Hi all-

I still have space in my curated set at the Ivy Room Experimental Improv
Hootenany next Monday (11/16). In particular, I would like have a string player
and/or percussionist. This is a purely improvisation set, no rehearsals, but I
will send out some guidelines in advance.

I will be performing laptop/synthesizer/small percussion, and Drew Ceccato
will be sitting in with his Electronic Valve Instrument and other electronics.

The performance will be at 9PM at the Ivy Room, 858 San Pablo Ave, Albany.

Please let me know if you are interested by tomorrow (Thursday) evening.

   Thanks
   -Amar

An electro-acoustic band called Reconnaissance Fly, consisting
presently of flutist/bass flutist/spoken wordist/singer/frontwoman
Polly Moller (me), pianist/electronics wizard Amar Chaudhary,
and bassist Tim Walters, seeks two more members to make the band a quintet.

We're currently working on a communally composed, long-form,
multi-movement "spong cycle" entitled Flower Futures. It will be
performed live (a lot, we hope) and recorded to be our first CD
released on Edgetone Records.

Candidate must-have traits:

- Electric guitar player
- Drummer with a kit
- Team player
- Enthusiastic about writing pieces and improv frameworks in support of spoetry
- Drummer likes to keep time as well as freely improvise

Very desirable traits:

- guitarist creative with pedals, looping, etc.
- drummer creative with objects, toys, etc.
- both candidates not in 10 other bands already

Desirable traits:

- Won't bring pineapple pizza to rehearsal
- Won't laugh when the frontwoman bends over

If you are interested, please write back to me off the list.
Thanks!

Cheers,
Polly Moller

Seeking performers/composers for:
The Pmocatat (prerecorded music onto cds and tapes and things) Ensemble and Chorus

Thursday, December 10th, 9pm
Luggage Store Gallery
San Francisco

1 Practice required (Probably Saturday, December 5th in the afternoon)

The rules:

Instead of bringing your instrument, bring recordings of yourself playing one or more "real" acoustic instruments. The recordings can be on record, tape, cd, or a portable device like Ipod (no laptops). We will perform loose compositions written by ensemble for this specific instrumentation.

Chorus?
I'd like a few of the compositions to include vocals, which will be pre-recorded in the same format as the instruments. (In other words, no live singing.)

The recordings should be mostly simple musical gestures, recorded with the intention of being mixed with the sounds of other instruments at the live show. You should be the performer of the instruments heard, but it doesn't have to be an instrument you're known for playing. You're welcome (and encouraged) to bring recordings of more than one instrument.

At the performance, you're encouraged to play your recorded media with the level of attention that you'd pay to a "real" instrument. You'll be using the play and pause buttons, fiddling with the volume, skipping ahead to certain sections of tracks, scratching the records, etc. We're NOT going to simply let the recordings play by themselves or on shuffle play. Regarding effects, they should be minimal - no samplers, loopers or laptops. I'd say just volume pedal, reverb and pitch bender allowed, and most frequently going "au natural". There may be one song where we use distortion.

Once I know who's participating and what instruments you're bringing recordings of, I'll probably split the show up between different instrument combinations, such as all acoustic guitars for one song, woodwinds for another, and sax/bass/drums for another.

Advice: CD and tape will probably be the easiest and most fun instruments. The better cd players have cue and reverse buttons that are separate from the "previous/next track" buttons. Multi-speed cassette recorders can be found at radio shack, best buy and a number of stores. Ipod sounds easy, but will probably be the least flexible instrument. (That is, unless iphones have some snazzy track manipulation software I don't know about.) CD-DJ players and such are ok.

Before you ask: No, you can't bring recordings on your laptop and play your laptop. The instruments you bring recordings of must be real, natural instruments. You also can't use the "ipiano" or other fake instruments on the iphone, unless they're modifying your instrumental source material. An LP must have your own solo instrumental material. Yes, I know that probably means nobody will be bringing LP.

To Participate

To sign up, send an email to mattdavignon@... that states

  * which form your media will be in (cd's, tapes, ipod, lp)
  * which instruments will be featured on your media (acoustic guitar, piano, drums, etc...)

and bookmark this space to view the running tally of who's participating and what they're doing.

Hi all,

I'm putting on another Droneshift concert. It will be a continuous 2 hour drone on Thursday,  November 19th from 8 to 10 pm at the Luggage Store. You can participate if you like.

