Peter.
THIS IS IT! We are nearing the big day when the Evangenitals and The 1
Second Film crew departs for a full month on the Road to Oprah.
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT at Molly Malones we will be playing our last show
in Los Angeles before our departure. It's the last chance to grab an
advanced copy our new album "Everlovin" and give us hugs, kisses, and
well-wishes to carry with us on the long, long 10,000 mile drive
across the US and Canada.
It would be great to see as many friendly faces as possible before
our departure (and to be perfectly honest... we could really use the
money!!)
The show is only $6. We play at 11pm, and we have a real special
guest playing with us. Come-n-get-it!
The full lineup for the evening is:
9:00 Randy Sacks
10:00 Taylor Greenwood
11:00 The Evangenitals
Your presence would mean the world to us.
Saturday September 29th
11pm
Molly Malones
575 S Fairfax Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90036
And if you ain't in LA, we hope to see you on the ROAD TO OPRAH!!!
p.s.
And if you can't make it, know that I love getting any response at
all to these emails just to know that they are reaching out and
touching you... hopefully in a way that you like. :-)

So.... you may have heard about The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah tour
by now... Goodness knows I've been talking about it enough.
You probably know that the Evangenitals are going to be the "road
band" for The 1 Second Film's Road to Oprah tour, and we will be
traveling over 10,000 miles in a bio-diesel school bus from October
4th - November 2nd, presenting and performing at Universities and
house parties across the US and Canada -- final destination, Oprah
Winfrey.
You may not have heard that we have received official invitations from
both Google and YouTube to present and perform at their corporate
headquarters next weekend. Also, Apple computers and Von Dutch have
just come on board as "stuff" sponsors, donating editing equipment and
software (Apple) and T-Shirts and marketing support (Von Dutch) for
The 1 Second Film.
We have bought a school bus and are converting it to bio-diesel with
sleeping cots and kitchen, awesome exterior paint job, credit-stand
caboose, and a bunch of other down-home features that will help to
make the experience of 8 people living together on a bus for a month a
bearable one.
All of this has been accomplished with a lot of work, a lot of
willingness, a good dose of insane idealism, and a LOT of dollar by
dollar fund-raising in the form of selling producer credits for The 1
Second Film.
This is where you come in. :-)
Corporate sponsors are beginning to take notice and donate much needed
gear and goods, colleges and universities are booking our traveling
show to come to their school, more and more producers are coming on
board every day... and we still need to raise about $20,000 to cover
the food and most basic living expenses of our cast and crew.
The Evangenitals are taking a major chance by hitting the road, taking
leave of well-paying jobs and loved ones. We're hoping that it pays
off -- in the spiritual sense -- and doesn't crush us in the financial
sense, either.
If you have been sitting on the fence in regards to getting yourself a
producer credit on The 1 Second Film, I encourage you to act now and
seal the deal. This is potentially the largest collaborative work of
art ever created, and I would love for you to be a part of it.
You can create a producer profile and donate to the film here:
http://the1secondfilm.com/donate
If you don't want a credit for yourself, for whatever reason, you can
help the Evangenitals move up the credit-listing ranks by donating
through OUR profile!
Check it out:
http://the1secondfilm.com/producer/7226
Your support of The 1 Second Film will be like buying us all a hot
meal on the Road to Oprah, and helping us spread the Evangenitals love
all over the 10,000 miles of road that we are going to cover on this
journey.
If you'd like to make your support a little more direct, you could
always buy an Evangenitals album (http://cdbaby.com/cd/evangenitals),
download our music off iTunes, or simply send us a few bucks in the
mail. We take checks! :-)
IN OTHER NEWS...
If you are located anywhere along the Road to Oprah, we hope to see
you on our travels! We are setting up shows and presentations every
step of the way and we're always looking for volunteers, coordinators,
other artists to perform with, and an audience to perform for.
