pieces of Time, and Weights
and Measures; some of the distinguished players in these groups were Obo Addy,
Michael Carvin, Kenny Clark, Milford Graves, and Famoudou Don Moye. His
sterling work has earned him a number of grants and awards from the National
Endowment for the Arts and Meet the Composer, and in 1999, he received a
Guggenheim Fellowship for composition. From 1988 through the present time, he
has toured and performed here and abroad with renowned Russian percussionist
Vladimir Tarasov. In 1975, Cyrille formed a band called Maono (Feelings)
featuring various instrumental voices determined by his compositions. He is a
member of Trio 3 with Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman; Andrew also leads Haitian
Fascination, playing music inspired by Haitian traditions, and has been
collaborating recently with musicians such as Karl Berger, Dave Burrell, Dave
Douglas, Henry Grimes, William Parker, Roswell Rudd, and Archie Shepp. He can
be heard on more than 75 recordings on many labels, including Black Saint, Blue
Note, HatHut, Intakt, Palmetto, Prestige, Silkheart, Soul Note, and
Steeplechase. Andrew is currently a faculty member at the New School University
in New York City. http://www.geocities.com/bourbonstreet/9273.
For over 3O years, British saxophonist and bagpiper PAUL DUNMALL has carved out
a global reputation for himself and is now widely recognized as one of the most
uncompromising and talented reed players in the international jazz /
improvised-music world. After turning professional at 17 and touring Europe
with the progressive rock group Marsupilami, he moved to America, playing with
many musicians, including Alice Coltrane, and touring with Johnny "Guitar"
Watson. In 1979 he was a founder of the jazz group Spirit Level with pianist
Tim Richards, while playing improvised music with the Nigel Morris trio. In
1985, the group Tenor Tonic was formed with Alan Skidmore, Tony Levin and Paul
Rogers. In 1987 Paul Dunmall joined the London Jazz Composers Orchestra led by
Barry Guy and joined Danny Thompson's folk-jazz hybrid Whatever. The following
year, the collective quartet Mujician was formed with Keith Tippett, Tony Levin,
Paul Dunmall, and Paul Rogers. Since 2OOO, Mr. Dunmall has been playing in
composer's Brian Irvine's 14-piece band, and he also set up his own
improvised-music record label with Philip Gibbs, called DUNS Limited Edition,
bringing musicians from many different traditions together to improvise. His
octet and Moksha big band showcase his abilities both as a composer drenched in
the jazz tradition and as a sympathetic leader able to give maximum freedom to
an elite group of fellow improvisers. His music can be heard on more than 13O
recordings on Antilles, Cadence, Cuneiform, DUNS, Emanem, HatArt, Intakt,
Spotlite, and more. Mr. Dunmall lives near Birmingham, U.K.

Master jazz musician and poet HENRY GRIMES has played more than 35O concerts in
23 countries (including many international festivals) since May of 'O3, when he
made his astonishing return to the music world after 35 years away. He was born
and raised in Philadelphia and attended the Mastbaum School and Juilliard. In
the '5O's and '6O's, he played and recorded with Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Benny
Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry
Mulligan, Sunny Murray, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil
Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and many more. But a trip to the West Coast to work with
Al Jarreau and Jon Hendricks went awry, leaving Henry at the end of the '6O's
with a broken bass he couldn't pay to repair, so he sold it for a small sum and
faded away from the music world. Many years passed, as he lived in his tiny
rented room in an S.R.O. hotel in downtown Los Angeles, working as a manual
laborer, custodian, and maintenance man, and writing many volumes of handwritten
poetry. Discovered there by a Georgia social worker and fan in 2OO2, Henry
Grimes was given a bass by William Parker, and after only a few weeks of
ferocious woodshedding, Henry emerged from his room to begin playing concerts
again, and made a triumphant return to New York City in May, 'O3 in the Vision
Festival. Since then, often working as a leader, he has played / toured /
recorded with Rashied Ali, Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson, Marilyn Crispell,
Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Paul Dunmall, Edward "Kidd" Jordan, David Murray,
William Parker, Marc Ribot, Cecil Taylor, and more. Henry has held residencies
at Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, the University of
Michigan at Ann Arbor, the University of Gloucester at Cheltenham, and more. He
made his professional debut on a second instrument (the violin) at the age of
7O, has published the first volume of his poetry, "Signs Along the Road," and
has been creating illustrations to accompany his new recordings and
publications. Mr. Grimes can be heard on 85 recordings on various labels.

