Here is a brief quote form this article:
--
Timmins reached out to representatives for Mitchell and Taylor, and after much
back-and-forth secured the rights to release the concert. A two-disc CD, along
with a booklet containing photos from the show, has been released by Greenpeace
through the organization's Web site. Timmins said he is still struck by what he
calls the "pristine simplicity" of the concert. "It's one player, sitting in
front of
10,000 people, with two microphones," he said. "They played in a more intimate
way then in an arena than people play today in cafes."

OT: No Eva Content
A new recording has just been issued of a 1970 concert
which Joni and James gave. I know very little about
the event or the Greenpeace connection to the resale
of the product. I'll leave that to you to research.
On this site you can listen for free to songs -
Use the MUSIC webpage. Don't miss Joni singing

My own choice was to immediately place an order
for the recording. Oh my. Oh my.....

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the comment. Susan Boyle's first release has created
a stir in the press. The "bar" that she is measured against is
a similar collection of singers (including Eva).

"I Dreamed a Dream" is an album in the vein of Barbra Streisand,
Eva Cassidy and Bette Midler — and on it, Boyle proves that her
voice is powerful and malleable enough to place her in the company
of those respected talents.
--
Quite obviously, delivering emotion is only part of the challenge
a great singer passes. It is emotion combined with great phrasing
and vocal quality - and of course a great song.
I've often thought about Chris Biondo's observations. For Eva,
I think they really speak to her gift.
As I mangled paraphrasing his quote (due to my own poor
editing)...here again is the last part of my post...
--
In a radio program about Eva, Chris Biondo explains that in his
opinion when you go to the movies you want to laugh and you want to
cry and that in music it is Eva Cassidy who delivers that emotion.

PS - When things at the sports bar really did calm down I talked
with Coles about her music. I'm hoping to have another profile
about her done soon.
Scott,
I've heard Eva compared to Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald and share that opinion.
Singers of that caliber just don't go away. I believe Eva's fame is still on the
rise and will eventually level off and maintain at a high level for many years.
She was no run of the mill singer!
Also, how annoying to have Coles competing with football. What were they
thinking?!!
Dennis
How much of the allure of Eva's music lies in the enjoyment of music by a new
artist? In the UK and neighboring countries the time has long passed where the
question can be asked. Mentioning Eva's first name alone is enough to receive
an acknowledgement - "yes, I know that singer."
In the United States, the name Eva is more likely to draw the response, "Eva
who?"
For those of us "yanks" who are in the know, will our enthusiasm temper when
she finally becomes famous in her own country? I'd like to say the answer is an
unqualified "No" yet I'll admit that my own interest in following musicians may
suggest otherwise.
A few years back, I followed the band, Switchfoot. I drove long distances to
hear
them play and stayed hours after the show to do what was necessary to talk with
the band members. As one of the oldest members of the routinely teenage
audience I would always strike up conversations with parents who were at the
show to accompany their kids. Occasionally these "adults" were just as I was,
fanatical about the band - their melodic songs and well crafted lyrics. We'd
shake
our heads about the band's continued obscurity. When the band did find national
success I thought that I'd continue my interest. In actuality I stopped going
to
their concerts. The venue were bigger as were the crowds and being part of the
crowd just wasn't as fun.
I wonder how I would have greeted Eva's fame in this country. How long would
I have counted myself as a top tier fan? I believe there are some artists that
deserve you remaining as fans in all types of weather and that Eva was that
special.
This past weekend I again drove far out of town to hear my favorite
singer/songwriter, Coles Whalen. I've told Coles that to my ear, she is a
master chief mixing just the right portions of melody and emotion together to
make her songs. Coles is still largely undiscovered as an artist though this
year
that situation will certainly change - her music is just too good not to draw
attention.
The Alabama venue I traveled to is a sports bar call Heroes - complete with flat
panel TV's on the walls which continued showing the local college football games
during her show. The atmosphere was more like a prize fight between the singer
and the TVs than it was a concert. In the midst of heartfelt song introductions
by Coles, shouts of "Touchdown!" made it clear that only a small portion of the
audience was listening to her. At the two minute warning signaling the end of
the game, with the outcome no longer in question, half of the audience finished
their beer and headed to their cars for the trip home. For those who stayed,
Coles continued singing - two more sets - into the late evening. Patrons
danced to her songs. The venue manager mentioned to me that he is planning
on booking her again next year when she returns with a full band. "She so good
I'm going to make certain she gets on the radio so we can fill the place with
people who will listen."
In my heart, Coles' music holds a place very similar to Eva's. I listen because
I want to feel emotionally involved. Both singers engage you with phrasing
that emphasizes lyric meaning. Both singers where also deliver songs loaded
with melody and wide ranging vocals. For me, this is what will keep me
listening for years no matter how popular they become. In a radio program
about Eva, Chris Biondo explains that in his opinion when you go to the movies
you want to laugh and you want to cry and that it's Eva Cassidy that delivery
that emotion in music. At some point the thrill of the chase to fame for both
Eva and Coles will end. I suspect that for some, the thrill of finding a singer
before anyone else will make them less interesting. For me, just as Chris said,
I just want to laugh and cry when I listen to music. I'll still be in the
audience.
Warm regards,
Scott