Please check out the Road to Oprah map and schedule to see if we're
coming to your town, and let me know if you'd like to help out,
perform, or participate!
http://www.roadtooprah.com/map
Thanks for being a friend of the Evangenitals. We truly would not have
the balls to take this trip if it wasn't for all the love and support
the Evangenitals have received from folks like you. I hope to see you
soon!
Much Love,
Juli Crockett

Greetings, friend of the Evangenitals!

Can you feel it?
The events of the next few weeks could determine the very course of
the life and career of The Evangenitals and those that love them. If
we play our proverbial cards right, we may find ourselves, in this
moment, teetering on the edge of the Tipping Point -- about to plunge
into the cool pool of the Next Big Thing.
It all, pretty much, depends on you. No pressure. ;-)
Here's the deal: In the coming weeks, we will be sending out some
"Calls to Action" -- simple things that you can do to help us spread
the good word about The Evangenitals and our new soon-to-be-released
album "Everlovin" -- that when done collectively could make a radical
impact on our place in the music world. Simple as that. It doesn't
matter if you live in Los Angeles or England, there are actions that
anyone, anywhere can take to help us make our dream a reality.
Here's 4 things to whet your whistle:
1. Send this show flier to anyone who might care:
http://www.evangenitals.com/images/hugeindie103flier.jpg
We're trying to spread the word to the whole wide world, even if they
can't make it to the show.
2. Request the Evangenitals on Indie 103.1:
http://www.indie1031.fm/requests/request.php
Indie 103.1 is a sponsor of the Universal CityWalk event, and it
would be cool to get some airplay before the big gig... or at least
let them know that we've got some friends and fans out there so when
we hand them the new album they will be all hot and bothered to spin
it. Barrage them with requests! No mercy!
3. Blog, bulletin, brag about The Evangenitals. Please tell your
friends, your family, your acquaintances and distant relatives about
The Evangenitals. If you have a website, please link to us. Add us
to your favorites on your online profiles and/or put us in your
Myspace "Top 8". Don't be ashamed to admit our hot, passionate love
affair to all who will listen. Spread the news!
4. Come to the Show!
http://www.evangenitals.com/calendar.html
On Saturday September 1st at 8pm we will be playing a FREE show for
what could be our biggest audience yet. It's Labor Day weekend at
Universal Citywalk and although you may think that we don't need the
extra bodies in the crowd, it would be really, really nice to have
some friendly faces, love, support, and folks that love the music to
dance, sing, and cheer us on. Heck, you can even take the Metro and
not pay for parking. :-)
Those 4 actions could start a snowball rolling that will take us all
the way to the big time! Let's do it.
More action coming your way soon....

This
time is now! I need as many folks as I can to "digg" the following
article on Digg.com to help us get it pushed up in the rankings! I
thought there may be a good chance that some of my 'ol EGS media nuts
may be familar with Digg, or at least willing to participate in a web
phenomena. :-)
The simple action of you Digging this article could take my band and this project one step closer to infamy!
The
last time we played Molly Malone's, a bunch of you turned out to see a
legendary set on amazing stage with great sound and successfully helped
us to win our spot as "Lords of Hollywood" for a day. JT the booker was
so pleased he has invited us back for another dose of Evangenital joy,
this Saturday night!
Now, here's the catch: we want to out-do
the last appearance. So, I've got a proposition for you: if we draw 50+
people to Molly Malone's to see the Evangenitals practice their A-game
for the upcoming Universal City gig and Road to Oprah tour I hereby
declare that I, Juli Crockett, will have a star in the HEAVENS ABOVE
named EVANGENITALS in your honor. Our own STAR, people! That will help
when the earth shakes us off its back like a bad case of fleas. We can
all go to our STAR!
Mark my words! And mark the time to our tunes with snapping fingers, bobbing heads, and dancing feet at our triumphant return to Molly Malones THIS SATURDAY NIGHT:
This Saturday, August 11th, at 11pm Evangenitals @ Molly Malones 575 South Fairfax Ave Los Angeles, CA 90036 $6
Full line up: 8:00 David Courtney, 9:00 Doschus, 10:00 Bruce Beacom... And the ones that truly love you: The Evangenitals (11PM)
And heck, here's an Irish Blessing for the road, to guide your way to the Evangenitals at Molly Malones:
Walls for the wind, And a roof for the rain, And drinks beside the fire - Laughter to cheer you And those you love near you, And all that your heart may desire!