BIG CHEERS FROM THE PRESS !
Having shared recent dates in England with lost but now found bassist Henry
Grimes, British saxophone colossus Paul Dunmall returned the compliment here,
with masterful drummer Andrew Cyrille, in one of the Vision Festival's
highlights. Over the years Dunmall has forged and tested his muscular playing
in almost every conceivable situation, such that he dealt authoritatively with
whatever he faced, evidenced by one dazzling passage which saw Grimes' abstract
violin playing instantly echoed back at him by Dunmall's tenor. As a trio they
were incredibly responsive, and their attention to detail ensured that their
free-form outing took on the structural coherence that sets the great apart from
the merely good. -- John Sharpe, "All About Jazz," 'O8.
http://www.allaboutjazz.com/newyork/aaj_ny_200808.pdf.
This music not only has the elemental sound of human beings, the blood pumping,
the synapses snapping, but it has that astronomical scope too, the crackle,
shudder of space. All three make sounds that contain multiple layers of timbre,
tone and overtone, which on the surface might sometimes feel like chaos, but if
it is chaos, it contains all manner of truths and beauties. -- Peter Bacon,

und-trio
What's free jazz? At its worst, it produces gut-wrenching noise, at its rare
best, massively memorable music, advancing improvisational and rhythmic skills
to new heights. And the Profound Sound Trio is the best, with U.S. originators
bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Andrew Cyrille, and younger -- but still a free
veteran -- U.K. saxist Paul Dunmall. Grimes kicked off with an intriguing
extended solo bowing. Dunmall developed a classic blues phrase into something
phenomenal. Cyrille watched silently, like an extinct volcano, but then erupted
into a silver shimmer of cymbals and driving drum lines. Forget about tunes:
The trio in full flight was awesome, pure telepathic improvisation. Free jazz
is back. -- Derek Briggs, Cheltenham Jazz Festival,

io-town-hall/music.
Henry Grimes and drummer Andrew Cyrille bring their legendary wares to the
proverbial table, in concert with powerhouse tenor saxophonist Paul Dunmall.
Sparks were flying during the concert amid Dunmall's colossal sound and
pressure-cooker-like element, where the trio tackles the free zone with a
vengeance. Grimes' authoritative single-note lines and Cyrille's inventive
polyrhythmic fury offer Dunmall an unrestricted yet fertile launching pad,
contrasted by the artists' open-ended dialogues. The tenor saxophonist sojourns
into tension-and-release statements while injecting melodic hooks into the grand
scheme of matters. It's improvisation that makes near-perfect sense, an element
that should come as no surprise, given the respective musicians' credentials and
enviable feats within these expansive frameworks. The trio stimulates your
neural network with a myriad of highs, lows, and climactic opuses. Cyrille's
whirlwind-style undercurrents help generate a vast plane along with Grimes'
buoyant phrasings in concert with Dunmall's plaintive cries . -- Glenn Astarita,
http://tinyurl.com/ndx8km.
... Something happened on this stifling hot night at last year's Vision Festival
that lifted all three of these men at the same time to the peak of their
capabilities. This hour's worth of music simply overflows with life and passion,
bursts explosively open into one sonically amazing area after another, but never
loses its focus along its twisting pathways. In its effortless grace,
musicality, wit, boundless ideas, and swing, Cyrille's performance is
extraordinary in every way. His snare and bass drum manage to sound like both a
talking drum and Kenny Clarke; his conversational approach to rhythms (swinging
but not necessarily anchored to a stated beat) and nuanced cymbal work are
always perfectly attuned to what's going on in the music. Grimes sounds totally
alert and engaged on both bass and violin. He plucks out his lowest notes to
form a troubled bed for the music, with an urgency that keeps the music moving
without pushing it aggressively. His bowed work is celestial, yearning,
beautiful, and also fueled by a forward momentum that keeps Cyrille and Dunmall
at a boil. This is one of his best post-comeback recordings. And Dunmall is a
tenor gladiator, strong, cathartic, and detailed in his improvising. He spirals
upward into his altissimo register in response to Grimes' violin and lodges
himself deep in Cyrille's rhythmic abstractions. It's a performance in which
they just keep challenging one another, and the challenge is met every time. --
Ed Hazell, "Signal to Noise" Magazine, Fall, 'O9, issue #55.

