Sorry if this has already been posted but...

The Tank is currently accepting proposals for:
Bent 2007 : The Fourth Annual Circuit Bending Festival
Proposal Deadline: January 26, 2007
Participant Notification: February 5, 2007

The Tank is pleased to announce the fourth annual Bent Festival. In celebration
of our
fourth year, we will be holding three back-to-back festivals across the USA.
The schedule for the 2007 festival is as follows:

Bent Los Angeles, April 12 14
Bent Minneapolis, April 19 21
Bent New York City, April 26 28

In response to the growing interests of the community, this year we are
interested in
opening up the Bent Festival to performers and artists that create their own
electronics as
well as to those who hack, bend, modify and destroy them. We are currently
seeking
performers and artists to participate at each of the above locations and are
specifically
looking for submissions in these categories:

Performers: Bands or solo artists who incorporate home built or circuit bent
instruments
or ideas in their performance. Please email a short description of your act,
along with a
link to mp3s and photos if you have them (no attachments larger than 1mb!). Also
let us
know which of the above locations you would like to be considered for. if you
don¹t know
what circuit bending is, please research it a bit before you apply.

Installation Artists: We are looking for artists who can commit to spending at
least 15
hours in our space over the course of the festival creating site-specific pieces
of art that
somehow incorporate circuit bending. Each of the three venues will be quite
different, but
we are looking for artwork for each of them. We will provide space and as much
materials
and electronic equipment and tools as we are able. Please send a one-page
proposal of
what you would like to do and examples of your past work. Also, please be able
to commit
to spending time in the space during the festival and be prepared for a shared
and at
times hectic work environment - no white walls here's.

Artwork: In addition to installation artists we are also interested in having
artwork up on
the walls that fit into the spirit of the festival from people who might not be
able to join us
in person or who can¹t commit to working in the space during the festival.
Please submit
digital images or links of your work and a brief description.

Workshop Instructors: Anyone who is able to lead a workshop or give a
presentation!
Topics in previous years have included general circuit bending
workshops for beginners and extremely technical, hands on workshops on a
particular
aspect or niche of the genre. If you feel you have a subject you would like to
lead a
workshop on, please provide us with a one-page description of that workshop, as
well as
links or examples of your current and past work in the field.

Bending Recipe Book: This year we are going to be putting together a very
home-grown
book of circuit bending instructions for beginners. The format will be a large
collection of
instructions submitted by circuit benders from around the world. If you have a
favorite
bend that you would like to share with the world this is your chance! We will
collect as
many of these as we can collect and bind them into an inexpensive book that we
then sell
at the festival. To submit, please provide a step-by-step list of instructions
(including
photos if you can, and details of what toy and parts are used). We will credit
you in the
book and send you a free copy.

Stipends for all festival performers, artists, and workshop leaders will be
provided. We
have a limited number of travel grants available as well. Please get in touch
for more info.

Submit all proposals and questions to contact@...

Thanks,

Mike Rosenthal

Greetings All!

I'm a basement recording artist out of Madison, WI (using
Propellerhead Reason software mainly). I am looking to network with
other people who are into outlandish electronic music, and are
interested to see where we can possibly take it as a culture.
Hopefully, I'll get to know at least a few of you, and maybe even get
into some kind of collaboration.

Talk to you soon!

Hi – thanks for your reply... I tried to sign up at the site itself, but I guess hat didn’t work since I have received nothing since then...

So Here’s an email to join the group...whatever “join” means.

“meanwhile” -- on February 5, Butch Morris will conduct an Improv:21 event for Rova:Arts. At this informance, he speaks to / with Derk Richardson and the audience about his system of composing/improvising called “Conduction.” To help him demonstrate the system, he is looking for  8 string players. well: 6 to 8. Our budget being what it is, Rova can’t afford to pay anything more than “expenses.” So we’re offering $25 per musician which ought to cover travel. Local musicians only please (Bay Area).

The informance takes place at 7 PM at SFPALM in San Francisco. That’s the Veterans Building,>> 4th floor<<, right near to the Opera House, and within which is housed Herbst Theater; a short walk from BART, and there is municipal parking 1.5 blocks away. The string players need to arrive by 6 PM

Whoever comes will be happy they did; this is the guy, along with Zorn, who really started insisting on cues and conducting improvisers. His “thing” is different from what we’re all up to out here. Worthy of consideration for sure.