If
you live far away and/or have some REALLY GOOD REASON why you won't
help us get a STAR for us all to immigrate to (should the need/desire
arrive) you can help us in another way...
By donating $1 or more to The 1 Second Film (http://www.the1secondfilm.com)
you will be helping to finance our Road to Oprah tour, which commences
on September 19th. We need all kinds of help, and we very well may be
coming to a town near you, so please visit the Road to Oprah website
and check out the tour route and other fun ways you can help out: http://www.roadtooprah.com
May your pockets be heavy and your heart be light!
Now I'm home, grabbing a shower, putting on my country-girl skirt and
heading back to Sycamore Park for the Big Gig at 5:20, sandwiched in
between Ollin and Quetzal. Good Times!
Hope to see some familiar faces there! In the mean time, please head over and check out the 1 Second Film website and get ready for our Road to Oprah fundraiser at Mr T's Bowl on June 23rd!
Cybernet Expo is pleased to announce that the Evangenitals ( http://www.evangenitals.com/ ) have agreed to perform live at this year's show. The band is sponsored by AEBN ( http://www.aebn.net
) and will perform exclusively for Cybernet Expo attendees on Saturday
evening, June 9th, at 6:30pm at the Hilton Westshore in Tampa Bay.
With a sound that the band describes as "hillbilly love punk
alternative country psychedelic healthy hippie dirty rock revolution,"
or as one fan describes as "like the Dixie Chicks being beaten with
their own guitars at the playful hands of the Violent Femmes," the
Evangenitals have a loyal following in the Southern California music
scene. They have already released the collection "We Are the
Evangenitals," and a second LP is scheduled for release in the summer
of 2007.
"The Evangenitals (aka The Love Punks) were once a fictitious band - a
fib on a phony website born to amuse its founders and maybe a few
friends," explains the band's website. "On a whim, Juli Crockett, Lisa
Dee, and Brett Lyda - who all worked at the same sex toy company in
L.A. (like the Sex Pistols) - brought the ghost to life and debuted a
handful of `hillbilly truck-stop lullabies' for Arlo's open mic night
at the legendary Mr T's Bowl in Highland Park."
Juli Crockett, the lead vocalist and principle songwriter for the band, is also the Marketing Director at http://www.Stockroom.com
, which sells sex toys and bondage gear through its website and
catalog. Cybernet Expo will mark the first time that the band has
played for an adult industry audience.
"The Evangenitals have played at wildly diverse venues – at weddings,
funerals, churches, outdoor family festivals, political fundraisers,
you name it – and every event and venue is different," says Crockett.
"This will be our first adult industry bash, and we're not quite sure
what to expect."
Stockroom.com, along with AEBN, will be sponsoring the Saturday evening
performance, and Stockroom.com will also be participating in Cybernet
Expo's popular "Show n' Sell" marketing event.
"We love AEBN," says Crockett. "This will be the second time they have
sponsored an event with the Evangenitals and we are thrilled that they
are sponsoring the Evangenitals once more."
Crockett is also a former boxer, and is rumored to be the inspiration
for Hilary Swank's character in the Oscar-winning film Million Dollar
Baby. Her boxing career ended early due to injury.
The Evangenitals also feature Lisa Dee, Brett Lyda, Geoff Brandin, and George Bernardo. So what about their sound?
"Many people have reported that no matter how much someone tries to
explain the Evangenital experience to them, they are always totally
surprised by the way it actually sounds," explains Crockett. "Very
difficult to categories, we comfortably straddle the genres of Folk,
Americana, Southern Rock, Alt Country, Indie Pop, and Psychedelic Funk."
Attendance at the Evangenitals performance is free, but will require a
Cybernet Expo attendee badge. Advance registration for Cybernet Expo,
along with its reduced registration rates, will end on May 26th.