Hans Koch (CH) / Damon Smith / Kjell Nordeson

Near 19th Street BART Oakland $6-10
Set 1: Tim Perkis / Scott R. Looney duo
Set 2:
Hans Koch (CH) - reeds
Damon Smith - double bass
Kjell Nordeson (SE) - percussion
Set 3: Quintet
Hans Koch:
1948, Biel, Switzerland; bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, soprano
saxophone, tenor saxophone, electronics.
Having studied at the Conservatory in Biel and Zurich, Hans Koch
began his musical career as a classical clarinetist, working from
1973 to 1980 at the Music College of Winterthur. In 1978, he met
Martin Schütz, also at the Conservatory, and they formed a jazz trio
at the beginning of the 1980s, finally settling with the drummer
Marco Käppeli. Performances eventually led to a recording of the trio
on ECM and then a second disc the following year (1988) on Sound
Aspects. In 1985 he won the best soloist award at the Jazzfestival
Lugano and in 1986 was awarded the "Kulturpreis from the city of Biel".
During the same period, Koch was also a member of Werner Lüdi's
Sunnymoon, along with Martin Schütz, Stephan Wittwer and Paul Lovens.
In 1987 he undertook a 6-month residence in New York and played in a
wide variety of situations: with Andrew Cyrille, Butch Morris,
Shelley Hirsch and David Moss & many others. This resulted in regular
performances at Willisau and Nickelsdorf and a recording for FMP of X-
Communication (Morris, Hirsch, Schütz, Lovens, Hans Reichel, Jason
Hwang and J.A. Dean). In 1988, Koch was a member of the Cecil Taylor
European Orchestra, the recording of which was released in the much-
prized In Berlin box set from FMP, as well as the ground breaking all
reed trio Holz Fur Europa with Wolfgang Fuchs and Peter Van Bergan
Hans Koch's solo CD, Uluru was recorded in 1989 and at the end of
1991 CHOCKSHUT (a near anagram of Koch and Schütz) was recorded, a
sextet that included Fredy Studer. This was the beginning of the trio
"Koch-Schütz-Studer", though their first recording with the
descriptive and provocative title of Hardcore chamber music was not
recorded for another three years, by which time Koch was working with
electronics as an extension of his reeds, as well as with sampling/
sequencing. In the ten years that have followed, the trio has
recorded frequently and collaborated with a wide variety of
musicians: from Egypt, from Cuba, with DJs, and with poetry/spoken word.

another Frakture outing featuring the Frakture3 & Harry Gallimore for the
BBC on the big screen,
come on down,
Big Screen Liverpool, Clayton Square
Thursday 29th October
7pm until approx. 8.30pm
FREE
Fonik, No Ian Simpson but yes: Harry Galimore
a.P.a.T.t. (Liverpool)
Frakture3: Phil Morton, Adam Webster, Simon Jones
saw player Ragnhield Zeigler (Norway)
The BBC Big Screen Liverpool brings you Unsilent Night - an evening of
silent film coupled with live new music - in Clayton Square.
Unsilent Night is a free public screening of classic silent shorts and
archive film celebrating early pioneers in collaboration with contemporary
musicians from across the North West. BBC Radio Merseyside's Popular Music
Show (PMS) will host Fonik, a.P.a.T.t. (Liverpool) Frakture3: performing
newly commissioned soundtracks to each film as they are broadcast live in
Clayton Square, asserting a connection between historic and contemporary
methods in cinematic composition.
Shorts include arguably the first ever narrative film The Great Train
Robbery (1903); a man whose affliction sets the world shaking in That Fatal
Sneeze (1903); Georges Méliès' dreamlike Voyage a travers l'impossible
(1904); the Arabian tale of Aladin ou la lampe merveilleuse (1906) plus Tea
Party and Jitter Bug, exclusive edits by TanDog of Prelinger Archive footage
of Disneyland in the 1960s and New York World Fair (1939 – 40).
Last year's feature-length screening of Nosferatu with a new score by local
musicians attracted more than 500 people. This month's event will comprise
of shorts lasting ten minutes or less, enabling observers to come and go
during a more flexible viewing schedule. Bren O'Callaghan, the BBC's Big
Screen Manager says, 'We wanted to continue the partnership [between silent
film and modern music] but try something new, instead of returning to the
''one fat film'' format. Generally speaking, the screen appeals to transient
audiences so, even though we know that during our special events people will
stick around for longer, I wanted to also reach out to passers-by and those
shopping at the adjacent supermarket on their way home…'
Viewers are in for some unforgettable moments, Bren continues, 'It's also an
attempt to show that early cinema doesn't have to be locked away in a
cupboard and can still appeal, or even shock, modern audiences - I defy
anyone not to be creeped out by the genie in Aladdin - it's not every day
you see a 7ft giant in a green body stocking with a full nappy hump and a
tangerine beard - it's the stuff of nightmares!' Perhaps it is appropriate,
then, that the event precedes Halloween weekend and the public are advised
to please dress warmly for changeable evening weather as this is an outdoor
event.
The public will be able to view the music performance at BBC Merseyside
subject to maximum capacity, though the films themselves accompanied by the
live score can only be seen at the BBC Big Screen Liverpool in Clayton
Square. This event is free and limited outdoor seating will be provided.
For audiences at the BBC Big Screen, Norwegian saw player Ragnhield Zeigler
will perform her ethereal compositions between brief changeover periods.
The musical soundtracks will be recorded and broadcast on BBC Radio
Merseyside's Popular Music Show on Sundays with Roger Hill and Karen Timms
at midnight during the following weeks.

