Pretty Ricky

There is interesting, and then there is Pretty Ricky. The Miami based group
composed of four brothers (by the same father) will probably be one of the more
memorable groups to premier this year. Let’s be clear though. Memorable does not
necessitate good. Their unique style and somewhat odd sound almost redefines
weird. Even weirder, their first single, Grind With Me is high on the request
sheet at your local radio station. How the single got there, and what is gearing
up to be a successful album, Blue Stars, is all a mystery. Don’t look now, but
it’s the strangest thing to happen to hip-hop, or R&B, or—what ever they are.

Someone could tell you to brace yourself, but that would not even begin to
prepare you for Nothing But A Number. The track starts off slow and smooth,
almost peaceful. Pleasure, the singer in the group, comes in with fitting
background vocals. Then he starts to sing, “You say it’s because of my age
girl…” As soon as this phrase is over, the song begins a fast journey south. The
production (Jim Johnson and Big D for Unusual Suspects), takes an ear piercing
turn with the addition of what sounds like the deep, ominous whistle of a
tugboat. Gone are the sweet vocals, replaced with member Slick Em at the
beginning of the first verse, rapping (or perhaps, yelling), “I’m a young man
but my dick grown up/I like to beat it up with legs open show guts/I’m the one
you call when you want to get fucked…” The transition from soft romance to
passionate aggression is frustratingly abrupt. The misalignment in this song is
so audible it throws into question the thinking behind the creation of the
group. True enough, people experience different emotional levels when it comes
to sex. Some like it raw, some don’t. However, the attempt of this group to
piece these emotions together haphazardly in one song probably won’t produce
many babies, or fans for that matter.

Play House, though slightly more congruent, still hovers in file 13 territory.
The chorus, “We can play house/and touch, touch/lay you on the couch/and hunch,
hunch/baby just shhh/hush, hush/imma eat ya body out/like lunch lunch” is
fitting for the song title (well at least the hunch part) yet laughable. At
least here, producers Unusual Suspects keep the production simple and leave out
the odd ship sounds. Slightly more upbeat, this particular track is more fitting
for the intense (almost angry) rapping style of the group members. Again though,
lyrical content is an afterthought. In other words, they sound good, but they
don’t sound good. The song will be put on repeat, not so much because of it
being likeable, but more so because the ear will find difficulty detecting what
it just heard. Imagine, that is just what happens when it hits the ear. When it
connects with the brain…

Final GradeCreativity should be embraced. It is so rare to find much that goes
above and beyond set musical standards (which are terrifyingly low) that when
something different appears the effects are synonymous to a magnet. Sometimes,
the results are extraordinary, as with TLC. However, creative expression can go
overboard when it has no point or reasonable boundaries. While Pretty Ricky is
probably the most “different” group to appear in a while, they simply just don’t
make sense. Then there are the raunchy, brain mystifyingly graphic lyrics coming
from the mouths of boys that just hit voting age within the last three years.
Seeing as how this new career path could be lucrative for Pretty Ricky, the
parents are obviously not giving the lyrics a second thought. The listening
audience however, should be cringing, and not because of sexual tension. Final
Grade: D