If you could get this up there, I would really appreciate it; people interested should contact me directly...

thanks

I'm getting some funny behavior from Yahoo Groups. My usual method of approving
messages is apparently not working as it should, and they've been sitting in
purgatory.

I approved them when they came in - I swear! I just logged in today
and they were still listed as "pending".

I'm also getting a lot of spam messages, which I'm rejecting. I'll see if I can
change the settings so only list members can submit messages. (If non-list
messages want to send something, they can send it to me.)

Once again - sorry!

Just wanted to tell you about Bam Bam Slam- a new online ongoing talent video
competition that has "Instrument Solo", "Rock Band", "Rap Battle", "Singing",
"Dj Spin-Off"
as a few of the categories.. as well as over 40 other different video
categories... check it
out to see which one is for you!

The cool part is, you don't even have to pay your entrance fee (which is only
5-10 bucks
anyway), but you can get a family member, friend, or fan to enter it for you,
and both of
you split the winnings!

it's also an intimate setting, only competing against 4 people at a time.. and
the
participants are the judges. YOU get to choose who moves on to the next
level...

it's fun and it will help you improve in whatever field your in. this could
mean great
exposure for you, and a chance to get selected to appear on an upcoming reality
talent tv
show spinoff... based on the winners of the online contest...

the site will be launching at the end of this month, but if you enter your email
address at
bambamslam.com you will get a chance to enter some material in for free, being
that you
will be one of the first to try it out.... get in it before it blows up, and
you can say you
were among the first pioneers. that's always a cool feeling, right?

Send Email Send Email

The Sugar Valley Philharmonic, a large, improv orchestra that runs
relay races, is seeking musicians for its debut in the arts-focused,
interactive section of the Castro Street Fair (slightly to the left
and off the beaten path from the main festival).

Sunday, October 1, 2006
11am - 6pm
18th Street between Hartford and Noe
San Franshisky

This is the second incarnation of the musical performance model from
Sugar Valley 2005 where 'Lude the Narcotics-Addicted Clown played
over a dozen (lu)duets with local creative improvisors in exchange
for eleven motrin, two xanax, several greyhounds and a crumpled
dollar bill (http://www.zoka.com/lude). OK. Maybe 'Lude just "found"
the dollar bill. At any rate, and happily, the Sugar Valley Artists
Collective (http://www.sugarvalley.org) agreed to permit the project
to expand in 2006.

So. Equal parts insanity, Portsmouth Sinfonia, creative improv,
Immersion Composition Society and clown shoes, the philharmonic will
convene to perform in small and large groups throughout the day,
recruiting passers-by as needed.

The philharmonic is looking for:

* acoustic instruments and the musicians who play them
(battery-powered amplification is permitted to a boom-box level only)
- this includes all instrumental families of the orchestra as well as
experimental instruments and toys

* a minimum two-hour commitment starting at 11am and ending at 6pm
(experience tells us it's usually 5pm); longer shifts are encouraged

You'll need a music stand for any conventional and graphic scores,
but playing by ear is perfectly fine.

As much as possible, scores and mp3s of material will be sent in
advance of the performance day. No rehearsal will be scheduled.

People do dress up, or down, at the Castro Street Fair but Sugar
Valley has its own aesthetic of individual self-expression. Formal
attire is suitable, of course, but come as you are.

To join the philharmonic please send email to mailto:lude@...
and indicate your instrumentation and preferred time commitment.

Contact 21 Grand (21grand@...) if you're
interested in participating:

Call for Participation: Duck and Cover 2 at 21 Grand

What Is This Duck and Cover?
Duck and Cover will be an evening (maybe two or
three) of radical reinterpretations of popular songs
performed/reformed/deformed by musicians,
performance artists, dancers, and the like to take
place Halloween weekend at 21 Grand in Oakland. (Dates
haven¹t been solidified yet.) Hopefully, there will be
an audience, and participants will be paid.

Why A Night of Covers?
This show came out of a discussion about audiences
for experimental music and issues of ³relevance² of
experimental music performances to the general public.
It is also in response to the resurgence of pablum pop
(a la Brittney Spears), the resurgence of intellectual
property issues, and the show, ³American Idol,² where
talent is judged based partly on one¹s ability
to perform a relatively faithful rendition of someone
else¹s material. Unlike the previously mentioned
televisual endeavor, we aim to present unfaithful
renditions that deconstruct the song, work with it in
an unconventional way, or use it as a leaping off
point to do something more interesting. Besides, it
just sounded like fun.