Metastablesound, in conjunction with Balance Point Acoustics records,
is excited to announce a Chicago performance of the Chicago/Bay Area
collaboration ‘Ausfegen’ that reunites the quartet of Paul Hartsaw
(saxophones) and Jerome Bryerton (percussion) from Chicago, and
Kristian Aspelin (ele guitar) and Damon Smith (double bass) from the
Bay Area.
This is the first Chicago performance for this quartet since the 2007
release of their CD, Ausfegen: Dedicated to Joseph Beuys.
"“Here's an example of highly experimental jazz that is executed in a
way that avoids being overly daunting or completely inaccessible.
While many of the most experimental jazz albums today incorporate
elevated Ayler-esque raucousness or spacey minimalism, "Ausfegen"
manages to be both quiet and highly interactive..."
- Mike Szajewski, WNUR Jazz

Hi there Euro-Improv Group!
Just a reminder that Vultures gig with Sri Sandeep Mishra, Indian classical
sarangi master, and electronics powerhouse Steve Beresford is tomorrow night!
The concert takes place at the Nave, 1 St. Paul's Road N1 2QN, near Highbury and
Islington station (corner of Essex and St. Paul's Road). Doors at 7:30, show at
8:00, £10/£5concs. The show is one set Indian classical, one set improvised
music.
Check out some of Sandeep's classical prowess here:
http://www.myspace.com/sarangiofbarnabas
There are some tickets left, but they are selling fast, so follow this link to
reserve your seat:
http://www.wegottickets.com/location/867
(Click on the Sandeep Mishra show, either full price or concessions as
appropriate, and follow the instructions)
There is a misprint in the concert description on the Nave site: it states that
Sandeep plays sarangi and sitar, however he only plays sarangi and that is what
he will be playing at this concert.
Thank you and I hope to see you there!

Yes -- I said cassette! Actually, we have two limited-edition cassettes from our
electro-noise band, Schnüffler. Both feature long-form, textural improvisations
featuring Liz on processed trumpet and me coaxing schmutz from some analog
synths (including the Blippoo box and Metasonix tube-synth, the Wretch Machine).
Buero Bereich on Holy Cheever Church ($8 ppd in the US) is an edition of 70 with
lovely yellow graphics in a trad k7 case. A review can be seen here:
http://earconditionednightmare.blogspot.com/2009/05/schnuffler-buero-bereich-hol\
y-cheever.html
Rauschbereich on Resipiscent ($10 ppd in the US) is a gorgeously packaged
edition of 56 in a 8.25"x12" library-style binder, with hand-made artwork by
Liz. It's a little more expensive because of its size when shipping.
If you'd like copies of either, contact me off-list. Thanks!
On Friday, June 12th, Firehouse 12's 2009 Spring Jazz Series
<http://firehouse12.com/performance_space_calendar.asp> will conclude
with a two-set performance by Dutch jazz heavyweights, Trio
BraamDeJoodeVatcher <http://www.youtube.com/user/BikBentBraam>. Led by
pianist/composer Michiel Braam <http://www.michielbraam.com/>, and
featuring bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Michael Vatcher, the
group is touring North America in June and July, performing new
compositions and welcoming a local improviser into the group at each
stop. For this event, the trio's late set will feature special guest
cornetist, and Firehouse 12 Records
<http://firehouse12.com/firehouse12_records.asp> co-founder, Taylor Ho
Bynum <http://taylorhobynum.com/>.
"If only more jazz were as much fun as Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher," wrote
Dutch jazz aficionado Kevin Whitehead in the Chicago Sun-Times. "These
guys make it giddy fun you can't get enough of. This trio is a
treasure." Critics have also credited the group with "a persuasive,
original sound grounded in the best traditions of Dutch improvised
music" (Jazzwise), "some of the most confident and enjoyable piano work
I've heard in recent years" (Dan Warburton, Paris Transatlantic) and
"charting a path that is both avant-garde and instantly engaging and
accessible" (Dave Lynch, All Music Guide).
Since 1989, the members of Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher have joyfully
brought freedom and adventure to the performance of acoustic jazz. Like
many Dutch musicians, the trio originally focused on the music of
Thelonious Monk, but soon began performing Braam's inclusive and
irreverent compositions, with each musician playing an equal role in
their realization. The band has released three CDs since 1998,
including its most recent recording, 2006's Change This Song
<http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5451741> (BBB),
which features 18 short compositions, each named after an anagram of the
album's title. Learn more at http://www.michielbraam.com

