Don't forget our Historic and Folkloric CD release party for our new recording, "Farewell to Nauvoo."
We'll be performing Pioneer tunes as well as Celtic songs, together with Lisa Arrington. It's sure to be a fun evening. And it's free! If you haven't been to the Noni Paradise Stage, that's reason enough to come, just to check it out. (Come early and enjoy dinner at the cafe.)
Friday, November 10, 2006 (7:30-9:00pm) Noni International Paradise Stage 333 West River Park Drive, Provo, Utah.
Free admission!
The Noni stage is in their headquarters building, just north of the My Family.com building in the Riverwoods area of Provo, just down the hill on Orem Center Street.
Did we mention that this might be your last chance to hear us in Utah for a while, since we´re moving east. Liz will be moving to Boston for school, at Berklee College of Music, majoring in Cello performance. Marco, Andi and the little ones are off to Washington DC, for a work project that needs us there for a few months. So come say so-long, and help us celebrate the new CD.
From I-15 take the Orem Center Street exit. Head east (towards the mountains) on Center Street all the way through Orem. As Center Street drops down into Provo (just before the Shops at Riverwoods), you will turn left at the 300 West stop light. Drive less than a block north and you will see the building.
Hi friends,
There´s a nice, friendly interview with us about the new CD, on the Meridian
Magazine. Have a look at
http://www.ldsmag.com/arts/061024fiddlesticks.html.
Also, a reminder -- the CD release party is coming up for Farewell to
Nauvoo. More detailed information will be coming your way closer to the
date, but if you like, you can mark your calendar now --
Friday, November 10, 2006 (7:30-9:00pm)
Noni International Paradise Stage

AND, it might be our last Utah concert for a while, since we´re moving east.

you say hello to the new CD!

Yes, we know we've been promising the delivery of the newest FiddleSticks CD, "Farewell to Nauvoo" since July. Murphy's Law worked overtime on this project, and in the time it took our printer to produce this newest CD, the pioneers could have walked across the plains in slow motion. BUT the journey is ended and the CD is here at last.
FAREWELL TO NAUVOO, Hymns and Songs of the Mormon Pioneers, is now officially in print. It should be on the shelves at Deseret Book and other LDS bookstores already. CDBaby and Amazon will have it processed within a week or so, and soon it will show up on iTunes, Napster, MSN Music, etc. -- as soon as they can get it processed. But of course the best place to get it is right here, from www.fiddle-sticks.com/FarewellToNauvoo.html.
Special thanks to our many friends who pre-ordered. Your CD, and your bonus TSSA recording, made the trek to the post office today. So you should see it soon. If it hasn't made it to you in a week, please let us know!
Of course, if you missed out on the pre-release excitement, it's not too late to order! And there are still some freebies and discounts available by ordering from our website. Check out the details at http://fiddle-sticks.com/FSListenSpecialDeal.html.

UPDATE FROM KATIE
Today: 6:30 am Woke up. Slid into my hiking shoes. 7:30 am Met all the missionaries from Durban North and Berea at the chapel, drove to the Kloof Gorge Trailhead. 8:30 Started up a trail 8:32 Made it to the end. What?? Short hike! We found the right trail, and started up again. 10:30 We got to the bottom of the gorge. I was in front feeling cathartic in my muddy chacos and ROMA cap. Then we followed the river up to the HUGE waterfall. Our crazy Zone Leader then proceeds to climb up the waterfall, at least 50 feet high, but not anything like Bridal Veil. It's like a big wet granite mossy staircase. We all followed with varying agility and some near-death experiences. 12:00 noon Made it up to the top of the waterfall, and then found the trail up at the top and walked to the parking lot.
Yeah. It's been a good morning. I even have scrapes and scratches on my arm to prove what a good district activity it was!
Anyway, things are going well here. My companion is 7 feet tall, quiet, stable and funny as heck. We get along great. Our boarding has an ant problem, but a nice couch. We go running every morning. The ward is full of the funniest people ever.
Funny story #1: There's a very very very LARGE woman in the ward, I'll call her Sister F. She's funny, too. Anyway, we're all sitting in Relief Society and we're talking about promptings of the holy Ghost and how the crap hits the fan when you don't obey those promptings. Sister H. tells a story about how she ignored a prompting and then her life fell to pieces. Sister C. tells a story about how she ignored a prompting to open the window on a crowded bus and then she fainted. Then Sister F. raises her huge arm and tells a story that goes like this, "A few years back I made myself a peanut butter and jam sammy. The Holy Ghost told me to stop eating, but i kept eating. Again, it said, 'stop eating,' and I didn't stop. And now look, I've got a horrible weight problem." The whole room exploded in laughter.
Funny Story #2: I know I'm serving in Africa, but five minutes of my mission this week were in Japan. I met 4 Japanese girls walking down the street. They were visiting a Toyota factory here for 3 days...I know...hahahaha! Anyway, they were funny and took a bunch of pictures. Hopefully they'll email me some. It was so random. I got homesick afterwards for Becca. They almost lost it when I used all the Japanese words I knew.
Funny Story #3: Know how I'm not a big card game fan. But the other day we got in early (since we're not allowed to be out after dark) so we played Phase 10 and Skip-bo. I felt bad. I kept winning and winning and winning. Sister Ison got pretty mad. She then beat me with a Braai stick. just kidding. But she was mad.
Okay, that's enough. I miss you so much. I am slightly homesick this week. I REALLY miss my Xan. And Snelgroves Burnt Almond Fudge Ice cream. And Watermelons. And cool dry Utah nights. But meanwhile I see monkeys while I'm tracting, and I just hiked a gorge and a waterfall, and I have CDs of Zulu Gospel music. So I'm okay.
I love you.
Love, sister katie louise davis

