Reviews
:papercutz - /Lylac/
Very much recommended to those with a taste for electronica or pop music with a
twist - pop music doesn't have to be the cheesy stuff you find on the charts;
sometimes you get albums like this, filled with melodies, rhythms and vocals,
that uplifts, inspires and somehow restores a little faith that music can still
surprise you and still give you something new. Sweet, soothing and
intoxicating...

SE - /Epiphora/
With an altogether ethereal feel, this isn't like clear-cut IDM, as instruments
aren't buried under a slab of unintelligible glitches - in fact, it's the
glitches that take a back seat and lets the instrumentation take you somewhere
different. An absolute must have for those with a Gridlock-shaped loss in their
lives, and for everyone else, this is just recommended to show you that
electronic can be tear-inducingly beautiful.

Coreline - /Bone and Blood as Stone and Mud/
It's sometimes been hard to reconcile the two facets of Chris McCall's output -
the seemingly ultra-serious music and the joyously insane live shows. But here,
somehow, we may have the missing link at last. Like some kind of mad scientist
(or inventor?) anything that may work is hurled into the mix - presumably from a
safe distance just in case it blows up in his face - and it's to his immense
credit that the vast majority of these ideas actually work

Cyclotimia - /Music For Stockmarkets/
A challenging soundscape with some excellent moments of chill, dark electronica
featuring the unique sounds of vintage Soviet equipment and field recordings.
It's like the reserved, avant-garde cousin of Oil 10, the guy that sits in the
corner somewhere on the edge of serenity and anxiety while everyone else is out
back having a beer.

Surma - /Allocutio/
Surma's initial foray into the desolate world of martial ambient electronics, on
the split EP "Viltis" (shared with fellow Eastern Front grouch-merchants,
Kreuzer) was exciting listening, hinting at a potential far beyond the
pedestrian doom-and-gloom peddled en masse by similar artists in the genre.
Thus, the debut album, "Allocutio" has more than its fair share of hype to live
up to...

Aphorism - /Surge/
Fresh from Chicago comes Aphorism's "Surge", a conventional electronica album
that somehow fell in with a bad crowd and came out reeking of industrial and IDM
fallout. While it may not be the most exciting release within the darker side of
technoid, Aphorism's "Surge" is nevertheless worth listening to.

Noises of Russia - /Experimental Structure/
Documents a live performance by Noises of Russia in St. Petersburg and a musical
departure from the death industrial commonly associated with Noises Of Russia -
offering instead improvised collages of field recordings from nature, treated
instruments, shamanistic chants and sparse industrial noises. Together they form
a soundscape which conveys an impression of the performance as a very esoteric
experience.

Samarkande - /3 Synapses/
Samarkande are introduced on their website as an apparently experimental group
that create by way of improvisation, and to "break the rigidity of
electro-acoustic and electronic music". Quite what the latter point means in
practice is a difficult one to answer, it seems.
