And yet another music year begins... My first Top 20 for the first week of my
2010 music year includes a brand new #1 and debuts from Depeche Mode ("Perfect")
and Snow Patrol (a mellow cover of INXS's "New Sensation"). The prime mover is
"All over the world" by Pet Shop Boys.

If a song climbs on this chart and I'm still charting the song the first week of
2010, then that song will not be on my "Top 100 of 2009" year-end recap. For
this reason, next to most of the songs you will see either (2009) or (2010).

(2009) means that the song has aleady peaked and will be on my "Top 100 of 2009"
chart. (2010) means that the song will probably still be charting in January,
so it won't be eligible for my "Top 100 of 2009".

And there are three songs that don't have anything because it's too hard to call
right now. Although these three songs climb, there is a chance they could peak
and be gone by January...

MY TOP 20 for the week ending December 5, 2009:

#20. "Funhouse" -- P!nk (down 4) (former #1 for 2 weeks) (2009)

#19. "New Sensation" -- Snow Patrol (DEBUT) (2010)

#18. "Perfect" -- Depeche Mode (DEBUT) (2010)

#17. "What You Get" -- Junior Caldera feat. Billy Bryan (up 3) (2010)

#16. "Bulletproof" -- La Roux (down 5) (2009)

#15. "All over the world" -- Pet Shop Boys (up 4) (2010)

#14. "Celebration" -- Madonna (down 4) (former #1 for 6 weeks) (2009)

#13. "Who Says" -- John Mayer (up 2) (2010)

#12. "Bad Romance" -- Lady Gaga (up 2) (2010)

#11. "Wonderful" -- Gary Go (up 2)

#10. "Wonder" -- Jack Savoretti (up 2) (2010)

# 9. "Heartbeat Radio" -- Sondre Lerche (down 3) (2009)

# 8. "Fireflies" -- Owl City (up 1)

# 7. "Welcome All Again" -- Collective Soul (down 3) (2009)

# 6. "Scarred" -- Kevin Rudolf (up 2) (2010)

# 5. "Make Me" -- Janet Jackson (up 2) (2010)

# 4. "True Love 1980" -- Ash (up 1)

# 3. "One Day" -- Jack Savoretti (down 1) (2009)
(former #1 for 2 weeks)

# 2. "Beautiful people" -- Pet Shop Boys (down 1) (2009)
(former #1 for 2 weeks)

and my new #1 song is...

# 1. "I Don't Believe You" -- P!nk (up 2) (2010)

Songs that fell off:

"Day Tripping" -- Sharleen Spiteri
Peaked at #2 (for 2 weeks) / 17 weeks on chart

"We Are Golden" -- MIKA
Peaked at #6 / 11 weeks on chart

From Billboard Magazine today:

Mayer will likely relinquish the Billboard 200 throne next week as Susan
Boyle's "I Dreamed a Dream" album is set to debut in the top slot. Industry
sources say that the set could sell as much as 600,000 copies by week's end on
Sunday night (Nov. 29). It even has a chance of netting the best sales week of
the year for an album, which is currently held by the debut of Eminem's
"Relapse" with 608,000.

Whitney drops to #4 this week, allowing the PSB to pull in to the #1
spot with "Pandemonium", their 12th #1 here I think. I am not sure yet
if they will still be there next week with Aurora's "Love Resurrection"
still sounding real good to me. I also recently discovered I may have a
"default #1" on my hands in a week or so if I can't make songs move
up quicker. Sophie, John Mayer and Pixie Lott are the best contenders
below the Top 10 so gotta get them moving quickly. Lady Gaga has
the best move this week, jumping up 7 spaces to #19. Four songs
debut, including Bloc Party and Weezer.  Peace & Happy Thanksgiving!

Based on physical sales and the pre-order record Susan Boyle set at
Amazon, I believe Susan Boyle will beat everyone and be #1 next week.
I've read as such already in a number of articles saying Susan may
sell up to 500,000 copies which would give her the biggest first week
of the year for any artist.

Lady Gaga's "Fame Monster" and the "Fame Monster Deluxe Edition" are sitting
atop the best selling albums taking up the #1 and #2 positions. She is followed
closely by Susan Boyle's "I Dreamed A Dream", Rihanna's "Rated R" and Adam
Lambert's "For Your Entertainment". If she maintains these positions look for
her to do with this album what she couldn't do with "The Fame". Go #1 on the
Billboard 200 next week.

