Now this is not the new banjo I'm getting--but wouldn't you just love this one with the hairy goatskin head? I sure would--but, of course, I'll be wearing a full choker of banjo restriction after my last lapse.
I'm trying to paste the photo of it--but if it doesn't come through--here is the link.
Hello,
Just got back from the Florida Folklife workshop hosted by the
Florida Humanities council in St. Pete. Although it was a real treat
learning about many ethnic cultures in Florida, we really did not
investigate the cigar industry at all and I did not find any
additional information on Florida cigar box banjos. However, we did
get to see many sides of Florida folklife that I had never seen
before. As far as music, the Laotian community had a small live band
of bamboo mouth harp and drum for their angel dancers. An African-
American bone sculptor had a group of neighborhood children studying
art and playing a drum circle.
Food and other experiences were awesome. If you want to look at
photos--feel free to bring up a group called
floridafolklife
that is right here on www.yahoogroups.com
Look at the photos under my name.
As far as banjo news--my leash of banjo restriction momentarily
snapped--and there is a nice surprise forming in Texas. Clues
include:
walnut, purple heart, Tony Pass birch rim, moon, skin, 12" :)
Love,
Mary Z. Cox

This Saturday, June 17,2006 at WESTSIDE PARK from 8 to 11pm. (Instruction is at 7:30 pm)
The GODS THIRD SATURDAY DANCE features PHYSICAL MEDICINE and Huntsville Alabama CALLER JANE EWING
Come to the Westside Center this Saturday Night for some hot music and calling!
Jane Ewing is one of the premier callers in the South and Physical Medicine will heal what ails ya! Doctor Chuck Levy will be fiddling, David Cook and Annie McPherson and Vic Call are the Doctors of rhythm, and an extra special guest is Mark Johnson, Doctor of banjo. Mark is the inventor of the Clawgrass style of banjo playing. This band is a former string band contest champion and will fix you right up out there on the dance floor! Come to listen and come to dance. If you want to learn how people entertained themselves before radio and tv, come at 7:30 for instruction. If you can walk, they will teach you how to begin old time dancing. It is fun and a good way to meet others. Chuck and Mark are also banjo instructors and I'm sure you can get plenty of banjo and fiddle related info from them. Chuck is also the new president of the newly formed Florida Banjo Society and will have some information about that organization.
There, now , don't stay sick and don't stay away. You have no excuse not to come to Westside Park in Gainesville at the intersection of 34th Street and 8th Ave.
We are working on both the official address/bank account. We hope to have things set up very soon.
If anyone can't wait, I will accept checks for $15 made out to Chuck Levy/Florida Banjo Society. I will cash them and transfer the $ to Pete Sucsy, our treasurer.
(this sounds fishy even to me...let the presidential corruption begin...)
My address: 426 SW 43RD Terrace, Gainesville, FL 32607
As new Taylor 410 with case asking $1200 or best offer. A fine example of what Taylor Guitars are all about. Nicely figured spruce top with bear claws in the wood. African rosewood sides and back. Beautiful clear tone.
1986 James Rydecki's Christophorus "Isolde" Celtic Harp. 34-String with F & C sharping levers. Walnut, stave back, gorgeous harp. Spruce top features Iris and Celtic Knot design. Extra set of strings handmade by Dragonwhispers. Tuning key. Original owner. Mr. Rydecki no longer builds harps. This is a rare beauty. Pictures on request. Asking $3,300 or best offer.
The June 17, Third Saturday Dance will feature Physical Medicine, former Fiddlers' Convention String Band Champs, and Huntsville Alabama's Jane Ewing calling. Chuck and the gang have an extra added attraction in store with the addition of nationally reknowned banjo wizard, Mark Johnson. Mark is the inventor of something called CLAWGRASS!!! Come and find out about it if you have an interest in banjo or music in general. People may ask you to dance, but it is ok to come and just listen. Chuck and Mark are very approachable and both are instructors of banjo. (You can probably sign up with them for a lesson or two.) They are also instructors at the Suwannee Old Time Music Camp, among other places.
If you are interested in learning something about how people entertained themselves before radio and TV, come to the dance for instruction at 7:30 pm. It is easy and a great chance to meet other folks.
Last evening, Pete and I had the pleasure of doing the sound for the Yazoo Kick Starts at the first Sunday afternoon dance. From all reports we got it right! The Yazoo Kick Starts are David and Marietta Massey, Bill Paine and Mike Stapleton. All are from our area, although David and Marietta are on temporary loan to the Tampa area. They'll be back in Micanopy some day. (Soon, we hope)
We are very happy to be in an area where a local band can come in and play the local dance and the level of musicianship is as good, if not better, than anything you can listen to on radio, Cd, TV or live anywhere in the world. They are all fabulous musicians who play together like they have been in the same room since they were born. Just Great!!!
This coming Sunday, June 11, is the monthly Old Time Dance at O'Leno State Park. The Flying Turtles String Band will be playing and Dennis Ricker will be calling. The dance is from 4 to 7pm with instruction at 3:30. We will be taking July and August off, so come to this one!
On Saturday, June 17, Physical Medicine will be ready to fix what ails ya! Come hear another great local band who are former String Band Champs at the Florida Fiddler's Convention. Joining them for this occasion is Mark Johnson. Mark is the guy who invented a style of banjo playing called Clawgrass. Chuck Levy will be playing fiddle. Chuck is a winner of the state banjo competition and this year placed second in the state fiddle competition. He is the new president of the Florida Banjo Society.Anyone interested in joining the newly formed organization, go to http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/floridabanjosociety/ .The rockin solid rhythym section is made up of Annie McPherson, David Cook and Vic Call. The dance will be at Westside Park, not at the Boltin Center, so mark it on your calendars!

