The Sugar Valley Philharmonic, a large, improv orchestra that runs
relay races, is seeking musicians for its debut in the arts-focused,
interactive section of the Castro Street Fair (slightly to the left
and off the beaten path from the main festival).

This is the second incarnation of the musical performance model from
Sugar Valley 2005 where 'Lude the Narcotics-Addicted Clown played
over a dozen (lu)duets with local creative improvisors in exchange
for eleven motrin, two xanax, several greyhounds and a crumpled
dollar bill (http://www.zoka.com/lude). OK. Maybe 'Lude just "found"
the dollar bill. At any rate, and happily, the Sugar Valley Artists
Collective (http://www.sugarvalley.org) agreed to permit the project
to expand in 2006.

So. Equal parts insanity, Portsmouth Sinfonia, creative improv,
Immersion Composition Society and clown shoes, the philharmonic will
convene to perform in small and large groups throughout the day,
recruiting passers-by as needed.

The philharmonic is looking for:

* acoustic instruments and the musicians who play them
(battery-powered amplification is permitted to a boom-box level only)
- this includes all instrumental families of the orchestra as well as
experimental instruments and toys

* a minimum two-hour commitment starting at 11am and ending at 6pm
(experience tells us it's usually 5pm); longer shifts are encouraged

You'll need a music stand for any conventional and graphic scores,
but playing by ear is perfectly fine.

As much as possible, scores and mp3s of material will be sent in
advance of the performance day. No rehearsal will be scheduled.

People do dress up, or down, at the Castro Street Fair but Sugar
Valley has its own aesthetic of individual self-expression. Formal
attire is suitable, of course, but come as you are.

Call for Participation: Duck and Cover 2 at 21 Grand

What Is This Duck and Cover?
  Duck and Cover will be an evening (maybe two or
three) of radical reinterpretations of popular songs
performed/reformed/deformed by musicians,
performance artists, dancers, and the like to take
place Halloween weekend at 21 Grand in Oakland. (Dates
haven¹t been solidified yet.) Hopefully, there will be
an audience, and participants will be paid.

Why A Night of Covers?
  This show came out of a discussion about audiences
for experimental music and issues of ³relevance² of
experimental music performances to the general public.
It is also in response to the resurgence of pablum pop
(a la Brittney Spears), the resurgence of intellectual
property issues, and the show, ³American Idol,² where
talent is judged based partly on one¹s ability
to perform a relatively faithful rendition of someone
else¹s material. Unlike the previously mentioned
televisual endeavor, we aim to present unfaithful
renditions that deconstruct the song, work with it in
an unconventional way, or use it as a leaping off
point to do something more interesting. Besides, it
just sounded like fun.

Are there Criteria?
  The premise is to take songs or pieces of music with
which a general audience is likely to be familiar and
then perform it in an unconventional way, whether
through sampling/digital processing, interpreting it
via another art form, improvising upon themes or
patterns of the music, or doing a relatively straight
rendition using radically different instrumentation.

  A maximum of 20 minutes will be alloted to each
selected performer/group, therefore you could
conceivably cover multiple songs.

  If you are doing a more or less ³straight² cover, no
more than half of the instruments (including voice)
commonly associated with said song can be used. For
example, if you were to cover a conventional rock
song, (vocals/guitar/bass/drums) you could use at most
two of these instruments. You could choose vocals and
guitar, but it would be more interesting with trumpet,
tone generator and theremin.

How do I communicate my desire to participate in this
event? You can e-mail 21grand@... with your
name, contact info, and a description of what you
would do, including which song(s) or music you would
do it to. It could be a bit vague (e.g. butoh dance to
Black Sabbath; duet for tuba and laptop of Broadway showtunes).

these around the world (it started in Paris), and people from around

Palais Idéal: A Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music
Chico, CA—Oct. 19-22, 2006


Le Palais Idéal: The Ideal Castle

Ferdinand Cheval was a postman from Hauterives, France who, one day
in 1879 while walking his route, tripped on a strange looking stone.
The stone intrigued him so he picked it up and put it in his pocket.
Cheval returned the following day to collect more of the curious
rocks, and he just never stopped. For the next 33 years he collected
small and large stones from along his postal route and used them
with cement and lime to build an ornate and surreal castle that he
had daydreamed about on those long walks delivering the mail. Cheval
had no experience building or sculpting and his neighbors quickly
labeled him insane, yet he stuck to his vision and—working alone for
those 33 years—completed his "fairy-like palace beyond imagination":
Le Palais Idéal.