I'm looking for 15-18 musicians.

The rules:
1) The concert is all drone music - very long notes, focusing on building complex, long-form sounds in collaboration with the other musicians. Slow attacks and slow decays are encouraged most of the time. Rather than thinking of your own note, think of what you're contributing to the "group note" at any given time. Melodies, solos, rhythms and "skronking" are forbidden.

2) Every musician must have some sort of stopwatch. Depending on how many musicians participate, I'll assign a total amount of time that each person can participate. (Last time, everyone could play up to 30 minutes. It was up to the musician to decide which 30 minutes to play. They could play a minute in the beginning and 29 minutes in the end, or 6 periods of 5 minutes, etc.) It's ok for an artist to play for less than the time limit.

3) The concert starts at 8:00 pm and ends at 10:00 pm. Music should be happening continuously for that entire time.

Some considerations:
A) The performance will contain some very loud sections and some very quiet sections. It should not continuously get louder and louder over the course of 2 hours.
B) Don't be afraid to go simple, or to play an instrument you're not known for playing. Plucked and percussive sounds will probably not work well. Wind instruments are ok, but plan to use full breaths for notes. I often think we could use more "pure sound" instruments in the mix.
C) There will be a lot of musicians setting up in a relatively small area, so please plan on having a small physical footprint.
D) I'd rather not use the PA if possible, since I think it will sound better if the sound comes out of more than 2 locations. Please plan to bring your own amplification. Your sound should come from your location.

If you're interested, please let me know. I'll need to know which instrument(s) you plan to play.

The Ivy Room Improv/Experimental Hootenanny series is looking for performers
collaborators for the next three Hoots on Sept 21, Oct 19 & Nov 23.

Each night has:
One Featured act (40 min) - self explanatory
Three Curators (30 min) - responsible for bringing/engaging artists in the room
to create whatever music they want

There is a small honorarium for the featured act, tip jar for the curators and
free drinks are available to all performers.

The idea behind the monthly Experimental/Improv Hootenany is to create a
seamless night of outside music in a cozy place with no cover charge where
musicians/artists can chill, chat, get a decent cocktail, listen to the music
and perhaps try out a new collaboration. While no particular music style is
preferred over the other, the emphasis is on improvisation, collaboration and
experimental music. It has been a gas to have different music scenes come
together to create some crazy noise - and also great that it has been so well
received, attended and appreciated - who knew?!

Please feel free to pass this on to other musicians. Thanks,

Lucio

A N N O U N C I N G
THE 9th ANNUAL TRANSBAY SKRONKATHON BBQ

After months of intensive negotiations, we've decided to run another
Skronkathon (the 9th!). It'll be at 21 Grand in Oakland like the last
few years and it'll be on Saturday July 11, 2009.

The Skronkathon is an all-day marathon of creative music and BBQ.
There'll be performances all day inside the gallery and hot grills &
cold drinks in the alleyway outside. We don't charge admission, so we
have no budget to pay anybody. It's more like a party than a gig.
(We do take donations for the benefit of the Transbay Creative Music
Calendar <http://transbaycalendar.org/>)

We're interested in new, challenging, unfamiliar, adventurous, engaging,
peculiar music of all kinds. We really mean all kinds: if you do
Throbbing Gristle covers using medieval instruments, or a Cappella
arrangements of Stockhausen pieces, or play prepared BBQ grills, we want
you on our program. (And if you don't do something silly-sounding, we
still want you -- just because I'm goofy doesn't mean you have to be.)

If you are interested in performing please please send a proposal to
td@..., including the following information:

   + group and performers names
   + contact email
+ a short (20-30 words?) description of what you do for our press packet
+ range of preferred start times between, say 1:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

We try to fit a lot of performers into not much time, so count on
playing for about 30 min.

Although there is a PA, there will be minimal setup time, so please
keep in mind sound check will be "on the fly". It is a small space --
"unplugged" is an option to seriously consider...

Once we get an idea of the submissions, we'll try to put together a
logical schedule...

