Young Jeezy: Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101

Rap has become cookie cutter. Every one wants to rap about the same thing, over
and over and over. Granted, everything that there is to rap about, has more than
likely been rapped about. The difference between being distinctive and just
making a lot of noise though, is an ability to uniquely convey thoughts about
situations that are already being put on wax. Add to that passion and an audible
desire to make rap something it has not been for a long time, and the end result
is Young Jeezy. He’s had spins on radio before he even released with group
members Boyz N Da Hood. After that release, he pushed ahead onto his own
release, Let’s Get It: Thug Motivation 101. With something in the neighborhood
of five singles getting spins on radio, it’s been a hectic summer for Young
Jeezy. His solo release shows that he is clearly ready for the challenges of
maintaining a high profile rap career.

Young Jeezy the Motivator: “Thug Motivation”, produced by Shawty Redd begins
Jeezy’s story. He goes from his past to his present within two lines at the
beginning of the track, “I used to hit the kitchen lights/cock roaches
everywhere/hit the kitchen lights/now it’s marble floors everywhere”. If his
sincerity were ever in doubt he convincingly uses arrogance to display his
intentions, “I’m the author of the book/yeah a genius wrote it/there’s a message
in my words, you gotta decode it… I never exaggerated one line/one dime/never
lied to the people, not one time.” With “Standing Ovation”, Jeezy utters a
classic display of self confidence with the line, “Now I’m your favorite
rapper’s favorite rapper/now I’m your favorite trappers’ favorite trapper/…who
me?/I emerged from the crack smoke.” His conviction that he is better than the
average exudes itself through his lines, particularly in the chorus where he
firmly states, “These are more than words/this is more than rap, this is the
streets/and I am the trap/standing ovation.” The sound of the Don Cannon
produced “Go Crazy” urges listening with its trumpets and drum roll at the very
beginning. Here, Jeezy shows his true feelings; “I’m so emotional/I love my
block/I’m so emotional/I love my glock” and with the chorus, gives homage to an
active relationship with the streets, “When they play that new Jeez all the dope
boys go crazy/watch the dope boys go crazy…” The guest appearances of T.I. and
Lil Scrappy are enough to take “Bang” worth the listen. Thought not the last
song on the album, with Soul Survivor, Jeezy brings it home in a sense with one
statement, “This ain’t a rap song nigga this is my life/and if the hood was a
battlefield/then I earned strips” and, “Set the city on fire and I didn’t even
try/run the streets all day/I can sleep when I die.”

Final Grade
Rappers with raw talent are a rarity, making welcome anything that’s does not
sound familiar. Young Jeezy does display the arrogance most rappers possess.
However, it comes across in a caring, endearing manner, as if he has experiences
success, but he has not forgotten where he came from, or in a sense, he has
never left. With nineteen tracks, this album speaks volumes to what passion and
a sincere desire make history can do. Jeezy says it best himself, “Set the city
on fire/and I didn’t even try/run the streets all day/I can sleep when I die.”
Final Grade A+