Another dream: A large collection of musical oddballs and innovators
gather together in the sleepy college town of Chico, Calif. and take
the place over for a few days under the banner of Palais Idéal: A
Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music. This isn't
merely an experimental music festival; this is a call for weirdness
of all stripes and for braveness in the name of new ideas. It goes
down all over town Oct. 19-22, and most anything goes: art rock,
experimental music, free jazz, noise, improv, outsider art,
visionary music, sound art, field recordings, electronica, ambient,
broken folk, homemade instruments, lowercase, multi-media,
performance art, visual music, adventurous rock, post rock,
conceptual music, song poems and the rest…

There won't be any monetary guarantees for this first installment of
Palais Idéal. But we will guarantee performers a place to stay (in
the home of one of our volunteers), a pass to all the shows, and if
logistics can be worked out, audio and video recordings of each
performance will be made available to performers after the fest.
After we pay for the posters and the soundpersons we'll split
whatever dough is left evenly between all of the acts.

This festival will be happening in the midst of Artoberfest, which
is an effort by the city and local arts organizations to make the
month of October into a power-packed festival of arts that will
showcase Chico as a desirable arts destination. My hope is to build
a fun and highly visible castle that will function as the
unpredictable irregular heartbeat of the month's festivities. And
maybe, during this time when the city is focused on local arts
programming, this unique event will inspire them to help support
Palais Idéal in the future.

With even the smallest amount of additional backing, sustaining (and
expanding) an annual festival of adventurous, strange and visionary
music becomes a real possibility—which makes this dream not so crazy-
sounding.

A friend of mine, the avant-rapper Bizzart is coming to town for a 21 Grand
show on July 21. For part of his set, I'm hoping to assemble a backup band
of local improvers. Ideally, we'd come up with a couple of song frameworks
rock-lotto style for him to freestyle to. (IE: have 1 or 2 practice sessions
to create loose frameworks.)

I'm looking for someone who is not averse to playing 4/4 hip hop beats for
this set. Of course, you'd be encouraged to work in some prepared drum
sounds or other unusual ideas into that frame work, but he should have
something to rap to. It doesn't *always* have to be snare on 2 and 4, but
there should be a sense of flow. These must be live drums - no programs! Any
takers?

               THE 6th ANNUAL TRANSBAY SKRONKATHON BBQ

ACME Observatory and the Transbay Calendar are at it again.  We're putting
on an all-day creative music and BBQ marathon at the 21 Grand gallery
in Oakland, CA, on Sunday, August 6, 2006, with wall-to-wall music inside
the gallery, hot grills and cold drinks in the alleyway outside.

As usual it's a free event.  We'll take donations for the benefit of
the Transbay Creative Music Calendar, but we have no budget pay anybody.

The Skronkathon is always a great day of hanging out with a whole lot
of interesting, intelligent people like you, combined with a mess of
extremely attractive music like yours.  And of course, the day is
always a perfect sunny summer Sunday.

So, we're looking for volunteers to play (and volunteers to help out,
see below.)  If you make music that defies labels, breaks categories,
confounds expectations, raises eyebrows, provokes debate or otherwise
comes from left field (or outer space!), we want to hear from you.

If you are interested in performing please email td@... and include
the following information:

    + group and performers name
    + description of your music
    + how long you'd like to play for (minimum and maximum, please.)
    + range of preferred start times.

We want to present as many performers as possible, so please don't
propose playing in more than one group during the BBQ.

Although there is a PA, there will be minimal setup time, so please
keep in mind sound check will be "on the fly".  It is a small space --
"unplugged" is an option to seriously consider...

Once we get an idea of the submissions, we'll try to put together a
logical schedule...

I had lined up cancelled and I need to find a replacement immediately. The
project is for two cellos, twenty-four televisions, and electronics. You'll

Hello,

We had a last minute cancellation of the band that was to perform at our art
opening/reception on Friday May 5th sometime around 10p.