It's mixed, mastered and at the printers. The newest FiddleSticks CD is almost here -- and we are now taking advance orders, with extra bonuses for early birds!
The new CD is called "Farewell to Nauvoo." It contains lots of great old music from the Mormon Pioneers -- but it's more than just Volume Two to our previous "Return to Nauvoo" CD. For this album we teamed up with our friend and fellow musician Lisa Arrington. In fact, about half the arrangements on this album appeared first on Lisa's 1992 solo recording Hidden Treasures. Lisa and the Davis family have been friends for many years and this long-awaited collaboration combines Lisa's vocals and imaginative piano arrangements with the eclectic FiddleSticks Celtic style.
The Album's subtitle "Hymns and Songs of the Mormon Pioneers." The album has some great old Mormon hymns and songs as well as some lovely but largely forgotten old hymns of the time of the pioneers. Not to mention a couple of new songs written by Katie and Liz, and some old-time instrumental tunes of the period just to liven things up. (SEE THE COMPLETE TUNE LIST BELOW). Of course, it's all done with the FiddleSticks fusion of old-time, Celtic, classical, and blugrass -- and in our humble opinion it sounds pretty nice.
And there's a really wonderful extra track: we found an archival recording of an actual pioneer singing the original Handcart Song. As a young woman Margaret Young Boyle made the trek across the plains from Scotland, and when she was 97 she made this recording (way back in 1951). Her amazing voice alone is reason enough to get the album!!
Of course, we'd love to send of dozens of pre-ordered CDs out as soon as they come off the press, so send in your orders now! Pre-release orders get TWO extra benefits: first, free shipping (save $2) AND a free copy of the New TSSA Compilation CD, "Breeze," containing original music from a whole bunch of our friends from the Timpanogos Singer Songwriter Alliance, including a tune by FiddleSticks, of course.

SISTER KATIE SAYS "HI!" FROM AFRICA
Hi Everybody: On Saturday we went to the Shongweni Farmer's Market to "special interest contact" which is missionary-lingo for "shop." I bought some stickers from an Indian Apostolic couple. The man who was selling them yelled at me for being a missionary because women are supposed to keep quiet and not teach/preach/talk in church according to the words of Paul. I just nodded my head and didn't respond because I'm not allowed to teach/preach/talk to weirdos according to the words of Me.
Also at the Farmer's market I met a cool lady named Matheena who goes to India every year to hand pick cool stuff to sell at the market. It was the most beautiful stuff ever: bright quilts and scarvs....beeeautiful. I bought dangly earrings.
The work in Hillcrest has been slow and I've been slighly frustrated, but on Wednesday we had a very busy day with 6 appointments, 2 of which were non-members in member's homes. Cool.
Also we got let in to teach a lesson while tracting for the first time this transfer. Too bad though, because the guy that let us in was a complete nut. He was 30-something, single, and I think he busted all his braincells doing his substitute religion: diving. What you do to commune with God, according to him, is dive as deep as you can until you almost die, and then you come back up. I think he has adrenaline mixed up with the Spirit.
I also got a French manicure this morning! Now I have beautiful french-tipped nails which I will no longer be tempted to bite. The reason we did it is 1. it was 20 rands which is nothing, and 2. the lady that does it is less-active. "Fellowshipping" you know... it's what a missionary's got to do.
Love to all, from Katie D
(Thanks for subscribing to our FiddleSticks Newsletter. If you don't want to be on the list anymore, please send an email to unsubscribe@.... But we hope you will stay with us!)
The newest FiddleSticks CD is in final production, and will be available in a few weeks.
It will be called "Farewell to Nauvoo" and yes, it is a kind of sequel to our album "Return to Nauvoo" -- only with a twist. We've teamed up with our friend and fellow musician Lisa Arrington, and so this recording will be FiddleSticks-Plus!
We've subtitled the album "Hymns and Songs of the Mormon Pioneers." The album has some great old Mormon tunes like "O My Father," "Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief," "This Earth Was Once a Garden Place," and "The Handcart Song." Plus some lesser know Mormon songs like "Lonesome Roving Wolves" and "The Unknown Grave," together with some lovely but largely forgotten old hymns of the time of the pioneers, like "Now My Dear Companions," "There is a Land of Pleasure," and "Love is Little." Not to mention a couple of new songs written by Katie and Liz, and some old-time instrumental tunes of the period just to liven things up. Of course, it's all done with the FiddleSticks fusion of old-time, Celtic, classical, and blugrass -- and in our humble opinion it's sounding pretty nice.
And there will be a special bonus: we found an archival recording of an actual handcart pioneer singing the original handcart song. That alone is reason enough to get the album!!
We'll let you know as soon as it goes to press, so you can get your advance orders in -- we'll certainly offer a pre-release order deal, so stay tuned.
OTHER FIDDLESTICKS UPDATES
Some of the work on this CD has been done long-distance since FiddleSticks is "far-flung" this summer. Becca and her husband Matt just moved to Hawaii, lucky them! Katie is enjoying her mission in Durban, South Africa. Liz is touring with a folk ensemble group from BYU to Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and then Canada. So things are relatively quiet around here with just Xanny (almost 4) and Zina (almost 2). (Pictures at http://www.fiddle-sticks.com/FSGallery.html) But we'll be back performing in August, so keep those wedding gigs and performance requests coming!
DID WE MENTION AMPERSAND IS GETTING RAVE REVIEWS??
Liz taught some workshops at a cello convention in Sacramento last week. She took a box of the new "Ampersand" CD, and after hearing her performances, everybody had to have one. New Directions Cello peformers agree: "Ampersand" is a must-have! Plus, just because we so love our friends on our FiddleSticks Newsletter List, we're still offering a FREE extra Ampersand disk (for your car, computer, or friend) with each Ampersand CD ordered via mail order, Paypal, or our website. For mail order, send to FiddleSticks, 647 N 1280 E, Orem UT 84097 USA. For Paypal, use the address mdavisx@.... For online purchases, go to www.fiddle-sticks.com. (Just be sure to send an extra email to mdavisx@... to let us know you want the freebie).
(Thanks for subscribing to our FiddleSticks Newsletter. If you don't want to be on the list anymore, please send an email to unsubscribe@.... But we hope you will stay with us!)

