Advice for a flute pilgrimage?   Message List

I've got two passions: flute and traveling. The former I've been doing for 14
years.
The latter - 3 months. I'd love to do more of each but up until now, my two
interests have
always seemed mutually exclusive. (i.e. Grad school and a career in music =
little salary
and lots of debt, making travel impossible. Traveling the world like a vagabond
for a
couple years = missing out on years of practice, which puts a career in music
out of my
reach.)

BUT NOW, I have an idea. I can take a flute pilgrimage of sorts. I'll travel,
but with the
specific goal of finding flute teachers in all of the countries that I visit. I
realize that this
will mean making a lot of connections with teachers abroad prior to my travels.
I mean,
what highly qualified and busy flute teacher would just hand out lessons to a
smelly,
greasy american girl with little money, few possessions, and next to no
knowledge of the
local language?

That's where you wonderful folks come in. I know that many of you study with or
at least
know great flute teachers outside of the USA. I would greatly, greatly
appreciate any
recommendations or contact information you would be willing to share with me. I
also
welcome your own "flute-playing-in-other-cultures" stories. Thanks in advance
for all of
your help!

Cheers,
Julia
