Rich Boy “More Then Just Money” An Album Analysis By Nfared
Bling Bling. Diamonds. Rims. These are the markings of Hip-Hop as of late.
Forget skills-- everyone is rich. This makes it a wonder that an artist with the
name Rich Boy didn’t pop up sooner. He has arrived though, with his debut self
titled album. Sure he claims to be rich, but this time there seems to be at
least a little substance behind all the money.
The thunderous “Boy Looka Here” is like the sound of stomping feet as Rich Boy
begins seriously, “Fuck talking get to it/boy looka here.” He is creatively
self-aware with, “See I talk slow/and I rhyme funny/but I ain’t thinking bout
nothing but big money.” He ditches the seriousness to have fun on his breakout
hit “Throw Some D’s”. A wordy yet catchy chorus, “Rich boy selling crack/fuck
niggas wanna jack/shit tight no slack/just bought a cadalliac/Throw some D’s on
dat bitch” combines with a feel good beat created by Butta for Unbeleevable
Entertainment and Polow Da Don to create one of the most infectious rap songs of
this year. Sure it’s business as usual lyrically, “Hit the block on some new
$10,000 rims/…got peanut butter ice cream peter pan seats…” but the sound sticks
to the mental with brilliance. As with most hip-hop albums, Rich Boy is strip
club ready with, “Touch That Ass”. His flow slows even more than usual and he
adds some raspiness for effect with the slick
chorus, “One thing I gotta ask/can I touch dat ass/touch dat ass/touch dat
ass/if I fly you first class/can I touch dat ass…” His versatility shifts into
high gear with the west coast sounding “Gangsta”-- and he’s from Alabama. Note
worthy here is a strong line, “It ain’t magic but a glock will make you
disappear…” An island flare (think Bahamas, or Jamica) comes into the mix with,
“Get To Poppin”, and “Lost Girls, with the latter being a well thought out
attempt to make up for some derogatory lyrics on the album, He is encouraging on
the hopeful chorus, “Get up stand up for your life young girl/even darkness
comes to light/young girl.”
Needle Meter Rich Boy has had a good year, and it’s only March. “Throw some
D’s” has created a buzz any new artist would dream of. If this was not enough,
he has the support of several industry big wigs including John Legend, Big Boi,
Pastor Troy and others that guest star on a solid “Throw Some D’s” remix
including Andre 3000, Jim Jones and The Game.” His sound is weird by all means
which may create a hurdle for some, but his distinctiveness makes him important
and in some respects has already made him a crossover success as people
everywhere sing along, ‘Throw Some D’s on dat bitch!” even if they don’t know
what D’s are. The excitement around him alone is enough to spark interest. It
helps though, that he’s got some talent to go along with the excitement, and
yes, the money.