Additionally, hotel rooms for Cybernet Expo are almost sold out, but
rooms are still available at the Hilton Westshore for the reasonable
rate of $139 per night. Hotel rooms must be booked through the
CybernetExpo.com website; anyone attempting to register directly with
the Hilton Westshore will be told that the rooms are all sold out.
Cybernet Expo, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is
dedicated exclusively to the adult Internet business. The show offers
seminars for online adult business owners, plus parties and networking
events, and an opportunity to make new industry contacts. For more
information about attending Cybernet Expo, please visit http://www.cybernetexpo.com/
On Tuesday May 15th The Evangenitals went down to the Time Warner
studio in Glendale to do a television appearance in support of the
upcoming Lummis Day Festival in Highland Park on June 3rd.
The
show is going to air on May 31st at 7pm on the Time Warner Channel, so
you'll have to wait to see us in action. However, Patrick Ian Moore,
resident flier designer and videographer snapped some cool pictures that we've got on the Evangenitals website right now!
Hiya, EvanJunkies!
We need your help; or rather your body. :-)
If you be in the Greater Los Angeles area this Saturday night, the Evangenitals
would offer
you our eternal thanks and many a good character reference for years to come if
you
would come to see us perform our musical magic at Molly Malones at 11pm.
You see, this show is what is called a "great opportunity" in that "business"
called
"showbizzness".
The booker at Molly Malones also books for a bunch of other clubs on the western
side of
Hollywoodland, and this is our first and last chance to make a first impression.
It seems when a band ventures over to Hollywoodland, the band must "draw" at
least 20
people in order to not be considered a "catastrophe" by the club owners.
30 people is considered "good". 42 would make us the Lords of Hollywood for a
day. 55
would make the stars change their course. 63 and I name my firstborn after the
best
dancer on the floor. You see where this is going?
We need you to be there. It's a cool venue, there's other great bands playing,
it'll make us
famous quicker, and it's only $6.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Evangenitals, whose witty and highly original
alt-country hillbilly rock sound has attracted a loyal following in the
So Cal club scene, will join the eclectic lineup of musical performers
at the June 3 Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast L.A.
The band, which played its first gigs at Highland Park's Mr. T's Bowl,
will perform on the Sousa-Hiner bandshell at Sycamore Grove Park (4900
N. Figueroa Street) along with top east side ensembles Quetzal, Ollin
and the Susie Hansen Latin Band.
The Evangenitals recorded their first indie collection, "We Are The
Evangenitals" in 2005. Their sound has been described by Musician
Magazine as "..like the Dixie Chicks being beaten with their own guitars
at the playful hands of the Violent Femmes."
The band's sophomore CD will be released in the summer of 2007.
The Evangenitals are Juli Crockett, principal songwriter, on kid guitar,
lead vocals and kazoo; Lisa Dee on nylon guitar, harmonies and heavy
breathing; Brett Lyda on lead guitar, lap steel, Casio and vocals;
George Bernardo on drums, shakers, ooohs and ahhhs; and Jason Chesney on
bass, guitar and pots and pans. The group is frequently augmented by
Brian Landers on pedal steel and electric banjo; Dave "Salad" Salardino
on mandolin, ukulele and banjo; and Zoe Moss on accordion.
Admission to all Lummis Day events--at Lummis Home and Sycamore Grove
Park--is free. The Festival, a celebration of the city's diverse culture
and rich history, will be presented by Occidental College and will begin
with an 11:00 am poetry reading at Lummis Home and will continue at
12:30 pm in Sycamore Grove Park, where music, dance performances,
puppetry, art exhibitions and food service will continue through 7:00
pm.
A broad cross-section of the city's cultural traditions will be
represented at the community-building event.
Lummis Day takes its name from Charles Fletcher Lummis, who joined the
L.A. Times as the paper's first city editor in 1876. Lummis was also
one of the city's first librarians, founded the Southwest Museum and
helped introduce the concept of multi-culturalism to Southern
California.
