I visited the recording studio (the Cutting Rooms,
Abraham Moss Centre, Crescent Road, Crumpsall,
Manchester) yesterday. Abraham Moss Centre is very
near Woodlands Road Metrolink station on the map, but
the walk to get there from the MetroLink station is
quite long and hard to describe. Ask or go by taxi if
you have difficulty. If you are driving or going by
bus, Crescent Road meets the A665 where (or roughly
where) Cheetham Hill Road turns into Bury Old Road. [I
can help with transport costs, as part of my
contribution to setting up the band, if necessary.]
The Cutting Rooms are quite difficult to find within
the Centre, which is one of the sites of City College,
but ask (e.g. at reception) if you need to.
The studio has a lot of facilities, including multiple
rooms and machines of various sorts; they do have
keyboards and guitars (including bass guitars) as well
as a drum kit - I should have checked when I phoned on
Friday. They are some sort of community facility, so
they are very good value (£30 per hour including the
use of an engineer, and the engineer and somebody else
will be able to help out in playing some of the
instruments if insufficient musicians turn up...)
I've paid a deposit of £30, and they'll only charge
for every hour we actually use; I booked us from 10am
until 5pm to be on the safe side, but they booked us
in until 6.
I've been putting the message out to some people in
Manchester, including anti-G8 activists, and I'm not
sure whether to expect famous musicians/singers,
ordinary ones, both or neither to turn up! We'll
manage anyway...
The one person I think is really essential for this
project apart from myself is somebody who I have
plugged as a potential member of Galaxia from its
inception in my mind, and I have let people on the
internet know I want her in the band - and why (visit
http://www.socialiststeve.me.uk/martine.htm). That
person is Martine McCutcheon. Perhaps aided by her
finding out about my stuff, her politics are improving
(e.g. taking part in two episodes of the forthcoming
TV series about the British secret services, "Spooks")
so I don't think that her playing a leading role in
the world socialist revolution is as bizarre as many
would think!!!
I've got the sheet music for "Do They Know It's
Christmas?" (both versions), essential for "Do They
Know It's G8 Time?". We'll have to improvise on
segments of existing tracks (except for John Lennon's
"Working Class Hero") on "The Revolution Starts Now!",
but I know how the tunes go so it shouldn't be too
difficult...
Anyway, that'll do for now. For those who want to
participate, I look forward in seeing you on Thursday.
Everyone else, stay tuned for further developments
including the tracks when we've recorded them (as MP3
files and probably other formats)...