If you know of a small-ish single, dou or trio (small stage area) that could
play a set, let us know.

It is a very casual reception and we like the cienematic, experimental stuff
with vocals the best - but we are completely open to whatever talents you
can provide.

We have a small but adequate PA (2 mics, mixer and 15" loudspeakers) can pay
some $$$ and definately treat you well (drinks and glory) but it is an art
reception and we arent charging a cover, so I wouldn't expect Bill Grahm
Presents.

Thingamajigs.org offers a call for proposals from
artists/composers for the 9th annual Music for People
and Thingamajigs festival held in Oakland, California
on Saturday, June 24, 2006 at the 21 Grand Gallery and
Performance Space.

Thingamajigs.org is an organization working to:

1) promote the creation of new musical instruments and
tuning systems

2) showcase artists working in this medium, and give
such artists a forum for  showing their work

similar aged (~20 y.o.) electromusician for duo projects. Preferred styles

Ok, here we go again, inspired by Gino Robair's "I Norton" show at 21 Grand,
I'm putting together another "Conduction" show.

This one will be on Sunday, April 23rd, and will feature guided
improvisations and/or compositions by:  Cheryl Leonard, Matt Ingalls, Tom
Duff and a 4th conductor who I'm waiting for a confirmation from.

Now we need to build the orchestra. We're looking for folks on a wide
variety of instruments including strings, brass, percussion, voice,
electronics, and "other". Ability to read standard notation is not required,
but it will be helpful to know who can. It's more important to be able to
improvise under specific sets of instructions, and pay attention to the
conductor while playing. Please be prepared to bring a music stand, and your
own amplification if it's needed. We will have at least one practice session
on the afternoon of the show, and we'll try to schedule one in the
preceeding week as well. Participating musicians should plan to take part in
at least 1 practice set.

If you're interested in participating, please let me know. Don't forget to
include your email & instrument (in case I don't know).

in L.A

“Legendary maximum minimalist” composer / guitarist Glenn Branca still needs
guitar players for his show at the Disney concert hall downtown. Interested

This would be for the upcoming performance of “Symphony No.13 (Hallucination
City)” for 80 guitars, 20 basses and drums. The original version premiered
at the former WTC on June 13, 2001. The revised version, in four movements,
premiered at the Kasser Theater at Montclair State University, NJ on
February 4, 2006.

The venue will be Walt Disney Concert Hall, 111 South Grand Avenue, Los
Angeles. The show is part of Minimalist Jukebox, a series being programed by
John Adams and sponsored by the LA Philharmonic. For more info go to:

The dates are March 27th and 28th, with the performance on the 29th. The
rehearsals will be the 27th and 28th, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on both days. They
are tentatively scheduled at Center Staging in Burbank, 3407 Winona Avenue.
Musicians will be reimbursed for parking. On the day of the concert at
Disney Hall the rehearsal/sound check will be 3-6:30 p.m. with the
performance at 8 p.m.. Food and drink will be provided on all days. Each
musician will need to know his / her part (but you don’t need to memorize
it). You’ll need to bring a guitar and amp (a medium sized amp would be
best). It will also be necessary to restring your guitar for the tuning.
Basses will not need to be restrung OR retuned. I will have a serious
quantity of replacement strings on hand.

“The parts are in staff notation and the ability to follow a part measure by
measure is essential. The playing technique includes plenty of
double-strumming and downstroke chording. Complete detailed instructions
will come with the parts which will be sent before the end of February. I
will answer any questions you have about the parts when you get them. The
show will be conducted by John Myers. If you want to do the gig you must
e-mail your postal mailing address and telephone number (please note whether
you play BASS or GUITAR).

If you played in the Montclair performance you will still need to confirm
and get some
new parts. In the 1st movement, there will be minor changes in the bass
parts only. The 2nd movement will have a number of changes for all. The 3rd
will have no changes and the 4th will be extended at the end, but otherwise
no changes. You will still play in the same section with the same tuning.

It is not possible to pay this number of people. So, you’ll have to do the
gig for free.