    ***********************************************************
    * We also need volunteers to help out with minding *
    * the donation jar, running the PA, assisting people *
    * loading in and out and generally coordinating *
    * things. Please let us know if you can help!!!!! *
    ***********************************************************

                     Thanks for your interest,

where anyone who wants to improvise experimental music (except for
jerks) is welcome to show up with their gear, plug in, and improvise
with whoever else shows up. It's an opportunity for new musicians to
make connections, or for 'established' musicians to experiment with a
new instrument or setup. Like dude, whatever. All instruments &
non-instruments are welcome. Not restricted to dudes. Please RSVP with
Matt Davignon (mattdavignon@...), even if it's on the same day.

Details:
Load in time: If participating, please plan to arrive between 7 & 8pm,
and be set up/sound checked by 8. A trio (trumpet/guitar/computer)
will be playing at 9.

Address: the gallery is at 1007 Market Street, near 6th street. Next

Footprint: Taking up a small amount of stage space is encouraged.
Please don't bring every instrument in your home studio - it would
mean that everyone else has to suck in their breath and get all
skinny. (And the neighborhood isn't great for unloading gear anyway.)

Gallery equipment: Please bring your own power cables, power strips,
tables, etc. We have a PA system that takes XLR or 1/4" inputs. PA
does not have reference monitors. If you want to use the PA, please
bring long cables to reach it.

There will be two more Ivy Room Improv/Experimental Hootenanny events
this year. One on Mon Oct 27th and another on Mon Nov 24th.

I am looking to book one featured act (30-40 min set) and three
'curators' for 20 min. sets for each date.

The idea behind the monthly Experimental/Improv Hootenany is to create
a seamless night of outside music in a cozy place with no cover where
people can chill, chat, get a decent cocktail, listen to the music and
perhaps try out a collaboration. Several different music scenes will
come together to create some crazy noise and while no particular music
style is preferred over the other, the emphasis is on improvisation,
collaboration and experimental music.

Each curator is responsible for bringing or engaging artists in the
room to make whatever music they'd like during their 20 mins. It's fun
and sometimes gets pretty crazy.

There is a small honorarium in it for the featured act and drinks are
made available to all the performers by our man behind the bar, Mr.
Eric Leppo.

Please feel free to pass this on to other musicians. Thanks,

Lucio

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming show at the Luggage Store, which is a "Drone
Shift". Rather than having separate sets, the entire evening will be a
2 hour drone. The date is October 30th, from 8-10pm.

I'm looking for a total of 15-18 musicians, and I'm currently up to
12. Everyone will play for up to 30 minutes. In past incarnations, I
scheduled everyone's shift down to the 5 minute mark. This time I'm
macro-managing -everyone should bring some sort of stop watch. It's up
to you when you play, play 30 minutes in one sitting, or punch
yourself in/out with the stop watch.

So, looking for a few more people to play - but here's the important
part - IT'S DRONE MUSIC! The intention is to range from quiet
lowercase tones to overpowering Phill Niblock stuff. However skronky
showboating and squelchy harsh noise are not what I'm after. Don't
sign up for this one if you'll be bored playing the same note for
minutes at a time.

Please do plan to bring your own amplifier if you need one - I think
ensemble pieces work better when the sound is localized to the
musician.

Regarding the stopwatch, it's good if it's silent, but should be
quietish if not. I figure the occasional watch beep may be an
acceptable artifact. Kitchen timers are certainly too loud. Your
cellphone may have a stopwatch you can silence.

Interested in participating? Drop me a line, and tell me what
instrument you're playing.

Hello,

Looks like the Monday Sept. 15 Hoot at the Ivy Room in Albany is going
to be a....hoot.

There is *one more* 20 minute curate slot available if anyone wants
it. You curate a slot by deciding what happens/who plays in that slot
and you either bring people or grab 'em from the crowd.

The featured act is the quartet of Ross Hammond, John Hanes, Phillip
Greenlief and Lisa Mezzacappa. We've got a boat load of great people
curating slots and/or just showing up to hang or play (Mark Growden,
Laurie Amat, Mark Briggs, Herb Heinz, Craig Lotta, Jeff Hobbs, Michael
Zbyszynski, etc) and Lucifer Meltdown (me) will DJ some crazy outside
music between sets. There will be two 'after midnight' open slots that
will remain open to whatever happens. If last time was any indication,
those were really fun and wild.

As a reminder, we are purposefully bringing together a few different
scenes to create some crazy noise, so no one style of music is
preferred over the other, but the idea is improvisation, collaboration
and experimental music. One set from last time had a DJ, a guy
knocking out some crazy guitar/vocals, a sax and some drums/noise.
Reminded me of some kind of 6am Berlin bar scene from 'Wings of Desire.'