ABOUT KATIE IN AFRICA:
Hi Everybody:Here I am in lovely Durban.Anyway I really like my area a lot and I wouldn't mind staying here for a long time.I have a feeling the nice companion I have now will be outta here next transfer and I'll get a comp I'll have to "learn to love."Eish.Oh, "eish" is South African for "ayayay" which is Spanish for "eish."
Well there's a flea market here every Saturday and we just did our first set-up-a-table-and-contact-people thingy.I played fiddle. It was hilarious.People would get all excited by the music and stop and listen, then they'd come closer and closer. But then they'd see the other missionaries and the books of Mormon, they'd turn around and book it in the other direction.Funny.
Well, that's it for now.Write me!

UPDATE ON KATIE IN AFRICA
Apparently a whole orchestra worth of missionaries found themselves together in Durban, so Katie and her fiddle have had lots of performance time. Here’s from her latest note home:
This place is so amazing. I love that you drive a few minutes out of town and you can see a herd of zebras eating in a field. Amazing.
Happy Easter. After church we were hooked up with several bags of sweets, and after a terrific dinner, we went straight to the chapel to get ready for the Easter Music Performance, which went super well. They made DVDs and promised to send a copy home. I played fiddle and sang in all the tunes all evening, and then I sang the last song: I Stand All Amazed. Elder Matsoso, my favorite native African missionary, told me that I sounded like a mix between Alicia Keys and Gladys Knight. If I’m lucky by the time I get home, I'll even LOOK black!
So the work is moving along. We have fun teaching. We sing at almost every lesson we teach. And lessons are so unpredictable. We teach Sunday (he's from Zimbabwe) on the side of the road and sometimes homeless guys sit in and listen while smoking Daja. Sweet! And I'm teaching a guy named Serge from the Congo...in FRENCH!
In the rich areas, tracting is a different experience because they have these huge electrically charged fences around the houses, and huge menacing gates with signs that say "Beware we have a 700 lb dog that will kill you if you even THINK about coming in." People here are really paranoid. Anyway, you have to introduce yourself into a little buzzer and speaker box in front of the gate. It usually sounds something like this:
--buzz—
"Hello?"
"Hi, sir/ma'am, how are you? We're missionaries from the Church."
"Okay.."
"We're playing music today and we'd love to share a song with you and your family..."
"No I'm Catholic, I don't want any Mormon music. Bye."
It's so weird.

Sister Katie Lou Davis
P.S. I'm driving now, and these nutters drive on the left side! But I kind of like having the steering wheel on the right side of the car. So I think I'm going to become a mailman.

We want to extend a special invitation to a house concert we're hosting at our home this TUESDAY, MARCH 28. Performing is the wonderful duo "SMALL POTATOES" -- one of our very most favorite acts. Here's the info:
TUESDAY, MARCH 28, 7pm
SMALL POTATOES
Timpanogos Intimate Concert Series
647 North 1280 East, Orem
Tickets at the door: $10
FiddleSticks is so happy to host the amazing SMALL POTATOES, who are performing as part of the Timpanogos Intimate Concert Series. Tickets are $10 and available at the door. Of course 100 % of proceeds go to the performers. Directions may be found on TICS' web page at http://come.to/timpanogos. Or call 221-1108 for more information.
Small Potatoes have a loyal following in Utah, and this promises to be one of the best concerts we've held. Arrive early to get a good seat!!
Small Potatoes is Jacquie Manning and Rich Prezioso. This Chicago-based duo has been touring on the folk circuit since 1993 and in that time they’ve become sought-after regulars at many clubs, coffeehouses across the U.S., and of course, are among the most popular repeat performers for the TIMPANOGOS INTIMATE CONCERT SERIES! They have made repeat appearances at major folk festivals, including the Kerrville Folk Festival, the Walnut Valley Folk Festival, and Philadelphia Folk Festival. They were one of the “most requested” acts at the 1999 Falcon Ridge New Artist Showcase. Jacquie is also a winner of the 1998 Kerrville New Folk Songwriting Contest. More about them at www.smallpotatoesmusic.com
They call themselves eclecto-maniacs. They describe their music as “Celtic to Cowboy” and say it has taken them “years of careful indecision” to come up with a mix of music that ranges from country, blues, and swing to Irish, with songwriting that touches on all of those styles and more. Their two recordings, “Waltz of the Wallflowers” and “Time Flies” , on Wind River Records, cover all these styles. They both sing, they both play guitars and an array of other instruments. They even yodel. Dirty Linen Magazine called them “one of the most polished, inventive, and entertaining shows on the circuit.” Sing Out Magazine called “Time Flies” a “wonderful, wonderfully eclectic” album and said “Small Potatoes might well be leading mainstays on the folk scene for years to come.” Their new album, “Waltz of the Wallflowers” appeared on several "Best of 2000" radio playlists, including WFMT's syndicated “Midnight Special".
When you see Small Potatoes perform, you hear two great voices, some fine guitar playing, and a touch of tin whistle, flute, mandolin, bodhran, and other percussion toys. Together they present a truly rare blend of vocal and instrumental abilities, award-winning songwriting, and arranging talents. They have the unique ability to adapt to the style of music they happen to be playing. They seem comfortably at home whether playing an upbeat cowboy swing tune or a tender, traditional ballad--though there are no rules here either, sometimes the traditional sounds contemporary, sometimes the contemporary sounds traditional. And they also pay attention to the little things, the warmth, the humor and a rapport with the audience that makes for a memorable performance. A listen to a few tracks on “Waltz of the Wallflowers”, Jacquie’s one-of-a kind 1998 Kerrville New Folk winning title track, Rich's powerful “1000 Candles, 1000 Cranes”, or their Celtic-flavored rendition of the Jefferson Airplane classic, “Lather” provides a more than ample illustration.