PS - In two weeks I see another largely unknown singer, Anne McCue, who
is in Atlanta for a rare visit. I still do so enjoy the thrill of emerging
singers!

Hi Folks -
Here's a quick followup to the Coles Whalen house concert
I helped arrange near Atlanta Georgia. In an audience of
nearly forty people I was one of the very few who knew
of her music.
By intermission, I had person after person coming up to me
and asking how I had learned about her. Well - truth be told,
I wrote to this group in 2006 about my discovery.
Here's the post:
http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/evacassidy/message/3641
At the end of house concert the audience was quickly on
their feet generating more applause then has ever taken
place in that livingroom. For me it was a dream come true
as I have never heard Coles sing to an audience that
came to listen only to her. I should have never doubted
that it would be anything but a complete success.
Here's a video of Coles in action at another venue...

I'm currently working on a new profile of Coles which I
hope to share with this group shortly.

I enjoy perusing Laura Bligh's guestbook at her wonderful Eva Cassidy website
every once in a while. It's great to see heartfelt posts on nearly a daily basis
by people who are just now becoming aquainted with Eva. What an amazing word of
mouth Phenominon! It's like a giant boulder was dropped in a pond when Eva died.
The ripples just keep going on and on!
Dennis
Too many times over the years I have tried to think of how Eva's
career might have been different. I have long since given up on
thinking about a possible record label signing. From what I know
now, record contracts are mainly about how well the artist will sell
in the record lotto game not the artistry involved with the music.
Sounds obvious doesn't it?
So - lets not debate over what factors blocked these contracts or
what events might have obstructed a contract from being signed.
Instead, I am intrigued by the issue of what you and I could have
done as fans. Would we have been able to make a difference?
This month in the Atlanta area sing/songwriter Coles Whalen
makes two appearances in the Atlanta area. I helped facilitate
both. Last week during the first of the two concerts I was
able to realize a dream, listening to Coles sing to an audience
who had come just to hear her sing. Over the years I had
caught her act at various venues where people were using her
as background music as they talked to friends or eat dinner.
Occasionally I had attended a concert where she shared the
stage with another artist. Imagine how you would feel if
you went to hear Eva sing and then have to hear a short set.
In Marietta Georgia last weekend, the evening was Coles' but
the spirit was in some strange way Eva Cassidy's because of
of my obligation to Eva to spread the word for artists who
deserve to be heard yet are still emerging in popularity and
not yet known by the public. Like Terry Wogan said,
"We'll take a bit of credit..." for sharing this music.
Tonight in Lawrenceville Georgia the second house concert
takes place. For anyone who lives nearby, take a chance
and contact the host, there may still be seats remaining.
Here is a like to a news article that talks about the concert
and my involvement:

d=518326897
or
http://tinyurl.com/yaq442t
Have a listen to the song "Wrecking Ball" on the main page of this site
and ask yourself if it isn't music that you immediately identify with.
That was my feeling when I first heard both Coles Whalen and
Eva Cassidy.
I don't know if the House concert movement in the U.S. had begun
during Eva's lifetime or even if she would have been open to booking
one. I can say that because of Eva, when I am deeply moved by an artist
I can no longer sit back and simply hope that their music is heard. Doing
something to help the artist in the absence of involvement by a record label
is too compelling to avoid.

