Nfared Reviews: Nivea
Complicated
You have Beyonce and then you have Ashanti. Beyonce at one end of the spectrum
can at times seem to have an excess of talent. Ashanti on the opposite side,
seems to not have enough. Nestled comfortably in the middle of these two artists
is Nivea. “Okay”, the first single from her second album is currently in heavy
rotation in several markets, setting her up for a strong May 3rd release of
“Complicated”. Nivea, known for her not so normal song titles, continues with
this trend, one that has helped her etch out a comfortable place in the
industry.
When the second single from your album is about as anticipated as the entire
album, you probably have something good going. With a title like “McDonald’s
Parking Lot” it is safe to assume that the song could go in any number of
directions, creating a small amount of suspense as the song starts. By the time
the chorus comes in, it becomes obvious that the song is not so much about the
parking lot as it is about what she will be doing when she gets there. Focused
on cheating on her boyfriend, this will be the meeting place for her and her man
on the side as she instructs, “I need to see you now/can you get out?/my man is
at the house so/meet me at the McDonalds Parking Lot.” This twist put on a
normal song about infidelity (not that infidelity is normal, but well you know)
shows a well put forth effort to keep listeners interested and entertained.
“So Far” puts Nivea in a relationship that is not giving her anything
internally. The beautiful soothing track is like something out of a dream. Nivea
wastes no time doing the bait and switch at the beginning of the song. The
lyrics begin like a love song as she starts sweetly with the chorus, “Weather
we’re on the phone listening to each other breath/or cuddling at home/it’s like
you don’t feel me.” With the aura the song initially gives off, the last line in
the first verse is totally unexpected and instantly changes the mood. Though not
necessarily a magic trick, using the “you never saw it coming” technique is a
unique way to invite listening. This particular song combines initial mystery
with beauty and yet the end result is a song that makes it seem like the subject
matter was known from the beginning. Nivea combines sassiness and confidence
with creativity in a way that attracts and is distinctive. Her voice is sweet
yet solid and she laces each track with an even serving of
these two elements. Nivea knows how to give it her all without over doing it.
Complicated solidifies Nivea’s as an artist that is willing to be different and
be good at it. With its producer credits including Jermaine Dupri, The Platinum
Brothers, and Dream this album may be a bit out there for some, but definitely
positions Nivea to pass the sophomore album test with flying colors. Final
Grade: B+.