Are there Criteria?
The premise is to take songs or pieces of music with
which a general audience is likely to be familiar and
then perform it in an unconventional way, whether
through sampling/digital processing, interpreting it
via another art form, improvising upon themes or
patterns of the music, or doing a relatively straight
rendition using radically different instrumentation.

A maximum of 20 minutes will be alloted to each
selected performer/group, therefore you could
conceivably cover multiple songs.

If you are doing a more or less ³straight² cover, no
more than half of the instruments (including voice)
commonly associated with said song can be used. For
example, if you were to cover a conventional rock
song, (vocals/guitar/bass/drums) you could use at most
two of these instruments. You could choose vocals and
guitar, but it would be more interesting with trumpet,
tone generator and theremin.

How do I communicate my desire to participate in this
event? You can e-mail 21grand@... with your
name, contact info, and a description of what you
would do, including which song(s) or music you would
do it to. It could be a bit vague (e.g. butoh dance to
Black Sabbath; duet for tuba and laptop of Broadway showtunes).

Palais Idéal: A Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music
Chico, CA—Oct. 19-22, 2006

Le Palais Idéal: The Ideal Castle

Ferdinand Cheval was a postman from Hauterives, France who, one day
in 1879 while walking his route, tripped on a strange looking stone.
The stone intrigued him so he picked it up and put it in his pocket.
Cheval returned the following day to collect more of the curious
rocks, and he just never stopped. For the next 33 years he collected
small and large stones from along his postal route and used them
with cement and lime to build an ornate and surreal castle that he
had daydreamed about on those long walks delivering the mail. Cheval
had no experience building or sculpting and his neighbors quickly
labeled him insane, yet he stuck to his vision and—working alone for
those 33 years—completed his "fairy-like palace beyond imagination":
Le Palais Idéal.

Another dream: A large collection of musical oddballs and innovators
gather together in the sleepy college town of Chico, Calif. and take
the place over for a few days under the banner of Palais Idéal: A
Festival of Adventurous, Strange and Visionary Music. This isn't
merely an experimental music festival; this is a call for weirdness
of all stripes and for braveness in the name of new ideas. It goes
down all over town Oct. 19-22, and most anything goes: art rock,
experimental music, free jazz, noise, improv, outsider art,
visionary music, sound art, field recordings, electronica, ambient,
broken folk, homemade instruments, lowercase, multi-media,
performance art, visual music, adventurous rock, post rock,
conceptual music, song poems and the rest…

There won't be any monetary guarantees for this first installment of
Palais Idéal. But we will guarantee performers a place to stay (in
the home of one of our volunteers), a pass to all the shows, and if
logistics can be worked out, audio and video recordings of each
performance will be made available to performers after the fest.
After we pay for the posters and the soundpersons we'll split
whatever dough is left evenly between all of the acts.

This festival will be happening in the midst of Artoberfest, which
is an effort by the city and local arts organizations to make the
month of October into a power-packed festival of arts that will
showcase Chico as a desirable arts destination. My hope is to build
a fun and highly visible castle that will function as the
unpredictable irregular heartbeat of the month's festivities. And
maybe, during this time when the city is focused on local arts
programming, this unique event will inspire them to help support
Palais Idéal in the future.

With even the smallest amount of additional backing, sustaining (and
expanding) an annual festival of adventurous, strange and visionary
music becomes a real possibility—which makes this dream not so crazy-
sounding.

If you want to take part, give me a call or send a note. I can't
wait to hear your sounds.

And please, pass this note and my contact info on to anyone else you
think might be interested in performing.

Thanks, Jason Cassidy

A friend of mine, the avant-rapper Bizzart is coming to town for a 21 Grand
show on July 21. For part of his set, I'm hoping to assemble a backup band
of local improvers. Ideally, we'd come up with a couple of song frameworks
rock-lotto style for him to freestyle to. (IE: have 1 or 2 practice sessions
to create loose frameworks.)

I'm looking for someone who is not averse to playing 4/4 hip hop beats for
this set. Of course, you'd be encouraged to work in some prepared drum
sounds or other unusual ideas into that frame work, but he should have
something to rap to. It doesn't *always* have to be snare on 2 and 4, but
there should be a sense of flow. These must be live drums - no programs! Any
takers?

