Not sure, since I'm doing the same thing and it works great.

One thing though -- I've found that many of the sounds I've tried to stuff
through my 777 were pretty much unnoticable unless the filter cutoff was
pretty high.

i plug a line-level signal into the "filter in" jack...make sure the sub a/ext level is up, make sure the filter gain is up, make sure the volume's...
