T.I.
Urban Legend
The Review by Nfared
Since the beginning he has known his greatness. Calling himself the “King of
The South” since his 2001 debut “I’m Serious”, Atlanta native T.I. has
never had any problems with self-esteem. Only slightly taller then your favorite
cousin, he has become known as one of the rap game’s fire starters, his most
publicized beefs being with Lil Flip (which still continues) and Ludacris (which
he says has ended). Determined not to let beef or jail time stop him from what
he loves, T.I. is back with his latest project “Urban Legend”. With beats
from several well-known producers, and some guest appearances, T.I. is ensuring
that the crown stays on his head.
For production, T.I. sticks to the producers he has worked with in the past, and
obviously he knows what he is doing. These producers definitely provide some
excellent, fiery production that probably would influence a purchase had this
been an instrumental CD. Producers T.I. has worked with before that appear here
include Jazzy Pha who provides a definite club hit with “Get Loose” and
Pharrell who provides vocals on the Neptune produced “Freak Though” (of
course what would a Neptune track be without Pharrell’s vocals?). Other
familiar producers include DJ Toomp, and Sanchez Holmes.
T.I. also earns points by taking advantage of some new production blood. New
producers showing up are Swizz Beats who appears on the CD’s first single
“Bring Em Out”, Mannie Fresh who gives some southern flare providing
production on “The Greatest”, Scott Storch who shows up with production
including “Get Ya Shit Together, and “Chilling With My Bitch”, Lil John
who appears on “Stand Up” and Daz Dillinger with “My Life”.
With this project as with his others, T.I.s flow continues to emit excitement
and show great versatility. From southern producer Mannie Fresh to the new style
of Scott Storch, T.I. does not miss a beat, flowing through each song as if he
is married to the tracks.
Lyrically, this CD may sound slightly familiar. T.I. has been known for his
arrogance, bragging, and self-acclamation. This project is no different. For
instance on “The Greatest” he boasts, “It’s been a long time since you
seen a nigga like me/in a pair of Gucci sneakers, jeans and a white
tee/extravagant and outta control I might be/but I’m makin 50K on the road a
night G/rocks in my rings big as cubes in your ice tea/I used to dream bout a
benz/now I own like three/I got the a wine colored V with the wine colored
feet/and recline leather seats/I ain’t lyin Imma beast”. On “What They
Do” he says, “When I tell you I’m a G pimp I’m really bein modest”.
This project is full of lines of praise and self- support. While invigorating
for some, this could be a definite turn off for those who are done with the
‘Bling-bling, I’m in love with myself and all I possess phase’, rap is
going through.
T.I. does reach out though. On “Prayin For Help”, T.I. gets very personal
about the life he has lived and how he feels about everything he has been
through. He starts out with the Lord’s Prayer and then goes into the first
verse with, “Man I’m prayin for help/while I’m looking at the life I
left/it’s kind of hard not to hate myself/but quiet it’s kept/right or wrong
it’s just the way I felt/I might be better off prayin for death.”
There is no denying Urban Legend will definitely be hard to take out of the CD
player. With addictive production, fun (though extremely boastful) lyrics and a
host of guest appearances including Lil Wayne, BG and Lil Kim (singing the hook
on “Get Ya Shit Together” though you wish she would do a verse), T.I. is
determined to remain the “King Of The South” and even it you don’t believe
it, he does, and being dethroned is not in the plans. Final Grade A+
