Hey Flying Ace is back!! Great to hear from you Lynsey - So you're a
peri now - welcome to the big bad world!! What are you up to the rest
of the week?

It's always difficult establishing one's self. It takes a couple of
terms but then they stop being wary of you and resentful that you took
over from their teacher (Whether they liked or disliked the teacher -
kids don't like change) and then you start to see them blossom.
Keeping your tone light and not coming down on them too much ...
Saying things like I'm not going to nag you about practise because you
know what you should be doing. Talking of practise I sometimes use the
word training and relate it to their sport!

Clear statements about your expectations and what they might like to
get out of it! I am sure that you have thought of doing something they
like but still making sure it's prepared to your standards.

Anyway - good luck! I always found a good stock of (clean) jokes handy
too - they never laugh at them but you'll catch them telling their
friends in the lunch queue!

And keep in touch!!

Hi Debbie,

Can't the music teacher help with referrals on where to buy?

You should do web searches on how to buy a flute. Used flutes are sometimes
lemons like used cars - so read up on it.

Most music stores have rent to own programs and a wide selection of used
flutes.

Pawn shops are Ok but you should have an expert inspect the flute before you
buy in case is severely flawed or needs repairs.

http://www.usedflutes.com/ has many flutes. Some high end but also good
student models.

In Finland, Yamahas are seen as a good buy because of their reliability.
Sometimes good deals (around 200) on Yamahas come up on Usedflute.com. Again,
ask the flute tecaher before buying so you don't get ripped off.

   Good Luck!
   Mike

Hey, nice to be back. Nice to see Mostly and Dominy97 still around. Used
to be the username flyingace99, and was at uni at the time. Several
years ago! Ring any bells guys?! Anyway, high time I rejoined this
group. Well, an update, I am now working as a woodwind peri at a couple
of local high schools. Have been enjoying this weeks half term,
not looking forward to going back tomorrow however! Some of my kids are
doing really well, and some are a complete waste of space, and are quite
apathetic. Have tried all sorts to get their intrest back, but still
nada. Any suggestions would be welcome. The're mainly beginners up to Gr
1 standard. Thanks guys. Adios!

Hello and welcome -

Are you playing with a keyboard/piano/organ or is it just 2 flutes?

You could try Rimsky-Korsakov/Lynch: FLUTE OF THE BUMBLEBEE or
Mendelssohn: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM arranged for 2 flutes and
there's the Telemann, Mozart, Kohler and Kummer duets and there are
loads of arrangements of other things that will be suitable for
weddings.

There's also Armitage/Armitage: WEDDING MUSIC + CD .

Good luck - let us know how you get on!

Hello! I have just come across this group whilst searching for some
sheet musicto buy. A friend and I have been asked to play our flutes
at a wedding in the summer, but I am having problems finding something
suitable to play. Does anyone know any good pieces for two flute
players about grade 7?

Any help and advice gratefully received!

Thank you

I agree, when i first played it, not up to tempo of course, it
wasn't to bad, the tricky party was playing all of it up to tempo. I
never really got around to play the coda, so i think the end was a
bit more complicated, but it was a fun one

Ballade is really nice, and i think its pretty fun to play.
The flute i'm playing on now, (new as of august :-) ) is a Yamaha
Allegro 471, Im not really studying flute/music now, but i plan to
when i get to college, cuz right now im only a sophomore in High
school. I am in this class in my school where you get solo's from
the teacher and you practice all hour, and when you get a song down,
technically and the sound ( i can't think of the fancy term right
now ) he gives you a new solo. Like i said i've gone through like 3
and am on my fourth :)

I've taken to reviewing CDs on MusicWeb International, and have just

Great to hear all about you and what you are playing.

I know several members like the Chaminade and the Andante Pastoral and
Scherzettino is a particular favourite of mine. I don't know the
Perilhou's Ballade. Is it nice?

What kind of flute are you playing on? Make model? that sort of stuff?

Are you studying flute/music or something quite different?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

All the best

Does anyone know of any used flute sellers in Chicago, such as the
Flute Center in NY or the Flute Exchange in Boulder, CO? Or any
organization in that city that would carry a variety of professional
flutes? I'm in the process of getting a new flute and I'll also be
vacationing in Chicago in mid-October. Thought I should try some
flutes while I'm there. I'm particuarly looking to try some Powells,
   Brannens, and Miyazawas.

   Thanks in advance!

I was sent the following as part of an organisation involved in
music psychology research. I thought maybe some of you might like to
take part.

Keep tooting!!

Kaz

Dear colleagues,

We are looking for musicians with very good musical aural skills to
fill
in a questionnaire, which aims
* to improve our understanding of the origins of musical aural
skills,
and on this basis
* to develop better ways of teaching musical aural skills

If you are interested, please check out the questionnaire at
http://www-gewi.uni-graz.at/staff/parncutt/omas/.

If not, please forward this message to fellow musicians, friends,
colleagues, students, and teachers whom you consider to have very
good
musical aural skills. They will take it as a compliment!

Yours sincerely

I agree. I played one of these for a while when I was a student, and
it was fine. Condition is by far the most important thing, and
nothing will put a pupil off faster than a non-functioning
instrument. Make sure the teacher tries anything you buy in future!

Cheers, Dominy

Mike, I would say, as a student starting my third year, that the flute
should be fine for him. If he has any inclination to continue with the
flute into college, say in a marching band, or chamber orchestra, or
whatever, even jazz, it will be time enough to upgrade then. If he keeps
this flute in good condition, you'll be able to recover what you spent
initially, and only be out the maintenance that you'd have no matter
what he plays!
Upgrading when he's ready will be a pretty personal thing, depending on
what sound he's looking for. The Yamahas are said to have an "easy to
play, fat sound" which is good in ensemble playing.

That's my humble opinion.

Hi All!

I have a question.

I live in Finland. On a recent trip to the USA I bought a YFL-22
Yamaha flute for my son. I didn't know it is an older phased out
model. (OK - I know - I should have done more homework) It looks like
it is in good shape to me, i.e. no dents, finnish OK, around 4 yellow
pads. I have to take it to the repair shop Monday to get some new
pads and some of the keys adjusted.

He has an Armstrong before with a crooked mouthpeice that he started
with which he will play while the other is in the shop.

Here is my question: Is a 20 year old flute YFL-22 Yamaha like that
still going to be OK for an 11 year old starting his 3rd year? Or,
should I have it fixed, sell it, and buy a newer model.

Any advice is appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike

"They could be just music teachers." Heavens forbid that we might be judged
by mere music teachers! ;-)

Anyways - they will know how to play Mozart!!! There are plenty of resources
around that will tell you how to play this - I think I am correct saying
that the Appoggiaturas should be played on the beat. Of course it doesn't
matter what the resources say - there is no substitute for good taste!! So
use your instincts too.

Good luck for November and let us know how it goes.

because I'm a Brazilian.Take care.

I got a bit confused to start with becasue the fingering is kind of
reversed. Sounds cool putting your hand through the ring!! Certainly
could be a talking point when telling students about the development
of the flute! " And here we have gone full circle!" ...... ;-)

Enjoy