Anyway, please let me know ASAP. Please check out some of the samples on
Bizzart's myspace page (www.myspace.com/bizzart) to see what he's about.

A N N O U N C I N G

We get the funniest looks from/everyone we meet.

THE 6th ANNUAL TRANSBAY SKRONKATHON BBQ

ACME Observatory and the Transbay Calendar are at it again. We're putting
on an all-day creative music and BBQ marathon at the 21 Grand gallery
in Oakland, CA, on Sunday, August 6, 2006, with wall-to-wall music inside
the gallery, hot grills and cold drinks in the alleyway outside.

As usual it's a free event. We'll take donations for the benefit of
the Transbay Creative Music Calendar, but we have no budget pay anybody.

The Skronkathon is always a great day of hanging out with a whole lot
of interesting, intelligent people like you, combined with a mess of
extremely attractive music like yours. And of course, the day is
always a perfect sunny summer Sunday.

So, we're looking for volunteers to play (and volunteers to help out,
see below.) If you make music that defies labels, breaks categories,
confounds expectations, raises eyebrows, provokes debate or otherwise
comes from left field (or outer space!), we want to hear from you.

If you are interested in performing please email td@... and include
the following information:

    + group and performers name
    + description of your music
+ how long you'd like to play for (minimum and maximum, please.)
+ range of preferred start times.

We want to present as many performers as possible, so please don't
propose playing in more than one group during the BBQ.

Although there is a PA, there will be minimal setup time, so please
keep in mind sound check will be "on the fly". It is a small space --
"unplugged" is an option to seriously consider...

Once we get an idea of the submissions, we'll try to put together a
logical schedule...

     ***********************************************************
     * We also need volunteers to help out with minding *
     * the donation jar, running the PA, helping people *
     * load in and out and generally coordinating *
     * things. Please let us know if you can help!!!!! *
     ***********************************************************

                      Thanks for your interest,

Music for two cellos and twenty-four televisions

I'm a composer and I have a project opening on June 2nd. One of the cellists
I had lined up cancelled and I need to find a replacement immediately. The
project is for two cellos, twenty-four televisions, and electronics. You'll
be performing live cello music in front of a wall of televisions displaying
various types of edited video. Please visit the website at
http://www.fivelines.net/2twelve.shtml to find out more about me and the
project. I'd say the music is moderately difficult, but not insanely so.

The dates of the project are June 2, 3, 9, 10 in 8pm at a small theater in
Berkeley.

Idealy, you like semi-experimental projects and have contemporary music
experience.

There is some pay, and if you are interested in this, please email me your
resume and/or a link to your website. You may call 415.264.0526 if you'd
rather discuss this project.

Thank you!

Hello,

We had a last minute cancellation of the band that was to perform at our art
opening/reception on Friday May 5th sometime around 10p.

If you know of a small-ish single, dou or trio (small stage area) that could
play a set, let us know.

It is a very casual reception and we like the cienematic, experimental stuff
with vocals the best - but we are completely open to whatever talents you
can provide.

We have a small but adequate PA (2 mics, mixer and 15" loudspeakers) can pay
some $$$ and definately treat you well (drinks and glory) but it is an art
reception and we arent charging a cover, so I wouldn't expect Bill Grahm
Presents.

If you are interested at all, send us a link to a page or myspace site with
some info!

Thanks a bunch!

Increasingly serious, MIDI-capable laptoppian seeking similar-minded,
similar aged (~20 y.o.) electromusician for duo projects. Preferred styles
would most likely be musique concrete glitch, glitchtronica, synth-indie
pop, bastard pop (mashup shit) or even abstract hip-hop. Mostly I've just
been getting frustrated that no one around here is into the whole
laptop-electronica scene.

My favorite artists include Prefuse 73, Max Tundra, Tree Wave, DAT Politics,
Autechre, kid606, Dntel, No. 9, M83, mc chris, Blectum, RJD2

Let me know what sort of stuff you're into, and what instrumentation you
use. Feel free to send mp3 samples, i will reciprocate. I use Reason,
Ableton Live, Adobe Audition, drum machine, keys, guitar, minimal
turntablery, and a theremin I built that I'm not very good with.

klipp av are an audiovisual duo who confront the problems of
insufficient improvisation and live relevance to the location in
laptop performance. The audio is interactive and generative,
adjusted
on the fly by the medium of live coding. The video/generative
graphics machine is passed state information on the generative
algorithms employed in the audio (rather than tracking the bare
audio
out). Audio and visual material is extracted from the performance
environment to engage with the space. Automated analysis routines
assist the fast cataloguing of events as audiovisual composites. An
essential facet of the improvisation is the dialogue with event
generating algorithms and the mappings themselves. Performance
follows a continuum from correlation to contest between audio and
visual modalities.

