Lyfe 268-192, the first release
If there is anything to be learned about persistence, talk to Lyfe Jennings. His
debut CD premiered so quietly on Columbia Records in 2004 it was as if the label
didn’t want anyone to know about the release. When most would quit though,
Lyfe persevered. Now over a year later, his album, Lyfe 268-192, is sitting
comfortably at #11 on the top twenty charts with very little promotional help
from Columbia. The first single, Cry is strong and passionate. With a re-release
set for early summer, the multitalented Lyfe is showing that perhaps, being
ignored is a powerful impetus, rather than a frustrating roadblock.
She Got Kids goes insides the thoughts of a man falling for a woman that already
has children. The refreshingly honest lyrics, written by Lyfe, are synonymous to
the results of a survey of men everywhere who have been in this situation. Lyfe
summarizes the feelings of men in this situation plainly and unapologetically
with lines like, “Although his feelings may be strong/having kids that don’t
belong to him/holding on to him/somehow seems wrong to him.” Lyfe is seeking
understanding, yet saying that if not understood it’s ok because these
feelings are natural and men should not be ashamed to feel this way. Speaking to
women in this song as well, he goes on to say in the second half of the chorus,
“She got kids/and I wanna make sure this is/more than just a sexual trip/see
all I wanna do is prevent those kids from getting hurt again.” Who says men
don’t have feelings?
The church will always be the center of controversy. Lyfe brings some of this to
the forefront with the beautiful and telling Made Up Mind. To ensure boredom
and cookie cutter lyric fear is prevented, Lyfe immediately gets to the point
with the first verse saying, “Lord they really think they fooling you/by
coming to church on Sunday/praying and laying hands on folks stomping and
jumping around faking the holy ghost.” Written by Lyfe, he has obviously sat
through a church service or two. He uses only a guitar, which has a two-fold
effect. First, it gives the song a clear sound. Second, with the guitar being
the only instrument in the song, listening to the lyrics is almost unavoidable,
which surely is the objective. Lyfe’s raspy tenor strongly delivers his
message; God is not the only one that can’t be fooled.
Final Grade
Lyfe has an almost dizzying amount of musical talents. He wrote and produced
every song for this project. His skills on the guitar are seemingly flawless.
The writing is classic; Lyfe bares his soul like a story, each chapter more and
more compelling, each page daring unbelief. As if the honesty here were not
shocking enough, what’s more, it’s a male doing the delivery. Message to the
sleepers: here is a rare second chance. WAKE UP. Final Grade A+