Lummis Day: The Festival of Northeast Los Angeles is presented by
Occidental College and sponsored by the Arroyo Seco Neighborhood
Council, the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council, the Glassell
Park Neighborhood Council, the Greater Cypress Park Neighborhood
Council, the Eagle Rock Neighborhood Council, the Autry Center for the
American West, public radio station KPFK 90.7, Time Warner Cable, the
Arroyo Seco Journal and the Boulevard Sentinel with the support of the
North Figueroa Association, Los Angeles City Council Districts 1 and 14,
SIPA (Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, the Department of Recreation
and Parks, the Historical Society of Southern California, Heritage
Square Museum, the MTA, the Highland Park Heritage Trust, the Arroyo
Arts Collective, the L.A. Poetry Festival, Rock Rose Productons,
Orchestrada Audio and other community organizations.

I know what you're thinking... we must be CRAZY to play a show the same weekend as Coachella.
Well, if you're anything like me, the idea of a bunch of sweaty people out in the desert listening to a zillion bands (awesome though some may be) in a row is kind of horrific... unless you're one of the bands and/or have some sort of backstage pass, unlimited cold waters, and some "personal space" in your contract.
If, however, the shin dig going down at Coachella this weekend is your earthly version of Paradise, then I hope you have tickets and have a ball. Heck, if you didn't have tickets and I had some, I'd send 'em your way! Seriously, I would.
Now, if you're looking for a much more reasonably-priced music fest INDOORS (with an outdoor patio option) then I would highly suggest coming to the Old Towne Pub in Old Towne Pasadena for the Evangenitals show this Saturday night, April 28th.
We have assembled the Unofficial Highland Park All Stars to take your mind off of all that Coachella madness, and to give it to you big and lovely, right in the eardrums.
The Balloon Bass-driven duo UNPOPABLE will kick off the evenings offerings at 9pm, followed by Cat Hair Ensemble (9:30), the Evangenitals (10:30), and the breakups (11:30).
(Don't let the lower-case letters fool you... the breakups will eat your hearts out with a musical spoon, and then sew it up with sonic rose petals and put it back in your chest with a skip in its beat box)
It's a damn fine evening, and it's just $5.
There are rumors of Evangenitals playing other Evangenitals' instruments, Brett on the mic, Julio on the Bass, Lisa on a Tambourine, Georgie out of his Mind, NEW SONGS, and some dude from the LA Weekly being there who used to be in the Jim Carrol Band. NO KIDDING!!!
Remember, at the Old Towne Pub, the band you come to see gets to keep ALL the door money your bring, so be sure to give credit to the door man, and you can feel good about the fact that EVERY Evangenitals show at the Old Towne Pub is a bonafide fundraiser.
Just think, if you come to enough Old Towne Pub shows, we'll probably give you a credit on the new album!
So please come, and rock those Coachello/desert envy blues away. We've got you covered.
To Review: Saturday April 28th 9pm - 12am (Evangenitals at 10:30ish) Old Towne Pub 66 N Fair Oaks Ave Pasadena, CA 91103
**
For those who can't be with us, we would like to offer the following treats and suggestions for some simple things you can do to support your Genitals:
We Love You, Always and Already. Juli, Lisa, Brettsky, Georgie, Chesney, and all those who came before and keep coming back.My The Evangenitals http://www.evangenitals.com
That's right... it has been CONFIRMED that Julio is going to wear a floor-length dress and rhinestone-studded fake eyelashes TONIGHT at The Bordello Show!
Don't miss this once in a lifetime experience to see Julio dressed like a lady! :-)
Lisa Dee, always the lady, is wearing rhinestones, heels and fake hair, folks. FAKE HAIR!!!!
This is going to be a swank spectacle and I hope you're there to see it!
We're also debuting the NEW Evangenitals T-shirt, with artwork by Patrick Ian Moore, aka The Reverend Ptryxxx, and a FREE EvangeniTales comic, featuring Jeff Jones!
All that goodness for just $5. Best deal in town, guaranteed.
