With summer in full swing I am on a short vacation in New England. As I enjoyed
the trendy urban park in lower manhattan established on an abandoned raised
railroad track, my musical thoughts turned to lyrics which describe a girl
walking...

In my long dress, my high heels, my
fancy stockings
I was walking home from a long night...
In the bright light of day
from In The Bright Light Of Day -
Words & Music by Anne McCue

The image written by singer/songwriter Anne McCue is so clear that I as I walk,
I look
for such a young woman in the crowd. I wonder if she has taken off her heels
and
swings them from her hand. I ask my companions (a few relatives who have joined
me
for the afternoon) what music they are listening to at this moment but their
thoughts
are elsewhere.

The next lines of McCue's lyric draws me deeper into the spell of the song...

Will you love me?
Will you dare?
When I see you again will I even care?
In the sunlight, through the air
There's a feeling of loss I could only bear
In the bright light of day
from In The Bright Light Of Day -
Words & Music by Anne McCue

A blog on this lyric describes the subject's walk as a "walk of shame" -
something done
by women walking home from a one night tryst while they "second guess" their
actions.
I have a different take on the song, I think of it as the last night spent with
a lover that
the subject has decided to leave. I like the ambiguity. There may be more
explanations.

Music never leaves my mind. When the song ends I switch to another by a
different
singer songwriter and the soundtrack to my visit to the park continues. To date
I have
yet to purchase an Ipod. With music so available who needs one? There is an
interesting point to be made about Eva's music in this context. I usually never
hear
her songs in my head. I find that the timing to complex to easily remember.
It's one
of the reasons after so many years of listening to her records that they have
yet to
get old.

What music are you listening to in your mind?