FiddleSticks "AMPERSAND CD" Is Here
In case you hadn't heard, the new CD is out and on the shelves, and the reviews have been great! This is the best FiddleSticks CD ever! Imaginative, innovative, inspirational -- and lots of fun to listen to! It’s an exciting collection of new tunes and arrangements by Katie our fiddler and Liz our cellist, and takes the music to new heights.
Here’s how Katie and Liz have described the CD on the liner notes:
Katie & Liz Davis are sisters (hence the same last name.) Once upon a time, Katie was born with a fiddle in her hands, which proved less difficult than when Liz was born exactly two years later with a cello in hers. In the early nineties, the girls' mom Kira, a folk harpist, let them gig with her at Bar Mitzvahs and Renaissance Festivals in Maryland. What started out as a casual family hobby eventually grew up, moved to Utah, and named itself FiddleSticks. Lately, Katie and Liz have expanded their musical vocabulary to include more Old-time, Bluegrass, and Jazz influences, while still staying true to their Celtic roots. This album highlights the new techniques and ideas that we've been playing around with. We hope it fits your fancy. –– Liz & Katie
HOW TO ORDER:To order send your check for $15 for each CD ordered, plus $2 per order, to FiddleSticks, 647 North 1280 East, Orem UT 84097 (800-969-7640). Or you can order via PayPal (use email address mdavisx@aol,com for payment). You can also order on our website with a credit card at www.fiddle-sticks.com/FSListen.html or at www.CDBaby.com/Fiddlesticks6, where you can also listen to samples of the tunes on the CD.
Here are the liner notes with info about the tunes.
1 _ Waddle Waltz (Liz and Katie Davis); Jenny Dang the Weaver (Traditional): Millie, the youngest member of our family, is one year old. She doesn't exactly walk--she waddles. We don’t know who Jenny Dang was or what she wove, but the reel’s pretty good, and it highlights Liz's mysterious cello chopping technique.
2 _ Little Maggie (Traditional): The fabled Little Maggie is a troublesome girl, and that really appeals to us. We learned this off of a Bob Dylan CD, but Bob didn't write it. You will hear the dulcet sounds of Jake Armerding's voice and mando in this tune.
3 _ Ha Ha (Liz and Katie Davis): This tune is a piece we wrote mushed with "My Darling I'm Fond of You" that we learned from our mom. If you listen carefully, you'll hear why we call this tune "Ha Ha."
4 _ O May (Liz Davis): Liz wrote O May while she was supposed to be taking notes in English class, one fine high school day. Liz's personal life did not inspire this song.
5 _ Jack Be Nimble (Liz and Katie Davis): Jack IS Nimble. But is he quick? Based on the many key changes you'll hear in this piece, we'd say, "yes."
6 _ Grandma Betty's (Katie Davis): Grandma Betty is the coolest. Katie wrote this when she was eleven. Ten years later, we STILL play it, with a little extra "chop."
7 _ The Aftermath of the Pumpkin Wars (Katie Davis): Katie thought this tune needed a weird name. As Magritte would say, ce n’est pas un titre. Cat is playing piano in mostly "Cape Breton" style. Cape Breton is nice small place up in Canada, where they make really really good music. Better than anywhere else.
8 _ Bonaparte's Retreat (Traditional): Bonaparte DID retreat, in the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. And Civil War soldiers used to play this as a subtle death wish to the opposing side. Jake joins us for some hot mandolin riffs on this tune, too!
9 _ Xanny Boy (Liz Davis): Xanny Boy is our three year old brother who is full energy. He loves to sing and dance with us. Currently, he acts as our chief ukulele player.
10 _ Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier (Traditional): There are lots of versions of this song out there in Music World. We have recorded this tune before, in its more traditional Irish variation (called Shule Aroon) but in arranging this American version we’ve opted for a more jazzy feel.
11 _ Three Little Jiggies Went to Market (Traditional): Everyone needs an Irish jig set. These are Billy McCormick’s, the Connaughtman’s Rambles, and Calliope House.
12 _ Whole Lotta (Liz and Katie Davis): Liz wrote the chords to this beautiful song. The title of the tune is an abbreviation of a saying our mom used to recite, which will not be recited here. Our mother Kira passed away 8 years ago, but we try to keep her useful yet colorful sayings alive. For a list of some of these folksy aphorisms, look for the hidden link on our website.
The album features guest artists Cat Larsen on piano/guitar, Rob Honey on bass, and the trendy and fashionable Jake Armerding on mandolin and back-up (listen to his lilting voice on Little Maggie).