The Evangenitals hit the stage at 10pm, and you won't want to miss the opening number. It's sure to be weirdly sexy and sexily weird.
For those of you who are sick, injured, busy, or far away: Check out this video of the Evangenitals in our first Radio Interview! Just added on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK-YQVaRZMc Don't forget to show us some love with the stars and comments. :-)
Evangenital lead singer Miss Julio Crockett was spotted exiting Aardvarks in Hollywood last weekend with a floor length red gown. Witnesses at the scene reported that allegedly she was overheard saying to her "tall male companion" that the dress was for "some show " she is playing in March at "some swank ass joint ". More reports coming soon.
Just for the record, I am an Evangenital and always will be.
And so... let me say how weirdly enjoyable it was being in the audience as a
civilian Genital. I had wondered for days what would it be like if I could get
off work early and catch the show. As it turned out, I managed to catch the full
performance and I really enjoyed myself. The running gag in the band, I've been
told, is that I'm now referred to as "coach" during rehearsal and that the goal
was to make coach proud. Funny thing is, that's not the first time I've been
called that (here's hoping it's a term of endearment this time).
The full band (minus me) appeared onstage with part-timers Dave Salardino
(mandolin) and Jason Chesney on guitar. Everyone was standing, including Juli
and Lisa (w/ guitars) and I must say they all looked great. Juli started up with
some jokes and banter about me
gettin' fired and opened with the Ween cover "Cold Blows The Wind" followed by
"Lisa's Song" and "Never Again". Three interesting choices. My first thought was
it seemed overly ambitious given the limits of rehearsal time available to the
band pre-show (especially
Ween) but I also knew The Girls were eager to revisit a few old chestnuts we
hadn't championed in a long awhile. Ultimately, I gave in to the performances,
thanks mostly to the fine vocal performances. Next up was, I think, "Quee Queg".
This full band version definitely had legs and it was good to hear after all
these months (drums!). "Hello" featured some nice guitarwork from Chesney. I
missed my own presence most on "Drunk That Way" but when the set segued into
"Irene" the band unexpectedly reclaimed what I thought was my own brand of
special mountain magick. "Diggin It" was still good times though even sloppier
than ever. The second heavyweight moment was "Fuck Em All". The band really
finessed that song and I was definitely taking notes. George and Salad get extra
points on FEA for the tasty flavors. "Sun Is Shining" (a song that we've always
struggled with live) communicated, especially during the verses and managed to
muster a
healthy dose of applause. Last up was "Gasoline" (surprise!). This song was
pretty faithful to the original and still carried plenty of energy. It was the
right song to close with.
All in all, it was a good night. The band, of course, still had plenty of
charisma and delivered an inspired performance. I had a blast. It was great fun
and enlightening to hear the songs shimmy and sway, to hear which licks and
ideas stayed and which were either reinterpreted or discarded entirely. In the
end, I'm pleased to report that I loved it all and I still missed me very much.
- Brettsky
The online band based comic is coming soon. It will feature awesome
characters having crazy adventures. It's going to be cool! The most
recent flier is the tiniest taste. Be ready, it will rock!
Alright... so I'm a geek. But dammit, I get friggin' giddy as hell when
a famous author whose work I respect the hell out of drops my name, and
the Evangenitals name, as a band that he loves to get crazy to.
Check it out:
"For
pure craziness, there are lots of other bands, including one that I
can't write to but I've become a big fan; they're called the
Evangenitals. They're from Los Angeles. One of the front singers is a
former boxer-slash-philosopher. She's a fantastic singer. Her name is
Juli Crockett."
Thank you, Colum McCann!
So, the back story to our association is that Colum was actually one of my professors my first year at The European Graduate School
in Switzerland where I go every summer to work on my PhD in Philosophy.
We had many deep conversations and stayed up late singing Evangenitals'
songs and Irish classics with the hoodlums at the best damn theory camp
in the Alps.