I'll be sending out another email to confirm details with curators.
Please feel free to forward this to others and/or contact me.

Thanks,

-lucio

Dear fellow musicians and improvisers,

After the smashing success of the first Improv Hootenany at the Ivy
Room in Albany, CA in July, it looks like we are on for a monthly series.

The idea is to to have a seamless night of outside music, hangout in a
cozy place with no cover, chill, listen to or try out some
collaborations/ideas and check out the a featured collaboration. The
Ivy is real cozy, roomy, has a decent sound sytem and our
compadre/bartender/musician Eric Leppo serves good drinks.

Monday, Sept 15 is the date for the next Improv Hootenany and we are
looking for improvisers and dj(s) to curate a 20 minute set each. We
would love to see some more brass and wind instruments!

The featured improvisation will be the trio of Ross Hammond, Phillip
Greenlief, John Hanes.

The response has been great so far. Please email me if you are
interested in curating at Sept/Oct & Nov hoots or just showing up.

Thanks and please pass this onto anyone you might be interested and
you might wanna hang/play with!

Hi all,

Thursday, Jul 17 2008 PM
8pm ad-hoc avant-garde improv hoedown
9pm Kris Tiner (LA)/Donald Robinson duo

For the first set this thursday at luggage store, we're having an
"open jam". Ad-hoc avant-garde improv hoedown is a set where anyone
who wants to improvise experimental music (except for jerks) is
welcome to show up with their gear, plug in, and improvise with
whoever else shows up. All instruments are welcome. RSVPing with Matt
Davignon (mattdavignon@...) is appreciated but not mandatory.

All instruments/experience levels welcome, but must be some sort of
experimental/avant-garde music. RSVPing with me is appreciated
(mattdavignon@... - I don't get the sbcglobal email anymore),
but not mandatory.

We have a PA, but for this sort of thing if bringing an amp is
convenient, it usually makes for better sound.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

2) About that radio playlist message

I let that radio playlist message go through because they accept cd
submissions from experimental musicians. If you're interested in
getting some airplay in Europe, please follow the directions in that
email.

I can't let the "playlist" messages go through every week, since I'm
trying to keep this list from getting repetitive messages.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

3) Weird music & Board Games

I run another group for weird-music fans who like to meet for board &
card games in SF & the East Bay. The games run the range from things
like Scrabble, to Apples to Apples, to German games like Settlers of
Catan. We rarely play the same games 2 weeks in a row. We try to meet
on Sunday evenings so far, when not trumped by other events.

If you're interested in joining this email group (which is a google
group, btw), let me know.

Email me at mattdavignon@.... I can't view emails sent to sbcglobal.net.
-------------------------------------------------------------------

4) Anyone else want to co-moderate?

I admit I've been terrible in keeping up with this list (mostly
because it doesn't send me reminders to my gmail account). Does anyone
else want to co-moderate with me? Unlike most mailing lists, this one
is ONLY for invitation announcements, and specifically for
experimental/avant-garde music. So moderating involves filtering out
gig postings and discussion.

Invitation announcements may be things like:
--Send your cd to this radio show for airplay
--Seeking a bass player for show
--Seeking a collaborator for a project
--Call for submissions for a festival
--You're all invited to participate in my ad-hoc avant-garde improv hoedown!

Caveat - I'm probably going to only extend co-moderate duties to a
person I personally, to ensure that it's not somebody looking to let
their junk mail through. Fortunately I know about 3/4 of the folks on
this list.

Meanwhile, I'll try to get better about keeping up with postings.

Matt

  Hello!

Moe! Staiano here to announce the (long rescheduled) 4th Annual ROCK
LOTTO to be taking place at 21 Grand on December 15th, a Saturday at
that! I am looking for musicians to participate and play in this fun
event. A lot of you are aware and have played in previous Rock Lotto
shows, but for those of you who want more information and may be
interested in playing, here's the run-down:

- Participants submit their name and the instrument they play. Then
the names are drawn from a hat to form bands. The bands have about a
month or so to write about three to five songs, or about a 20-minute
live set, and then everyone gets together to rock in front of an
audience.