The newest and best ever recording from the FiddleSticks family is in production now and should be released by the beginning of February. It’s called "Ampersand" and it is an exciting collection of new tunes and arrangements by Katie our fiddler and Liz our cellist, and takes the music to new heights.
If you’re in or near Utah Valley, come help us launch it at our CD Release Party on February 3 (more below). Or you can preorder now. To encourage early orders (and make things fair for our friends who live far and wide) mail orders received between now and February 10 will be mailed free of charge.
– Liz & Katie
Here’s the set list. If you want to know more, the "liner notes" are included at the end of this message.

MORE ABOUT THE NEW CD "AMPERSAND"
9 _ Xanny Boy (Liz Davis): Xanny Boy is our three year old brother who is full energy. He loves to sing and dance with us. Currently, he acts as our chief ukulele player."

Happy Boxing Day everybody. If you're near Utah Valley, we hope to see you today at our annual FiddleSticks Boxing Day Party and Concert tonight. (More below.)
Cold Fusion, on the cheap: But first, we want to share an unusual sale on our Celtic Christmas album, "Cold Fusion." Deseret Book Onliine is selling it right now for only $7.99. That's a pretty good deal (a lot cheaper than we could ever sell it for!), so if you're not tired of Christmas (and Hanukkah) music yet, or if you'd just like to stock up for next season, this would be a good time! Don't miss the 2005 FiddleSticks Boxing Day Party:
When:Monday, December 26, 6-9 pm What:Eleventh Annual FiddleSticks Boxing Day Party Where:The Davis House 647 North 1280 East Orem
What's up: Since our arrival in Utah so many years ago, we have welcomed our friends and fans to our home in Orem for a concert and party the day after Christmas: Boxing Day. Traditionally Boxing Day was when the leftover Christmas fare was boxed up and shared with the servants, so leftover Christmas fare is perfect for the potluck snack table, and bring your instrument to join in the after party jam session. Most of all, bring your good cheer. Our fiddler Katie will be leaving for a mission in South Africa in February, so come bid her farewell! And Becca and Matt are visiting from California, so come see us all togehter. For questions or directions, please call 801 221 1108.
Thanks for being part of our lives and sharing our music. We've got a couple more Christmas Shows this season, and we'd love to see you. There are still a few copies of the "Hot Apple Cider" Christmas CD available (and it's not too late to get it for free!). And of course, what would Christmas be without a Family Holiday Newsletter. And links to new pictures of the littlest Fiddlesticklets....
Welcome to the Davises of Orem Christmas Epistle for 2005
It’s that time of year, where we try to compensate for the absence of gracefully composed, handwritten, personalized correspondence with you, our dear friends, by cobbling together a family letter. Here it is, In Our Own Words:
Mark says:
Our late season tomatoes and peppers lie frostbitten in the garden, the coats and mittens have emerged from boxes and closets, and we’re reluctantly saying goodbye to a long, warm Indian summer and bracing for winter. Any day now, we know a storm will blow down from Canada and deep-freeze us until March. Lucky we live in the northern hemisphere, where the Christmas and New Years festivities give a jolly, nostalgic, merry feel to all that cold air and bad weather. So Happy Christmas and Merry New Year to you all, and if you are spending the holidays on a sunny beach in New Zealand or a mountain trail in Argentina, well, we hope you don’t miss the snow too much!
Xanny is now 3, and he and his 1-year-old baby sister (possibly named Zina Sabine, more on that later) saved us this year from what otherwise would have been a serious attack of empty-nestishness, when we took Liz off to her freshman college dorm at BYU in August. But, no. No empty nests around here: we’re still very much in the preschool, diaper, and potty-party business. They’re great kids, these little ones, and I’m fine with being a new dad again (really I am), as long as I don’t do the math and calculate how old I’ll be when we take Baby to her college dorm 17 years from now... Ow! I can feel my bones creak and my arteries harden just thinking about it!
Our little one’s a sweetheart, and her silly giggles and dark smiley eyes and incessant jabber ("whatzat??" and "whoizzit??" are this weeks’ favorites) make it all worth it. We celebrated her first birthday last week, and she’s just starting her first wobbly steps. Our only problem is we don’t know her name. Her birth certificate still says "Camilla Sabine," but Andi just never warmed up to "Millie" so we added "Zina" to her name on a trial basis a couple of months after she was born. Neither option has officially stuck yet, mainly because everybody bailed on the name confusion and just calls her "Baby." Except Xanny who calls her Zina Sabine, so maybe he’ll have his way. We hope by next year we’ll have a name for sure. Maybe "Favorite" or "Helga" or "Oremetta" or "Moon Unit"? In the meantime, "Baby" works, or "Little Girl" or "Sweetums"...
Speaking of Xanny, he’ll tell you his Big Name is "Alexander Max Davis." He knows everybody’s Big Name. And age. And has pretty much figured out all his complicated relationships. He loves his cousins and grandparents and especially his big sisters, who all love him too. And he adores his baby sister, and is sweet and kind to her about 37 percent of the time. But her gift is to love him back, despite the smacks and kicks that sometimes land him in the Naughty Chair. ("I’m being nice now... Can I get off yet?...Is it Yet yet??") He’s in preschool with his friends and he doesn’t act too bored with learning the letters and numbers and colors all over again. He fell and cut open his forehead just before his birthday in October, so seven stitches later he had a very authentic Harry Potter scar for Halloween. He loves doing flips on the trampoline and playing with his Thomas trains and reading books. He plays a tiny guitar, and does a mean rendition of the Spiderman song.
Andi’s turn to defend herself: OK, so I can’t name my kid. I told Marco that we could either add a few more names to this baby or just add a few more babies to our family. You can guess his response. My problem is that I listen to too much NPR. I hear all those great names like Sylvia Poggioli, Snigdha Prakash, Corva Coleman and Lakshmi Singh. I can’t help but to think that the name helped make the woman. Don’t be surprised if you hear a report on your radio from some far off place in 25 years from "Baby Davis." No, that doesn’t really work either, does it? What was the Lord thinking sending me a girl? I don’t know what to call it and I’m going to have to go back to college to study Advanced Utah Girl Hair Engineering. But she is just so great! She’s this brilliant Pitcher-Davis hybrid who keeps right up with our crazy organic hoard and throws fits over fuzzy things (like puppies and kittens, but she also freaks out at my eyelashes). In the words of Patrick Swayze, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."
