I saw her this year perform Ayre and once a year or two ago. And she
is coming to ravinia this year to do Aindamar. By the way, when I
saw her do Ayre, she was very warm and genuine. And we actually
talked for about 10 minutes, because I happened to be the last in
line. And her parents had made the trip from Illinois down to South
Bend, IN to hear her. They were very sweet.

What method do you suggest that information about her concerts be
shared? Cancellations occur. For those fans that want to attend a
concert, is there another suggestion you have?

Hello again
Roverscout thinks it would be a good idea to publish forthcoming
events of D Upshaw but that would be fruitless as she cancels
performances for little or no reason and that would render such a
list useless.

It would not be much use knowing where her concerts were to be held
as she cancells with no notice if she does not feel like performing

Hello, all.

I went to high school with Dawn back in the '70s, although I didn't know her
hardly at
all. I did know her big sister, Dana, who is one of the nicest people I've ever
met. The
whole family seem to be terrific.

When the Gorecki album came out, I rediscovered her and fell in love with her
work.
She has remained my favorite soprano ever since, although I have yet to see her
live.

I am also a singer (NOTHING like her... please! I am more a happy amateur) and
will be
performing on the one night she will be appearing here in Seattle in March. It
broke
my heart when I realized the conflict.

Not long ago, I see someone posted a question about her performance calendar...
Have any of you discovered a web site listing her touring engagements? I would
welcome the opportunity to travel to California or Vancouver, BC to hear her
perform...

upcoming performances? Or is she now going to spend most of her

The recital I went to in DC in February of 2001 had Ives "Songs my mother

Well Richard as we have joined a fan club of Dawn (sigh!) Upshaw I
seriously doubt if anyone will dispute it!! Unfortunately I do not
have the recordings that you have eg. Gretel and Zerlina but I will
take your word for it! I am sure she is a gorgeous Zerlina!!

Dawn Upshaw is one of the most intelligent of opera and concert stars of this
current era.

Anyone who can make a Peter Sellers production like "Theodora" a convincing and
riveting experience has to be one of the greats of all time.

Her best roles on stage seem be "Zerlina," Gretel", and others which call upon a
sweet, perky character with a good deal of inner charm.

Her best performance with orchestra seems to be of Barber's "Knoxville 1915"
which stands up there with the song's dedicatee Eleanor Steber.

Anyone who agrees or disagrees can debate this with me. I have the TV tapes to
prove how great this lady is!

Dawn Upshaw has a very distinctive voice. It
seems to me that no one else has a voice quite like
hers.

Here in the U.S. we have a problem with some of the
radio stations discontinuing the Met radio broadcasts.
In Boston until a few years ago, they were carried
by a commercial station with a very powerful signal
that could be picked up well throughout the
metropolitan area. That station discontinued them, and now
they are carried by a university radio station that
does not have quite such a powerful signal. In some of
the suburbs they do not come in very well, certainly
not well enough for recording.

I have a few of Dawn's recordings and as you can
tell I think she is a wonderful singer. She has such a
warm unaffected voice, she sings straight from the
heart. I have a few recordings and have only seen and
heard the lovely Dawn on cd & video. Australia has up
till 2000 received the Met broadcasts though I guess
due to budget constraints we did not receive any Met
broadcasts in 2001. :-( I did tape her broadcast of Pamina
in the Met broadcast December 1998. Wonderful!!!