I even wrote a song about him, that a bunch of us
geeks got together and hootenannied often. I'm trying to find a video
of it that someone once sent me so I can post it. I know there's an
audio recordin (bad quality) and I may throw it up online somewhere for
the hell of it.
In the meantime, we may just have to revive the
song and play it at the next Evangenitals show. It's a damn fine sing
along, in the Irish tradition. February 11th - All Star Lanes - Bowling, Drinking, Evangenitals, Sing Alongs, Karoke. Be there.

That is AWESOME! I've been waiting for the right moment to start a
Wikipedia page for the Genitals. Technically WE, as the band, are not
supposed to start a page, and it is something to be left to THE PEOPLE
at large, signifying that we are IMPORTANT enough to be listed in the
open-encyclopedia of the people.
Perhaps the time hath finally come! :-)
It
was Friday Night at the Old Towne Pub and the Evangenitals decided to
see what would happen if one was to put Dion & the Belmonts'
Runaround Sue, Bad Company's Feel Like Makin' Love, Velvet
Underground's Heroin, and The Beatles' Hey Jude together into one tasty
dish.
This video, shot by Patrick Ian Moore, displays the
results in a rigorously honest single shot. The real stars of this
video are in the crowd. God bless the Old Towne Pub and those who haunt
its wooden barstools.
At Eliot & Jain Sekular's annual Christmas party on Christmas Eve, Lisa Deedle and I were asked to play some music, as we are asked to do at every Sekular-house party. It pretty much just isn't Christmas if we don't play their legendary Christmas party, which features the most amazing tamales ever cooked by human hands.
Lisa and I were taking requests from the party-going crowd, and we ended up playing a nice little acoustic set of
Evangenitals and Evangina tunes... mostly sing-along/play-along's like Home, Diggin' It, Not Quiet There, Sun is Shining. The final request for the evening, however, was
Hey Ya.
Back in 2004, during Grammy night, we were half having band practice in preparation for the open mic at Mr T's Bowl while half watch the Grammys. Outkast was on, performing their hit song, when
Brettsky began to chunk it out on guitar. We all began playing and singing, and it was revealed that I,
Juli Crockett, happened to know ALL of the lyrics to that catchy-ass tune.
A series of "double dog dares" were issued, as to whether or not we had the balls to play the tune at the open mic that night. As you might imagine, when it comes to the Evangenitals, we are never short on balls. ;-)
Then something miraculous happened. I started playing the song at about 1/18th the normal speed, and soulfully singing Andre's surprisingly heartbreaking and passionate lyrics. An instant classic was born.
We performed BOTH versions, fast and slow, at a show at El Cid in the summer of 2004. That show was recorded by our dear friend Joey Ninja (from
Ninja Academy) and the slow version is currently our most downloaded tune on iTunes. That is the genesis of the Evangenitals version of Hey Ya, loving called...
"Hey Ya'll"
Why am I telling you all this? Well, because I just discovered another gent who is singing the tune in the slow and low tempo, and at this moment in time, he's a lot more popular than we are. Perhaps I'm feeling the need to assert my turf? A little tinge of cover-song envy? I don't know. Maybe this is the proverbial Tipping Point for the Evangenitals. The moment when a million people start searching for "that awesome cover version of Hey Ya" and instead of finding
Matt Weddle of Obadiah Parker, they find the Evangenitals.
Miracles do happen. And I have a feeling that 2007 is going to be the year of the Genitals. Can you feel it?
So, long story short, after seeing all the hub-bub going on surrounding the Matt Weddle version, I laid down on track with some moving action titles telling a little bit of the Evangenitals tale, and I loaded it on You Tube as a video response.

Night Vision pics of the WHOLE band... including Geof Brandin on the
bass and Bryan Landers guest starring on the electric banjo... are
available for viewing in the Evangenitals Image Gallery!
This picture set was taken by the Rev. P-TryXXX, our resident flier artist and videographer, who you may have seen at the last batch of shows. Heck, he may have even interviewed you!