Becca here
: Matt and I are both at the University of California at Berkeley being underachieving over-achievers (How many hours of Simpsons is it possible to watch each day and still pass your qualifying exams at Cal? The answer may shock you!) We love the Berkeley atmosphere, with the tasty restaurants, farmers markets, swap-meets and street fairs. The most eventful street fair of late was the infamous "How Berkeley Can You Be" parade, where we actually witnessed real live Buck Naked People walking down the street (protesting something that left no impression comparatively). On a more modest note, Matt will finish his Masters in Range Science this December-- He sped through the last semester working on an Army base, taking classes, volunteering with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, going to conferences and writing papers, but most especially playing lots and lots of Hawaiian Slack-key Guitar. I am working on a Masters in Folklore in a slightly wobbly program-- last March, the famous and mighty professor Alan Dundes died mid-sentence during class and left the program with a whirlwind of research notes and no paper trail. Where were people’s scholarships coming from? Where were the applications and acceptance forms? It all vanished with him. The department hired a modernity-locality-governmentality-storyability-gestureifying-communicability guy. Whatever that means. So the program is trying to avoid dissolution in a sea of jargon. We students chant to each other: Folk Tales! Ballads! Quilts! Hand Games! to ward off the -alities and -izations. Along with school I’m working as a bookkeeper (in spite of my lifelong battle with Numerophobia) and tutoring Japanese kids in English (which sounds grand but it’s mostly gluesticks, playdough, and peanut butter). We’re busy, doing well, and loving our hobbit-hole of an apartment and our wee community garden down the way. Love to all.
Katie here:
In January, I started my first semester back at USU in Logan since my study abroad to France. It was an adjustment! The whole "speaking English" thing is still kind of weird. But I did alright, somehow managed to pull off okay grades, and then celebrated the beginning of summer by flying to Berkeley to be with Becca and Matt for a week. That was fun. They live in a place that has cultural events happening daily! I am overcome with jealousy even still. Anyway, I got home and immediately started working for the Uinta National Forest in the Wilderness crew. It was a really fun job, I got to go hiking all the time, and learn to use a GPS (the big high-tech ones) and then after I threw my back I learned how to make maps using ARCMap software. Liz and I went to San Diego together where we wined and dined with famous fiddlers like Mark O’Connor and Darol Anger, and made friends with some of the coolest musicians in the world. After my job ended, I went to a fiddle workshop in Takoma Park, Maryland which was taught by the Kane Sisters from Galway, Ireland. It was amazing and inspiring. Since then, I’ve been at school trying not to fail all of my classes. I’m a bit distracted because I just recently received my mission call to Durban, South Africa, and I don’t leave until February. I’m getting a bit antsy and I can’t muster up the motivation to sit down and write an essay about GK Gilbert and his assessment of faulting of the Wellsville mountains. Can you blame me, really? Anyway, after school’s over, Liz and I are planning on recording a CD which will focus just on us and our "new, improved style." It’s expected to be finished before I leave for Africa.
Liz writes:
This past year has been one adventure after another. I made it through my senior year of high school in one piece. It was full of craziness and good friends. (Editor’s note: by "craziness" she means Student Council, 3.9 GPA, and nonstop clubs, parties, concerts and activities). Over the summer I went to the New Directions Cello Society Festival and the Mark O’Connor Fiddle Camp. They were life changing and cellistically inspiring. I also spent some time in Berkeley when Grandma Betty and I visited Becca and Matt. In August I started school at Brigham Young University. I live on campus, but close to home, so I can see how the babies are doing on Sundays. I’m majoring in Cello Performance. It’s been really busy. I have class from about 9-5 everyday with just enough break time to get my required practicing in. I’ve been corrupting the stoically classical cello department with my Celtic master classes and jam sessions. Some of the cello majors have become addicted to my subversive style. Wahoo - recruits! I’m in the Philharmonic Orchestra and in the folk ensemble (accompanying the international folk dancers). Somehow between all my classes and performances, I have found enough time to be the captain of a Frisbee team. We had a great team -- we were undefeated and took first place in our division of the intramural tournament! I even dove into the endzone to make a goal in the last game (I got over my fear!!!). It’s been a great year! I look forward to the next one. Happy Winter!
More from Mark:
The international law biz took me to Buenos Aires (to help keep the world safe for Argentine honey) and to China a few times (where I’m starting to realize my business is moving, along with much of the rest of world trade). We have teamed up with a Chinese lawyer to do some joint projects (and he helps us with translation – cultural as much as linguistic). (More at www.dltrade.com.) I hit the China lecture circuit, too, and exhorted Chinese law students in a handful of universities across the country about the wonders of free trade and the mysteries of normal economics – which fell on polite but mostly deaf ears. At home I enjoyed watching our little ones grow smarter and cuter by the hour, and managed to to make a nice dent in the house and garden chore list. In our spare time we’re still playing lots of music together. We did a couple of performance tours, got to play on a movie soundtrack, and our "Return to Nauvoo" CD is in its third printing. Katie and Liz are working on a new recording that they plan to finish before Katie takes off for Africa in February, so stay tuned to www.fiddle-sticks.com for details. And come visit us -- we hope to have our Spring City house fixed up and ready for visitors by this time next year.
Best wishes for 2006 from all us Davises!