CASSIDY BROTHER EVA SO GOOD
by TIM FLETCHER (Burtron Mail)
A DUO featuring the brother of late American songstress Eva Cassidy is
to perform to audiences in Burton and Ashby.
<snip>
Eva's brother, Dan Cassidy (pictured), played on many of her recordings,
but is also an acclaimed musician in his own right and a virtuoso fiddle
player.
Now based in Iceland, he plays alongside roots, folk, Celtic and blues
performer James Hickman, best known as a member of BBC Radio 2 Young
Folk Awards winners Uiscedwr, at Ashby's Venture Theatre next Friday and
i the Dove Room at Burton Town Hall the following Friday.
The gigs have been arranged by Ashbybased musician Brian Langtry, a
member of Black Country folk band Giggetty, and Les Grice, from Branston,
who visited the Cassidys' parents at the house where Eva grew up in
Bowie, Maryland, while on a visit to the States in 2001.
"I wrote to the family to say how much I enjoyed Eva's music and how
I hoped one day to visit their area, and out of the blue they invited me to
go and spend the day with them," he says.
"It was when Eva was just starting to break very big over here and they
were taking phone calls from all over the place. The interest in her had
come as a total shock to them.
<snip>
Les teamed up with his co-promoter after being `blown away' by
Over The Rainbow — the touring stage show which Brian wrote
tracing Eva's life — and reckons the two gigs will be a treat for
fans of a wide range of genres, encompassing swing, blues, country,
bluegrass and trad folk.
"We're expecting people who know Eva's work to come along as
there is that connection and Dan has played on a lot of her songs," he says.
"But we think it will also appeal to anyone who is interested in good
musicianship and an eclectic mix of different styles."
Dan Cassidy and James Hickman play at the Venture Theatre, in
North Street, Ashby, on Friday, November 13, and at the Dove Room
at Burton Town Hall on Friday, November 20, with both gigs
starting at 7.45pm.

"Music I Love" is a phrase at the top of a new website developed by
singer/songwriter Mae Robinson to spread the word about artist she
admires. Every month Mae writes a little about her feelings for the
songs of two songwriters and provides links so you can make up
your own mind.
Imagine how this could have worked for Eva - an artist there is so much
to talk about. I know Mae has always admired Eva so we may see Eva
at some time in the future on this website. In the meantime have a listen
to some great songwriting. Like Eva was during her lifetime, these folks
are little known but their talent deserves your attention.

Scott in Georgia, USA,
Thank you for pointing this out. Sometimes these things go unnoticed while
we are so entranced by the overall affect.
You're right, it's time to re-listen. What a talent, what a loss but, but as
the song says, "The joy you gave me lives on and on." "I still hear your
voice." and "you're still her, beside me, every day." Though I don't know
Eva or her music by heart, these words so true for me, even though I came to
hear her music only recently.
Last night, I posted something to my blog about losing good people.just my
personal thoughts but some of them are pertinent to people like Eva. If
anyone is interested, you can read it at
http://www.itsaboutstartingover.com/2009/10/30/on-life-and-living/
The most relevant part is toward the end, ".the people we love live on in
our memories, in our photo albums, in our prose, poetry and songs and
sometimes, in our CD collections."
And thank you to Stephen from Toronto for the link to Ashley Martinez.

I think this is called "experiencing Eva-lution." It's what happens to
people when they listen to Eva's recordings, me included.
What an amazing artist she was.

Listening to Eva Cassidy sing "Know You By Heart", I was taken by her use of
dynamics on the phrase.."Whispering like the wind"
Ever notice that she is counter intuitive on this lyric. The word
"Whispering" is emphasized with loudness while wind is hushed.
Time to listen for more such examples....

