Snoop Dogg: R&G: The Masterpiece
“He’s Still Got It” An Album Review by Nfared
Rap stars of today’s era are here today gone today one hit wonders that hardly
experience a sophomore album. Then there are the old pros. These artists have
been making albums for ten plus years, and still manage to remain relevant.
Snoop Dogg, long a figurehead in west coast rap, is proving to be a rap artist
with longevity as he releases R&G (Rhythm and Gangsta): The Masterpiece. It’s a
laugh, cry, cry laughing well—masterpiece.
Combining the skill of his early beginnings with an audible passion, “The
Bidness” is truly from Snoops heart. He’s upfront; “I had to tell you the truth
homie/ but you got mad/yeah I hurt your feelings fuck it/it’s too damn bad”,
self-assured; “I might floss a different bitch/but the pimpin’s the same”, and
charismatic “You ain’t got no chance/you ain’t got no fans/I kick the shit out
you punk/look mama no hands. He relaxes on the Teamwork Music produced “Snoop
D.O. Double G”. The chorus is smooth and fluid; “Snoop D.O. Double G/the way you
rip’s so lovely/it sounds so viciously/when the thump in the trunk go bump bum
bump.” West Coast meets crunk on the Lil John produced “Step Ya Game Up”. John
masterfully fuses to two regions in a way that shouts out the south and still
lets Snoop get is C-walk on. Beautiful part 2, “Perfect” picks up where the
first edition left off, complete with an Aaron Hall sounding Charlie Wilson. The
album comes to a sexily humors pace with the
funny “Fresh Pair of Panties On”. The chorus sums up the emotion with it’s
questioning, “Do you have a fresh pair of panties on/I’ve got to know/or you can
show me/silk, cotton lace, see through, your sexy thong/I’ve got to know/or you
can show me.” There is then a sudden switch to soul with the next track “Promise
I”. Oddly enough though, the switch from panty lines to promising not to leave
someone just—works. The popish “Signs” is also different territory for Snoop,
but aided again by Charlie Wilson and Justin Timberlake, Snoop masters the
track. Faithfulness is brought up on “Girl Like You”. The chorus paints a
pivotal situation, “ If I didn’t have no dough/would you love me/if we didn’t a
place to go/would still be there/or would you leave me alone/when the chips are
down/or would you stay around/and be down/(if so) I gotta have a chick like
you.” Despite the unneeded assist by the half singing half rapping Nelly, the
song satisfies.
Needle Meter With more albums, tours and collabos than that stick can be
shaken at, it’s safe to say that Snoop has had a full career and then some.
There is hardly ever a perfect album though. Songs like “Can You Control Your
Hoe”, and “I’m Gone” do go a bit far for the tolerance level of some. No worries
though, after all this time, at least musically, Snoop still has it. Four
Needles