The
video from the last Old Towne Pub show will be coming soon. It's
currently in the editing haus (which means Brett, our editor supreme,
is tinkering away with it) and I can tell you that it's going to be
great. There are so many choice bits and cameos, it's just plain
awesome. If you were there, you are in the video... guaranteed. Ptryxxx
did a fine job of making sure that EVERYONE was counted, on film. :-)
In the meantime, you can can look at our lovely faces in Night Vision over in the Image Galleries
(okay, I'll admit our lovely faces look kinda scary in Night Vision,
but man are we ready to star in a musical Vampire flick!) and/or you
can head over to YouTube to check out all the Evangenitals videos that are already there, longing for more comments and attention from loving eyes like yours.
Such lovely, lovely eyes you have.
(All the better to come see the first show of 2007 with, my dears)
Tonight, Friday December 15th, We the Evangenitals will be playing our last show of 2006 at the Old Towne Pub in Pasadena.
I would very much like you to be there, if you can. There are many reasons for this. I will list them, and you can pick whichever you like, put it in your pocket, and come see the show.
1. This is the last Evangenitals show of '06. (see explanation above)
2. The last show was so friggin' dope, and this one is gonna be even better. Need proof? Watch this video from the last show. If you were AT the last show (Kent, Leslie, Sharon, Alan, Joseph, Eliot etc) you may find yourself IN the video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xdZjSq-ydA
3. This is a fundraiser for our next album. In January we will be hitting the studio to lay down tracks for all your new, favorite songs that weren't on the first album. Like Fuck 'em All. So if you have wanted a recording of Fuck 'em All, come to the show, and we will be able to make you one in January. We need $600 to pull this off, and all proceed from the show go toward the new album.
4. Because we love you. We really do. Always have, always will. Seriously.
5. The "Super-Deluxe Medley of Cover Songs". I'm not kidding. This medley will blow your mind, and you can only hear it live, this time, while we've got the Holiday Balls to go through with it.
6. We (10:15pm) are playing with the Natural Disasters (9:30pm) and the Purple Gang (11:15pm) which means we have the musical spectrum covered, from punk rock to blues to hillbilly soul to psychedelic rock to 50's doo wop. We got it. Come n' get it.
7. There will be press coverage, celebrity photographs, and we need your sexy faces to come make us look good. Video interviews. Paparazzi, baby. This is Hollywoodland. Put your face on and be seen.
If none of these reasons prove sufficient to encourage your presence at this epic show, (or if you happen to be in another state, which is a decent excuse) please at a minimum send us your good, supportive thoughts and prayers.
Now, I'm not one to usually go for the hard sell, as I'm a much bigger fan of soft candy. HOWEVER, when the situation so requires, I am willing to pull out the bells and whistles and do a little tap dance for "the cause" so... here we go!
This Friday Night, November 17th at Old Towne Pub (formerly the Loch Ness) the Evangenitals are pullin' out the stops (that means No-Holds-Barred Evangenital Action) at 10pm. And you can be a part of it for just $5.
That's right, we're Getting Naked (spiritually speaking), lettin' down our hair, trying some new things, re-visioning some old, and celebrating drummer GEORGE BERNARDO's Birthday. And friggin' Ninja Academy is playing with us. That's awesome!
The Evangenitals, for this show, will consist of Juli Crockett, Brett Lyda, Lisa Dee, and George Bernardo, as usual, with Geof Brandin on the bass and Bryan Landers giving it to you good on the Pedal Steel and Electric Banjo. I'd say it's worth seeing all that squeezed onto the small stage of the Old Towne Pub.
Did I mention that it's only $5 (that's FIVE DOLLARS. 500 pennies. Only 20 quarters. you see what I'm saying?)
The Full Line Up: 9pm Marty West and the Lower Companions 10pm The Evangenitals(tm) 11pm Ninja Academy 12pm SPECIAL SECRET SHOW. We ain't tellin'. You just gotta be there to see it.
In other news, have you ever found yourself asking who are the Evangenitals REALLY are? Off the stage... out of the bright lights of dingy bars? Well NOW YOU CAN SEE FOR YOURSELF!
