An overlapping (or, you might say "conflicting") event in L.A., is
Cinecon, a festival of classic films in Hollywood. I think it
stretches out over parts of five days. Running into JK there is not
unheard of...
I already had two videos of "Ballin' The Jack" featuring Janet's hot
dancing and the bawdy lyrics Ian learned from some old-time
performers. But each video had a music stand RIGHT IN THE WAY. The
other night I heard some talk in the front row that it might be
performed again, by request... and I tried to catch Ian beforehand,
so any music stand that might appear in the meantime, could be made
to disappear...
I didn't catch him, but when the song came up there were only mic
stands in front, which is good. So I started recording. But Ian
flubbed the "regular" lyrics as soon as he started, so I quit.
But later... Janet moved over to where there was not even a mic stand
in the way, so I started up again, oriented vertically. There oughta
be a place for vertical video-- after all, people tend to be taller
than they are wide, but I guess you'll either have to clear the junk
off your computer and turn the monitor, or turn your head. My first
YouTube video was the same way, and it seemed kinda silly. (After
1000 views or attempted views, I took it down.) So this one is just
here, for now anyway.
All in all, it worked out well-- up that close, shooting
horizontally, I would have had to pan down, up, down, up...
And later, I learned that Janet has been doing yoga since age 9,
which probably has more than a little bit to do with her... ummm...
errr... well... Ian calls it "pulchritude."
Without further ado, see Files Section for "BallinTheJack-dance"
movie file.
I'd forgotten how much fun they can be, until I was listening to a
track on Ian Whitcomb's "Comedy Songs" CD. That inspired me (but this
one isn't dirty!)
I know a chanteuse with a uke
And she may be a bit of a kook
No one on the planet
Is nicer than Janet
But why does she say "book" like "boook"?
Yes, I'm here! Sorry to have been out of touch. Work has been crazy
since November. This project wraps up in late May, supposedly. Thanks
for the kick in the pants.

Janet and Brad did a bunch of shows during the three days of the West
Coast Ragtime Festival. I was there for the first day, when they did
3.1 shows (the .1 was a quick appearance in the "Festival Sampler.")
I've posted a video in Files... "I'm a Whole Lot Wilder Than I Look".
I managed to miss the first part of the song, and for some reason I did
it as a two-shot even though Brad had nothing to do...
Beginning this week... "Wednesdays from 10pm to Midnight"
(He promises Janet and the Parlor Boys will be well-represented in his
playlists.)
[I wouldn't be surprised if he has a preview of their upcoming CD, but
I'm just guessing.]
Now that's just great! Janet live! We need more!
If only someone can get a whole concert and post it on
a site like http://www.archive.org/index.php (and
downloadable) my day would be made!
Here's hoping Janet and the band will come East.
Thanks Groupsters,
SteveR

Tim,
About all I can say about the Roches onstage is that Suzzy is off-the-
wall, Maggie is very quiet (leaving folks to try to read things into
her facial expressions) and Terre is... hmmm... hard to categorize
(like their music.) It's odd but having CDs with around 30 songs where
Terre has a lead or featured vocal part, when I heard her telling
stories from the stage I kept thinking "Wow she talks like she sings!"
I'd never listened to any recorded interviews... but why wouldn't a
person talk like they sing, other than Jim Nabors? But in this case I
found it fascinating.
Suzzy retells certain funny stories fairly often, so I'm going to let
you wait your half-year (I won't spoil them for you.)
Scott
[P.S. I wonder who's going to be first to say "Hey you guys, that's off-
topic for this group!"]
Be still my heart! Scott, I just checked The Roches' website
(www.roches.com) and on their list of upcoming concerts is a show on
November 30 at Bass Hall in Fort Worth, just 30 miles away. Yes, I
will be there!
Now if Leonard Cohen would just make an appearance here, I'd be in
heaven.
Tim
Scott,
The rumors are true. I've been stalking The Roches on YouTube for
awhile now, having been a fan of theirs since '86 when I discovered
their "Another World" album. But I've never seen them live! I had the
chance once, here in Dallas, in the late 80s, but wasn't as devoted
then as I am now, so I passed up that chance. Shame on me. I do hope
to see them live before they stop performing altogether, if possible.
They FINALLY released another CD ("Moonswept") and I'm enjoying it now.
Someday you'll have to give me a report on what their shows were like
live. I've never talked to anyone who has seen them.