No, you are incorrect. They can use the photos to recognize us coming down the
lane and then turn out all the lights and hide!
You will never be able to go to a music party again!!!!!
Luckily I had a 4PM workshop and was not in the photo. So I'm safe!
The rest of you had best burn the photos.

It's not Paranoia if they're really after you !!!!!

Hello,
If no one in the group photo objects--I would be happy to load the
group photo with a link to the Florida Banjo Society web page in my
slide show on Myspace.
www.myspace.com/maryzcox
I won't identify anyone by individual name in case kidnappers are
looking for you--but it will get the new webpage some visibility--if
you want it and no one in the photo has any problems with that. :)
Best wishes,
Mary Z. Cox
I loaded a bunch of banjo photos on a slide show in the "television section" and the sample music playing is my new theme song for Banjoholicism. My son, Gordy, wrote it and the lyrics fit my feelings about buying new banjos. (I try to control myself, but I escape ) He is on the vocals and guitar and he had me cut the banjo track.
You don't have to sign up with Myspace to see the photos and hear the music.
There is also a music page with three tracks from my new CD, Banjo Dreamin' Suwannee Nights at:
It's great to be associated with a bunch of banjo players so this has
to be the greatest association in the world...... Good luck to Chuck
Levy our preident and leader who is very enthusiastic about the music
and banjo's, I'm here for you 'Chuck'. I don't recognise some of the e-
mail name but I hope to get to see y'all soon and do some jammin'.
We are off the Mt. Airy NC this weekend for the Fiddle Convention,
maybe I'll see some of you there.
Happy to be associated with more banjo players...
Ron Whisler
It was great to see you this weekend. I thought you played well. You will have to do much worse for tomatoes. I am glad you were pleased with your prizes. I hope we can offer similar prizes in next year's contest.
Ross Beck from Tallahassee won first, while Tommy Bledsoe from St. Augustine came in second. I don't know who came in third.
> WHO WON THIS YEAR?
I'm not certain who took home the top honors but as I survived the contest and
walked away with two CDs, Mary Cox's and Faye Baird's, I figure I won!
The only disappointment was not collecting enough tomatoes for a good pot of
spaghetti. Do your think we need to teach the audience how to treat banjo
players?
Many thanks to Mary and Faye for donating their CDs. Both are wonderful.
Marg
Hi to everyone!!
Welcome to all of us new members!!
For those of you who were too busy with the banjo contest to make it
by the Steven Foster Museum to see the luthiers exhibit, I posted a
couple of pics on the photo gallery under Florida Banjos.
Marty
Hello there...
As you can see, we're setting up house here. So...come on in, poke
around, post a picture...what have you.
And how about that banjo contest?
Cheers!