- This newly drawn "band" meet up with each other on your own terms
and create and rehearse new songs to be performed at the date of the
show. The songs must be composed and not improvised. You are allowed
only one cover song, unless you present a string of covers tunes
creatively.

There have been some really great performances and bands from the past
other four years (we skipped a year) with some awesome results from
the participants.

Again, the date is Saturday, December 15th, 2007. Venue is 21 Grand at
416 25th Street in Oakland. The show will benefit 21 Grand as well.

If interested, please email me at: moestaiano1@...
Please include:

-Your name
-What instrument you want to play
-Any background info about yourself

Instruments needed includes:

-Guitar
-Bass
-Drums/percussion
-A singer
-Keyboards
-Reeds/brass
-Etc.

Looking forward to this. You may also forward this to others who may
be interested. Hear from you soon.

Hi!

Moe! Staiano here just saying that the ROCK LOTTO, set for March 30th,
is still in high need of musicians who would like to participate.
Those of you who are unfamiliar with the event, participants are drawn
(randomly) with other musicians to make up a band and create four or
five new songs (or a 20-minute set), unimprovised, to be played in
front of an audience at 21 Grand on March 30th. The amount of people
who was interested that responded was low and so more interested
parties are needed. If the turnout is low, I may have to forefit the
show and postpone until a later date either later in the year or have
it altogether next year around time same time.

If interested, please email me your name, instrument that you want to
play and anything else I may need to know. Thanks.

Sorry if this has already been posted but...

The Tank is currently accepting proposals for:
Bent 2007 : The Fourth Annual Circuit Bending Festival
Proposal Deadline: January 26, 2007
Participant Notification: February 5, 2007

The Tank is pleased to announce the fourth annual Bent Festival. In celebration
of our
fourth year, we will be holding three back-to-back festivals across the USA.
The schedule for the 2007 festival is as follows:

Bent Los Angeles, April 12 14
Bent Minneapolis, April 19 21
Bent New York City, April 26 28

In response to the growing interests of the community, this year we are
interested in
opening up the Bent Festival to performers and artists that create their own
electronics as
well as to those who hack, bend, modify and destroy them. We are currently
seeking
performers and artists to participate at each of the above locations and are
specifically
looking for submissions in these categories:

Performers: Bands or solo artists who incorporate home built or circuit bent
instruments
or ideas in their performance. Please email a short description of your act,
along with a
link to mp3s and photos if you have them (no attachments larger than 1mb!). Also
let us
know which of the above locations you would like to be considered for. if you
donšt know
what circuit bending is, please research it a bit before you apply.

Installation Artists: We are looking for artists who can commit to spending at
least 15
hours in our space over the course of the festival creating site-specific pieces
of art that
somehow incorporate circuit bending. Each of the three venues will be quite
different, but
we are looking for artwork for each of them. We will provide space and as much
materials
and electronic equipment and tools as we are able. Please send a one-page
proposal of
what you would like to do and examples of your past work. Also, please be able
to commit
to spending time in the space during the festival and be prepared for a shared
and at
times hectic work environment - no white walls here's.

Artwork: In addition to installation artists we are also interested in having
artwork up on
the walls that fit into the spirit of the festival from people who might not be
able to join us
in person or who canšt commit to working in the space during the festival.
Please submit
digital images or links of your work and a brief description.

Workshop Instructors: Anyone who is able to lead a workshop or give a
presentation!
Topics in previous years have included general circuit bending
workshops for beginners and extremely technical, hands on workshops on a
particular
aspect or niche of the genre. If you feel you have a subject you would like to
lead a
workshop on, please provide us with a one-page description of that workshop, as
well as
links or examples of your current and past work in the field.

Bending Recipe Book: This year we are going to be putting together a very
home-grown
book of circuit bending instructions for beginners. The format will be a large
collection of
instructions submitted by circuit benders from around the world. If you have a
favorite
bend that you would like to share with the world this is your chance! We will
collect as
many of these as we can collect and bind them into an inexpensive book that we
then sell
at the festival. To submit, please provide a step-by-step list of instructions
(including
photos if you can, and details of what toy and parts are used). We will credit
you in the
book and send you a free copy.

Stipends for all festival performers, artists, and workshop leaders will be
provided. We
have a limited number of travel grants available as well. Please get in touch
for more info.

Submit all proposals and questions to contact@...

Thanks,

Mike Rosenthal