Conference overview
-----------------------------------
"..the media have broken down in their traditional forms, and have
become merely puristic points of reference. The idea has arisen, as
if by spontaneous combustion throughout the entire world, that
these
points are arbitrary and only useful as critical tools, in saying
that such-and-such a work is basically musical, but also poetry.
This
is the intermedial approach, to emphasize the dialectic between the
media."
~ Dick Higgins (August 3, 1966)

This conference seeks to highlight new areas of aesthetics and
interrelations in computer music. These may include:
- Connections between computer music and other media, such as
film,
dance, theatre, new media, and the specific role of technology in
that relationship.
- Interface and control systems – controlling and manipulating
sound
through haptic, gestural and other mediums.
- Media as aesthetic agent - generational mechanisms, modelling
agents, sound source, meta-composition, sonification.
- Computer Music and medium-less states – psycho-acoustics and
auditory illusions.
- Connections between computer music and intermedia practice in
other areas such as education, research, software / hardware
development and distribution.
- Computer music as physical, tactile interactive media.

Medi(t)ations: computers, music and intermedia

Australasian Computer Music Conference
11 - 13 July 2006
Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide
Adelaide, Australia

:: info@...

-----------------------------------
Conference overview
-----------------------------------
"..the media have broken down in their traditional forms, and have
become merely puristic points of reference. The idea has arisen, as
if by spontaneous combustion throughout the entire world, that
these
points are arbitrary and only useful as critical tools, in saying
that such-and-such a work is basically musical, but also poetry.
This
is the intermedial approach, to emphasize the dialectic between the
media."
~ Dick Higgins (August 3, 1966)

This conference seeks to highlight new areas of aesthetics and
interrelations in computer music. These may include:
+ Connections between computer music and other media, such as film,
dance, theatre, new media, and the specific role of technology in
that relationship.
+ Interface and control systems – controlling and manipulating
sound
through haptic, gestural and other mediums.
+ Media as aesthetic agent - generational mechanisms, modelling
agents, sound source, meta-composition, sonification.
+ Computer Music and medium-less states – psycho-acoustics and
auditory illusions.
+ Connections between computer music and intermedia practice in
other
areas such as education, research, software / hardware development
and distribution.
+ Computer music as physical, tactile interactive media.

Keynote Speakers
-----------------------------------
Mitchell Whitelaw
-----------------------------------
Mitchell Whitelaw is an academic, writer and artist with interests
in
new media art and culture, especially complex generative systems
and
digital sound and music. His work has appeared in journals
including
Leonardo, Digital Creativity and Contemporary Music Review. In 2004
his work on a-life art was published in the book Metacreation: Art
and Artificial Life (MIT Press, 2004). His current work spans
generative art and sonic and visual data-aesthetics. He is
currently
a Senior Lecturer in the School of Creative Communication at the
University of Canberra.
-----------------------------------
Fredrik Olofsson + Nick Collins (klipp av)
-----------------------------------
klipp av are an audiovisual duo who confront the problems of
insufficient improvisation and live relevance to the location in
laptop performance.

Ok, here we go again, inspired by Gino Robair's "I Norton" show at 21 Grand,
I'm putting together another "Conduction" show.

This one will be on Sunday, April 23rd, and will feature guided
improvisations and/or compositions by: Cheryl Leonard, Matt Ingalls, Tom
Duff and a 4th conductor who I'm waiting for a confirmation from.

Now we need to build the orchestra. We're looking for folks on a wide
variety of instruments including strings, brass, percussion, voice,
electronics, and "other". Ability to read standard notation is not required,
but it will be helpful to know who can. It's more important to be able to
improvise under specific sets of instructions, and pay attention to the
conductor while playing. Please be prepared to bring a music stand, and your
own amplification if it's needed. We will have at least one practice session
on the afternoon of the show, and we'll try to schedule one in the
preceeding week as well. Participating musicians should plan to take part in
at least 1 practice set.

If you're interested in participating, please let me know. Don't forget to
include your email & instrument (in case I don't know).
