Ummm-- yeah.
Devin The Dude: Waitin’ To Inhale “Nothing Short Of Strange” An Album Review
By Nfared
Of all the combinations that make up the many different kinds of music that
exist today, there is one that is quite unexpected. Devin The Dude, with his
debut album “Waiting To Inhale” seems to be bringing together stand up comedy
and Hip-Hop. While the union is an interesting and unique concept, the result is
more odd than enjoyable.
“She Want That Money” is clearly about prostitution; “…and I ran across this
freak who was talking bout she was tryna sell some pussy to me for bout $40 a
nut.” While perhaps an attempt to be funny, the remainder of the track is more
vulgar than humorous. The saga continues with “I Hope I Don’t Get Sick-A-This”.
If nothing else, Devin is good at creating a ‘Who would have thought of these
lyrics?’ effect with, “Who can get they thang suck while they boo boo/I can.” He
brings it back to some sense of normalcy with “What A Job”. Probably the
brightest track on the album, he talks about the joy of the opportunity to do
what he loves; “…Steadily rewinding tryin to make some hot shit/oh what a job
this is/Another all-nighter tryin to get it done/barely make it home with the
morning sun…” The moment though is ruined though with the following track
“Broccoli and Cheese”. His unconventional approach to eliciting sex from a young
lady crosses that extremely thin line between
creative and too much; “Girl this dick is so clean you can boil it in some
collard greens/…girl this dick is so clean/it would probably go good witcha
broccoli and cheese”
Needle Meter There are those albums that are not for everyone, but at least
have something for someone. While Devin’s efforts to take rap to a new level can
be appreciated, his approach is far to brash for his first major album. The very
first track on the album is so left field it makes the ability to stomach the
rest of the album questionable. While there are a few funny moments, the “Boom”
interludes being the majority of them, (and there are only three of those),
“Waiting To Inhale” probably belongs more on the comedy stage than in the CD
changer, and even that depends on what can be defined as “humorous”. Hopefully
Devin stops laughing long enough to realize that perhaps he is the only one that
sees anything funny.