For our Salt Lake friends, FiddleSticks is also appearing at a benefit concert being hosted by "Heart and Soul," a remarkable non-profit organization that has brought live music and warm cheer to thousands of people in shut-in institutions like senior centers, prisons, and hospitals during the past 11 years. Tickets are $10 per show, but of course additional donations are welcome.
There will be four great performers at the show: the high energy Wildflowers, an all girl family bluegrass band; Inish, a fabulous Celtic duo; the vibrant, five piece, Celtic band Stonecircle, and of course, the traditional and original Celtic fusion tunes of FiddleSticks.
Venue, sound, lights, and performances are all being donated, so that all proceeds can go to the American Red Cross hurricane assistance fund. All concerts will be at the First Unitarian Church, 569 South 1300 East, beginning at 7 pm. Light snacks available for purchase. Tickets are available at the door. For more information, call Heart and Soul at 801-467-5499.
CDBaby Red Cross CD Donations
Our project to donate our CD sales proceeds continues through the end of September. In cooperation with CDBaby.com, our very cool on-line distributor, we are now DONATING ALL PROCEEDS from our CD sales to the Red Cross for hurricane disaster relief. (We've had great success with this project so far: we sold out of our inventory for two of our CDs and had to restock!!)
Just go to our site on CDBaby, buy as usual, and the full amount of our share of the CD purchase price will be transferred directly to the Red Cross!
Easy as that! You get our music, we get a little good Karma, and the Red Cross gets a little more help for their efforts at restoring people's lives after the hurricane.
Thanks! If you've been waiting for a extra good reason to buy some FiddleSticks music, this is it!