Hello Emailing List Folks!
Vultures have two exciting gigs this weekend! First, on Friday 12 June,
we invade Nunhead, south of the river for a grand evening of noisy
goodness, featuring Ampersand, Ryan Jordan with Mat Hourteillan,
Cheapmachines, and Zolan Wobble's One True Dog.
The show starts at 19:30 at the Ivy House, 40 Stuart Rd. SE15 3 BE.
£5/£3 concs., so bring those student ids and UB40 papers!
Then, on Saturday 13 June during the day, Vultures will be providing
sound and visuals for a dance installation in Edmonton. Rebecca Bogue
and Jane Munro are participating in an ongoing art presentation arranged
by Sumer Erek and supported by the Enfield Council in which she and her
co-artists will dance/perform in a store front during "shopping hours"
to the music of Vultures, allowing passers by to "window shop" between
12:00 and 16:00. Please do come out and see this borough sponsored event!
The event takes place at the Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, North Mall,
Unit 4, Edmonton Green, N9. It's free - you're just window shopping
after all!
In other news: we're still finalizing the last few dates, but Vultures
is proud to announce that we will be traveling with Post Abortion Stress
this summer to join them in providing live sound tracks for a new series
of films by NYC film maker Robert Pepper! So far the tour is taking us
north, then to the continent through Holland, Germany, and even
Macedonia! We end up back in London for the 8 year anniversary
celebration at Boat Ting, Temple Pier. This is all happening from 22
August through 07 September (see our website for details -
http://www.myspace.com/justvultures)
Finally some releases will be emerging before that summer tour and maybe
even before our show this weekend! Tursa records compilation,
distributed through Cold Spring, will be out before the end of the
summer as will appearances on Against the Stream records, Love Torture
records, and a 4-way split on Black Pyramid records with three other
fabulous noise bands!
We are also proud to announce that we will participating in the
Dictaphonia Project spearheaded by Hal McGee, artist, improviser, and
composer from Gainsville, Florida, USA, in which a compilation of
dictaphone based recordings will be published by Hal with support from a
government grant. Should be an exciting release!
That's enough bombardment for now. There's more things on the stove too:
t-shirts, a slew of upcoming shows, an Italian tour, and several more
recordings being mixed down for various labels, but more on these things
later.
Thanks and as always, if you wish to be removed from this list, no
worries! Just ask.
Take care and we'll see you this weekend!
Will aka Seesar / Vultures

Snap: out of it sessions in Free Improvised Music welcome all levels of
musicianship and musicians who are willing to participate and engage in the
music. Not unlike a walk or a chat with friends free improvised music is a
music that does not know its destination at the point of departure. Openness
to listening, interaction, and creative new ideas are central to the music
we create in this workshop. All welcome
Phil Morton has 30 years experience in the nature and practice of free
improvisation. Pauline Oliveros, Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton, Steve
Beresford, Simon H. Fell, Carlos Zingaro are a few important artists he has
worked closely with. Since 1997 involvement in Frakture organisation has
brought him into contact with hundreds of artists involved in all areas of
the creative arts informing his own practice. In 1998 the work of Murray R
Schaffer and the concept of acoustic ecology came to Phil’s attention and
broadened his interest beyond the boundaries of music and into sound. The
act of listening itself now became a key feature of his work. Phil has made
presentations at two conferences; designed and led listening-projects; and
as a musician he has worked nationally and internationall
