How the brain helps or hinders the struggle for socialism   Message List

I include below my latest document, which I have produced copies of to hand out as a double-sided A4 leaflet. It is a massively modified version of the start of the old version of my document called "The brain, politics and music", cutting out the musical content, which I have left in the latest version (6) of the latter. Both documents can be found at: www.socialiststeve.me.uk/documents.htm.

This document contains my current opinions regarding how people’s brains work. Most attempts at this do so in terms of low-level concepts such as neurons firing and the balance of chemicals within the brain, but it is only through adopting a high-level approach like mine that it is possible to understand why people behave in the way they do, especially with regard to the future of the planet. From a scientific point of view, it is necessary to test out hypotheses such as those in this document, which is something I do all the time in my interactions with others and my reasoning about why I have acted in the way I have.

There are two key classes in society: the working class and big business. People can be on one side of the class struggle or the other (LEFT or RIGHT) or they can be NEUTRAL. This may be reflected by a variable within his or her mind, which can take one of those three values and be subject to change as a result of interactions with others or deductions, or it can be “hard-wired” in the arrangement of neurons within the brain (and therefore remain constant unless a dramatic restructuring takes place). LEFT-wing people are on the side of the working class and are either revolutionary socialists (in which case they are in favour of a socialist world based on cooperation – the only way of ending poverty, famines, unemployment, homelessness, environmental destruction, deaths from preventable diseases, discrimination and of course wars – and realise that a sudden change is needed to achieve such a society) or reformists (in which case they are either in favour of a socialist world but wrongly think that it can be achieved by a series of gradual reforms or merely generally in favour of reforms which benefit the working class under the so-called “mixed economy”, i.e. capitalism, a society based on competition). RIGHT-wing people are on the side of big business and are reactionaries (who are generally in favour of counter-reforms which benefit big business, or middle class people at the expense of the working class, in this capitalist society). NEUTRAL people include some of those who do not understand such political concepts (perhaps because they are too young) or who have no interest in politics. However, I have occasionally come across animals and birds that have clearly adopted sides in the class struggle (normally the working class, i.e. LEFT); they may have developed much greater intelligence than scientists credit them with in order to understand political concepts but I think that they merely have some way of analysing the friendliness of people and other animals and birds, and regard those on one side as good and those on the other side as evil. Most working class people are LEFT or NEUTRAL and most big businessmen and women are RIGHT, but there are many exceptions. Middle class people may also take either side. In a pre-revolutionary situation (when a socialist revolution may be about to take place), most NEUTRAL people will take one side or the other.

Note that this categorisation of people reflects the actual side everyone is on at any moment in time rather than the political views that they seem, on the surface, to believe in. There are many infiltrators within organisations on both sides who at times act against the interests of those organisations. Some but not all of them realise the role they are playing, particularly those who are members of conspiratorial organisations, some of which are part of the capitalist state like MI5 and the CIA, and other more secret ones are not (some of which are on the side of the working class and trying to change society for the better).

This categorisation is the most important determiner of your behaviour in whatever you do (including in your job or education, hobbies, friendships and love life, as well as in political activities). People on the same side generally cooperate with each other and people on opposite sides generally compete. NEUTRAL people tend to cooperate with people on both sides. Note that much of the time revolutionaries cooperate with reformists; after all, genuine revolutionary socialists tend to be the best fighters for reforms under capitalism.

There are multiple processes operating within everyone’s mind at any point in time, including one that I call the “main process” and which generates the conscious thoughts that the person is aware of. Note that the thinking done by the main process is much more complicated than the conscious thoughts that people are aware of; such thoughts are the result of thinking done by the main process in the subconscious and decisions are actually taken some tenths of a second before people think they are making them – this delay has been measured as reported in a TV series presented by Susan Greenfield. Other processes can be generated in and usually operate within the subconscious but they have the capability of interrupting the main process. Subconscious processes are needed to deal with interactions, both via the senses (such as seeing something and interrupting the main process when it is recognised) and performing repetitive tasks (such as walking). A Channel 5 TV programme called “The World’s Greatest Conspiracy Theories” revealed mind control as number one (according to number of websites discussing it), and I believe that it is used by people and machines on both sides, probably acting like an additional sense which generates processes in the mind being controlled. Subconscious processes are also needed to construct and modify the memory, including a model of the past and present state of the world (to some degree of complexity).

The main process within your mind uses the world model in order to predict the future and determine what you need to do to achieve your desired outcomes – with regard to the future society that you are in favour of (unless you are NEUTRAL) as well as the happiness of yourself, your family and friends, and perhaps your race, religion and nationality – for achieving all sorts of minor sub-goals in day to day tasks as well as the overall goals of your life. This was dubbed “psychohistory” by the science fiction author Isaac Asimov in his famous Foundation series, when applied to achieving a galactic revolution, and (in “Foundation’s Edge” and “Foundation and Earth” which extended the original trilogy that had right–wing plots to get past the censors) it had a very left–wing ending to the galaxy called “Galaxia”, which I am now using as the name for my revolutionary socialist band (see www.galaxiamusic.org). Psychohistory can be performed on computers as well as brains – e.g. by using my language SDML (see www.socialiststeve.me.uk/sdml.htm). In fact, I believe that the strongest conspiratorial organisations on both sides of the class struggle use SDML (or a more advanced language based on the research I did developing SDML due to limitations of my language in terms of speed and memory capacity) to perform psychohistorical modelling and try to outwit the other side.

The correctness of decisions you make via psychohistorical modelling using your brain is limited both by what you know and the time needed by your brain to make decisions. Consequently people make many mistakes in terms of achieving their goals. I particularly make mistakes when other processes are repeatedly interrupting my mind’s main process as a result of many stimuli and I have allowed these other processes to build up rather than resolving them quickly.

We need broad socialist parties led by revolutionaries

I mentioned above that most of the time revolutionary socialists unite with reformists; both are LEFT-wing. The working class around the world should form political parties based around such unity, with revolutionaries playing a leading role. The Scottish Socialist Party (SSP) is the best example of such a party anywhere in the world at present. The SSP correctly unites around reformist demands and has a number of platforms, mainly of revolutionaries, including the International Socialist Movement which has members in many leading positions. Unfortunately, however, revolutionaries in the SSP tend to hide their distinct politics from most people who are not already in the party and the SSP comes across to most people as reformist. They do not answer where the money will come from; the answer being that the working class needs to take over all the big companies only compensating pension funds and perhaps small shareholders with proven need. Revolutionaries should be encouraged to put forward their own views in the SSP newspaper and on leaflets, mentioning the platforms that they are members of.

Respect members are even more guilty of hiding their politics, usually failing to mention socialism at all when they speak at meetings or demonstrations, and only mention socialism on leaflets as one of several things that Respect stands for. Respect’s problems have been exacerbated by George Galloway appearing on Celebrity Big Brother. The most promising moves towards a party like the SSP (only bigger and better) are now the Respect Party Platform (www.respectpartyplatform.org) and the Campaign for a New Workers’ Party (www.cnwp.org.uk), which was set up by the Socialist Party and has a conference on Sunday the 19th of March in London (University of London Union, Malet Street, WC1).

There is a need for revolutionaries to unite together within such broad socialist parties, and I have created (initially as one person organisations) Revolutionary Platforms of both the SSP and Respect (see www.revolutionaryplatformofthessp.org and www.revolutionaryplatformofrespect.org).
