Not so long ago, the writing of a song involved quite a few people.
First, there was a composer and a lyricist, often working together as a
team. Did these people also perform? Well, yes, but usually it was the
composer, playing an instrument, without a vocalist. The performers
were separate people, and the work was divided among the singers and
the orchestra members. When a recording was made, it was often a major
production, involving a crew of engineers and technicians. The records
were produced in a plant, an artist designed the covers, someone wrote
the jacket copy, printers printed the paper materials, and these were
wholesaled to stores all over the country, where record store clerks
sold them at retail.
Now, a modern singer-songwriter writes a song, makes up a tune, sings
it, records it using home equipment (often involving a computer
program), and posts it on the internet. If CDs are produced, it is
often done by the actual artist.
Is it any wonder so many people are unemployed?