Dear All,
There was a HUGE surge in views in Eva's rendition of "Over the Rainbow" this
the weekend (at least 30,000 hits) -- coming from Slovakia, Hungary, The
Czech Republic, Poland and Germany. When I asked why on my comment
thread, here was an answer:
"I think, It's because Czech Republic and Slovakia (us) we have currently an
international version of song contest "Czechoslovakia is looking for a
Superstar". Yesterday one girl decided to sing this song and I guess
people wanted to hear an original version and compare. this is also the reason,
why I looked for this song :) You can see how Karolina handled the song if you
will look for "KAROLÍNA MAJERNÍKOVÁ Somewhere over the Rainbow."
Here's a link to the singer who spurred the interest:

Oh, how I love to watch the spread of Eva's beautiful music around the world!
All the best,
Linda
October falls a month before the month of Eva's death. It is also a time when I
continue to feel her longing for summer. In the south east of the United
States, this year summer almost decided not to leave and I wonder how Eva would
have felt about that. Maybe too much of a good thing needs to be taken in
moderation.
To my knowledge there have been no recent important news stories related to
Eva. There continues to be no information on the movie that film director Amy
Redford has talked about for Eva. Anyone interested in Amy should have a look
at her debut movie, The Guitar. Most of the people I've talked to who have seen
it liked it. Some of these are Eva fans while others are just movie buffs. I
was quite taken by the movie and believe Amy is the perfect person to direct a
movie about Eva. My guess is that we will have to wait for better economic
times until we heard of progress on the film.
This group has traditionally embraced new of other emerging artists. Tonight I
went to hear Bonnie Bishop. Although Bonnie has neither a direct or an indirect
connection to Eva I could not help thinking about Eva through much of the show
as Bonnie commanded the stage and drew appropriate support from a full band.
There is nothing more rewarding than watching an artist move into the national
spotlight as the qualities of their recordings grow. If you haven't heard
Bonnie don't wast any time. Here are some links:

When I have the occasional conversation with someone who knew
Eva Cassidy the urge to ask, "why", is so overwhelming I often
yield to it. Why didn't people hear what is so obvious in
her music? That she sang each word one at a time instead of
singing on phrase at a time. That her musical surefootness was
uncanny - she would follow her own original arrangement using
notes few would ever guess would be used for an already well
worn song.
There are a few singers who touring now who I need to say,
Yes - I hear that! This week I am busy telling others about
these musicians because they will shortly have a brief touch
down in the Atlanta area.
Here's one....Bonnie Bishop will finally return to Eddies Attic
in October. I tell people she sounds like Bonnie Raitt but that
doesn't begin to cover what I hear. I wrote down the words to
Bonnie's songs as I listen to her newest album, "Things I Know".
Usually songs fall into verses that are arranged like a poem -
one line at a time. Bonnie's songs are different. They display
best as a single paragraph and read like a very short story.
Here's an example...
Things I Know - Music and Lyrics By Bonnie Bishop
I don't know a thing beyond this room. I was born in this house sun and
moon. There's no memory of love there's no past to regret. There's just
you and me lying in this bed. And the world outside, oh its anyone's
guess. And I've lost track of time and forgotten the rest. But the
things that I know are the smell of your skin and the way that you
tremble when you came crashing in. And I'll take my comfort in your sweet
kiss. And when you love me I know love exists in the things we know. They
say woman is a ruby and I'm a poor man I'm told. And I've never seen a
ruby, God but I've held you my flesh and bones. If faith is unseen then
mine's growin' cold and I can't sleep tonight for there's doubt in my
soul. But the things that I know are the smell of your skin and the way
that you tremble when you came crashin in. So I'll take my comfort in
your sweet kiss and when you love me I know love exists in the things we
know - Oh Baby come in and lock that door. I may not have much but what
I have is yours. Cause you're all I know. The smell of your skin and
the way that you tremble when you came crashin in.
Warm regards,
Scott

Yes, one remains hopeful. I have an idea it will be the Internet and word of
mouth, rather than commercial radio that enables it in the States. Unforthcoming
professional recognition is all the indication we need that awards are just
publicity generators for profit. In a world where Grammies were distributed
according to the significance of the artistic contribution, Eva clearly deserves
to be there with the greats.
So I get a thrill whenever I hear Eva`s name mentioned as deserving to be in the
company of all-time great musicians, or even better, so mentioned by those
artists themselves.
Anyway, that's one of the best written and most moving articles about Eva I have
read. And there are so many articles that are so much more than just a run of
the mill review. Writers who "get" Eva seem to feel a need, or a responsibility
to search extra deep for the words to do her justice.