DAVIS FAMILY NEWSLETTER
Greetings to friends and family!
It’s time for our annual holiday missive, in which we exaggerate our achievements and entirely omit our disappointments. But who wants to hear about threatened arrest warrants, high cholesterol levels, bindweed and thistle infestations, or the incontinence of aging cats in a Christmas letter?? So, here’s the good parts version of our 2004 family newsletter!
Highlights: New Baby “Camilla” ; New CD “Return to Nauvoo”; and New Frequent Flyer record. Read on!
After we all got over our pneumonia last January (oh wait, we weren’t going to talk about that!) we decided that life’s too short to stay in one place. Our travels started in March when Andi and Xan (then about 18 months old) went with Mark for his annual BYU arbitration competition in Vienna. (Since this is the good parts letter, we’ll resist complaining how the BYU team’s success was greeted by a cancellation of the program and diversion of their funds to other projects...arrrhh!) We continued on to Berlin and Braunschweig to visit Grandma Betty, who was energetically chasing trams and charming stoic Germans as a Mormon missionary.
Then, just before school ended Katie, Liz and Mark loaded up instruments and CD boxes and flew to Japan where Becca and Matt had been living and working as English teachers. We called it a FiddleSticks World Tour and played several concerts around Tokyo and Nagoya. Between performances we got a fun insider’s view of Japan, staying in accommodations varying from a 19th century traditional farmhouse in Nagano to the U.S. Consul General’s residence in Nagoya to an old style Ryokan hotel in Tokyo. We also enjoyed sampling the extremes of local cuisine, from formal Geisha-served sukiyaki to assembly-line sushi to near-revolting “natto” -- fermented bean slime.
Liz then undertook a solo service project in Africa: she accompanied the 3- and 6-year-old children of our good friend Barbara (who is unjustly imprisoned on trumped up charges) to stay with their Grandma in Ghana. Then in August it was time for Katie to move to France for her semester abroad in the town of Besançon. Finally Mark noticed our family still hadn’t visited one major landmass in the year, and so in October he ran off to Argentina for a couple of weeks’ work with the friendly honey exporters.
Mark got back home just in time to welcome our farthest traveler this year -- our new Baby Camilla Sabine, who must have flown all the way from heaven, she’s such an angel. She was born on November 4th and is a real sweetheart -- calm and contended, and very much the center of attention. Big brother Xanny, who just celebrated his second birthday a couple of weeks before Baby Millie was born, adores her quite fiercely -- when he can be distracted from his real loves: trains, balls, and especially letters. (Brag alert:) Before his birthday he learned all the letters and numbers and colors and shapes. Which makes him an annoyance during Uno games, since he’ll wriggle onto your lap, take a look at your hand, and then innocently announce to everyone: “yellow seven, blue five, red eight...!!”
Liz Speaking:
Happy Holidays to all our family friends around the globe. I hope this end of year season is going well for you all. I’ve enjoyed my relaxing senior year after the stress and excitement of a crazy summer in which I was home for a total of three weeks (non-consecutively). Days before school ended, and Days after releasing our FiddleSticks Hymn CD, (that I got to produce) we headed off for our family trip/ performance tour to Japan, where Becca and Matt were living. On the way home, we spent a few days in Washington and Oregon to do a bunch more concerts.
Two days after arriving home, Katie and I took the road trip to the Telluride Bluegrass festival. We were blown away with the quality and the quantity of great Musicians, Beer and Weed (though I’m proud that I cannot personally attest to the quality of the latter two). We got home just in time to do a few concerts before I left for an improv workshop in Boston at Berklee College of Music. I also got to meet up with some friends in the area. It was my first time going solo and I loved it!
Then for the final trip of the summer, I headed off (solo again) to Washington DC to pick up Kendra (6) and Michael (3) Blackwell to take them to their grandma in Ghana (their mother is a great friend and was my childhood nanny/ sister). To make a long story short, Ghana Airlines shut down, so I spent a week with Duc and some friends of the family living in the DC area. After a lot of negotiating on my dad’s part, I was able to get three one-way tickets and we headed out. Ghana is AMAZING! I don’t know how to describe it. The kids did really well adjusting and their relatives are great. I’ve never eaten such great crazy food, I’ve never seen such wonderful markets, I’ve never met such interesting people, I could go on! Anyway it was great.
In fact, the only problem was getting home. As the first day of school began to draw near, I still couldn’t find a ticket home. Finally I managed to find a first class ticket to Ethiopia through Cameroon (9 hours in the wrong direction), but when I got there, they didn’t have me booked on the connecting flight, so I fought it out– with the help of other passengers– and spent the night in a first class hotel in the middle of the shantytowns of Addis Ababa. Luckily my dad didn’t go crazy after spending hours calling airlines, hotels, etc. all over Africa trying to find out if I was alive.
I finally made it home via Italy, with a stop in New Jersey to visit Andi’s sister, Marcia. Then I came home and got to school at 6:45 the next morning for a Student Council meeting. So, by comparison, school hasn’t been too eventful. My ultimate Frisbee team won the championship. I go rock climbing a lot. I have cool friends. Oh, yeah... I play the cello a lot, too.
Oh, P.S. I’m in the presidency of my school’s Operation Smile club. This organization takes doctors around the world to correct cleft lips and cleft pallets. So, if you would like to give a kid the gift of a smile for Christmas, send donations to my address, and I promise I’ll forward the donations directly to service missions around the world.
P.P.S. Xan and Millie are SO cute! All I ever do is play with them! Ok. I’m done. Til next year. Happy Holidays from Liz!
Liz mentioned our new FiddleSticks Hymn CD. We got the idea when we played a week-long concert series in Nauvoo, and heard a bunch of old-time hymns from the early Mormon period there. We really had fun there – we felt an almost mystical connection to the place and really enjoyed it – maybe because we have lots of ancestors who were original settlers of Nauvoo and helped build the temple, which has now been restored. Anyway, we arranged and recorded a bunch of old style hymns, and we kind of like how it turned out. It’s called “Return to Nauvoo.” You can hear the music online at cdbaby.com/cd/fiddlesticks5.
Hey all, it’s Katie. I’m sitting in a smelly hot computer lab in Besançon, France as I type up my “Christmas letter paragraph.” Yep, I’m in France. But let me start before that. At the beginning of the year I was at Utah State University, way up north in Logan, being cold and studying mostly science classes for my Conservation and Restoration Ecology major (with minors in geology and French). Then we had a wonderful summer which included a Japan trip and lots of musical adventures. I played fiddle for the Hale Center Theater’s production of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. My friend Ben and I were the “live orchestra pit,” à la bluegrass, that was great fun. So after that I had about a month to gather my things, get a French student visa and fly out here. I first was on the northwest coast in Normandy for a month of intense language study, and then regular classes started at the Université de Franche-Comté in the northeast border, not far from Geneva, where I’ve gone for day trips a few times – as well as Paris, Lyon, Nice, Dijon... I am on the high carb diet here, and I’m not complaining. Croissants, tartes, breads, pastries...yummm. But I haven’t spent all my time eating, I did a bit of studying, too. And I made some fabulous friends. I come home the 19th of December, and I’m very ready to be home. Well, I wish you all a happy holiday season. Love Katie!!
Hi From Becca!
This year has been all about moving. Last December we graduated from BYU (Becca even survived a somewhat harrowing Student Teaching experience) we moved to Japan (decorated a rosemary plant with earrings, put all of our favorite stuff under our “tree” and it was Christmas!) and spent six months kind of teaching and mostly lolling about in the hot baths and glutting ourselves on yummy food. We took side trips to Korea and Okinawa, and toured with family in June, thanks to the wonderful kindness of the Miyakawas, the Sakurais, the Obas, the Uchidas, the Nodes, and Joe. Thank you and we love you! Then we returned to Utah to play with baby Xanny and co and pack our junk, then we drove it across Nevada to Albany, CA.
We took a brief detour before school started and went with Matt’s family to South Carolina to experience southern hospitality and hurricane warnings. Matt is an excellent graduate student at UC Berkeley, where he never fails to impress professors and professionals with his great attitude and skills in Grassland Ecology. We love Albany, and neighboring Berkeley. Becca is working for a wonderful company doing bookkeeping, and tutoring Japanese kids in English. We both are really enjoying the friendly Berkeley ward, Becca conducting the choir and Matt conducting genealogical research.
Thank you all for your friendship. We hope you have a prosperous, safe, and cozy year! Love, Becca and Matt
Andi gets the last word...
Of course I get the last word. Now that you’ve read all the dizzy list of Davis achievements let me fill you in on the number one most unbelievable accomplishment of the year. It isn’t the visits to six of the world’s seven continents, our new CD, the scholarships and leaps through higher education or even the miracle of a new life straight from our Heavenly Father. No, the real event of 2004 was Mark and Andi actually agreeing on a name for the baby. Talk about the war to end all wars. Let’s just say she was known during her nine months of gestation as “Heartburn Helga” and nearly ended up as “Baby Zega”. Two hundred seventy-three days of pregnancy to think about what to name our baby girl and it was only in the last 15 minutes of labor that something finally clicked. Camilla Sabine. We chose Camilla for the graceful power of Camilla Kimball. Sabine came from the mystic creativity of Nick Bantock’s Griffin and Sabine books. -- Merry Christmas, Love Andi
Best wishes and much love from us Davises to you all!