Tim,
Word on the street is that you've watched some YouTube videos of The
Roches...
it just so happens, the only time I've deliberately skipped one of
Janet's shows in order to see someone else, it was The Roches (my first
time seeing all three sisters.)
In the past I've posted videos to YouTube using the name jkfan2005, but
in the uploading process the audio always went way out of sync. Now,
thanks to a faster computer, I can "export" (convert) a file from .mov
format to mpeg-4, and reduce the screen size to what YouTube uses,
which is said to be a good way to solve the problem.
My first try came out fine-- look for "Paradise Wobble," which is one
of my favorite Parlor Boys recordings.
You can hear the original Charlie Johnson/ Paradise Orchestra recording
online here:
http://www.redhotjazz.com/cjpo.html
I'll be posting more videos every so often.
I ran onto a brochure for this year's festival (Labor Day Weekend, LAX
Marriot) and Janet Klein and her "Parlour" Boys are included, but
detailed schedules won't be available until mid-August, according to
their site, www.sweethot.org.
Those are nice... although the background has that thrown-
together, "hotel event" look. (Not surprising.)
Let's see... September 2005... what did I do with my spare time in
those P-J (Pre-Janet) days?
After I had six months (and about five shows) perspective, I realized
that what I was thinking during my first show was similar to when I saw
very early TV appearances by Andy Kaufman--
"Is this person FOR REAL? After all, it's a show... so it's a matter
of putting-on-a-show, but then again, the real person is in there
somewhere... hmmm, very unusual!"
I don't know if that comparison will make sense to anybody-- and Andy
Kaufman certainly couldn't compete with Janet in the "gams" department!
I had my picture taken with her, but I need a do-over... three
shots, "just to be sure", but two are bad because of me, and the third
one is bad because my camera saw her red lipstick as black! (Not the
only time that's happened.)
Scott, I just posted some photos I took at the 2005 Sweet & Hot Jazz
Festival in September of 2005. They are decent photos, but it's so
hard for a photo to do justice to Janet's delightful personality. I
admire the way she adopts the mannerisms and poses of a chanteuse of
the early 20th century without it seeming phony. Everything she does
seems to bubble out of her in a very natural way, making her entire
performance come across as a genuine aspect of who she is. I'd love to
be able to see her live more often, but living in Dallas makes that's
pretty unlikely.
By the way, I started learning the ukulele in May of 2006, and since
Janet is a uke player herself, I'm even more drawn to her music. I can
already play "My Bluebird's Singing the Blues"!
Tim,
There are some points of crossover between the Ditty Bops and
Janet... the latest example was the Bops performing "I Wish That I
Were Twins" at one of their shows (so I've heard.) But they write
most of their own songs, while Janet only does old ones.
As for me, I had seen little ad blurbs ("Obscure, lovely and naughty
tunes of the 1910s, 20s, and 30s") for venues that were hosting Janet
and her Parlor Boys, but I had a lousy work schedule at the time...
and I hadn't seen a photo or heard any of the music... but finally in
December 2005 I was looking for something to do on a Friday when I
was accidentally free, and they happened to be playing at Boulevard
Music in Culver City. Janet was struggling with laryngitis, but I
was quickly won over anyway!
I hope you will post some of your photos...
Scott
Scott, thanks for posting those videos. I also took a look at the
Ditty Bop videos you had at PhotoBuckett. I wasn't familiar with them,
but really like their music!
I saw Janet live, in two performances at the Sweet & Hot Jazz Festival
in Los Angeles in September of 2005, and was totally entranced. I did
chat with her after her second performance (and got a photo with her),
and was struck by how sweet and sincere she seemed to be. She even
pointed out that I had changed my shirt since her last performance
earlier that day! I think I had taken so many photos during her first
show that she had noticed me.
By the way, the song "Hello, Bluebird, Hello" was performed by Judy
Garland in the movie "I Could Go on Singing" in the sixties.
Thanks for hosting this site!
Tim
And another, a clip of "Hello Bluebird Hello" (this one was recorded in
a better format, so the whole song would have exceeded the upload
limit.)