I have not been a big fan of Adam. Although I do believe he is talented, his
singing
actually gets on my nerves most of the time. I don't get into the whole
"screaming/
shrieking" thing which is usually how he performs. I did not enjoy his
performance
on the AMA's and it had nothing to do with his oral sex simulation. There is
nothing
wrong with pushing the envelope; I am all for that as a matter of fact, but I
just believe
he is getting carried away with his popularity and is too 'over the top' for my
tastes.
I've gone back & forth on "For Your Entertainment" in the last few weeks but now
I
know I won't be charting this one. I am still interested in hearing his cd.
Peace!!  David

First they censor Adam Lambert's performance for the West Coast Feed on the AMAs
and now they have abruptly canceled the Good Morning American appearance on
Wednesday morning. Now is performing on CBS' The Early Show instead. Very much a
double standard!! I'm sure that Adam is loving this attention.

I love his new CD and especially the song he worked on with Lady Gaga called
"Fever". Go out buy this CD. Support this very important artist.

Did anyone else notice that Whitney Houston sang live the Freemasons edit
version of "Million Dollar Bill" on the Dancing with the Stars Finale tonight?
It's such a much better version of the song. It certainly would be nice if
radio would start playing that version!!!

It starts about the 4 minute mark in this YouTube:

Siobhan Fahey returns from the dark side of pop

From Bananarama and Shakespears Sister to break-ups and breakdowns, Siobhan
Fahey is back from the dark side of pop
Fleur Britten

Siobhan Fahey is hunting for wood. She leaps up from the sofa in her friend's
photographic studio, growing increasingly frantic about finding anything
that remotely passes as wooden. "Touch wood," she exhales eventually, "I
really do think I've been set free."

The newly blonde Fahey, founder member of Bananarama and Shakespears Sister,
has finally moved on from the "intolerable anguish" of depression that has
plagued her since she was 12. Also gone is the requisite goth-black hair and
the sun-hating (on hot days, she says, she used lie in cold baths all
afternoon - now she finds the cold restricts her joy). "I am devoting myself
to making myself happy," she says in a smoke-worn voice, now quite mellow
again. The catalyst was, she says, her parents dying in 2006. "I still don't
quite understand it, so it scares me," she shrugs, "but it's been some sort
of lightening up. Maybe it's a release from my old identity."

Whatever it is, this "deep shift" seems to radiate through her every cell.
She looks shockingly gorgeous, and few of her 51 years. Her petite frame is
poured into skinny jeans and a smattering of Westwood separates, topped with
a blonde Ziggy Stardust mullet. Her strong, feline bone structure fills out
an incredibly well-preserved complexion. Nor does her music sound like that
of a 51-year-old. "Sometimes, I do think I should have made an album full of
ballads for the over-forties," she smiles wryly. That would be the sensible,
commercial option. "But that's not who I am." Last week, she bounced back
after a five-year recording hiatus with Songs from the Red Room, the fourth
Shakespears Sister album and Fahey's second without Marcella Detroit since
their bitter split in 1993. No drippy ballads, just a burst of catchy yet
cosmic, intelligent pop: "I just refuse to stop being myself," she says
gently.

So she hangs out with her kids, Sam, 21, and Django, 18 (from her marriage
to the music maestro Dave Stewart), and their friends. They go to festivals
together (she's attended Coachella in LA for the past four years), and even,
she announces matter-of-factly, takes magic mushrooms with them. She spends
three months of the year in LA, visiting Sam, a (perhaps inevitably)
"insanely talented" musician. So does she get Botoxed when she's there? She
frowns (because she can): "I still feel like I'm 21. And it goes hand in
hand - you look the way you think." It runs in the family, she claims,
adding that her mother left "a good-looking corpse" after dying of a brain
tumour, aged 72. Three months previously, her mother had been in Ibiza,
"behaving like a teenager, drinking and dancing all night" (despite the new,
sunnier outlook, Fahey's gothic humour twinkles on). "She looked about 55,
maximum," she says. "All the nurses would gather round her bed and say,
'Jay-sus! [she adopts her parents' Tipperary accent] Look at the age on
that!'"

Her father's death three months later precipitated Fahey's "gap year", spent
mostly in the LA sunshine, turning around her dark days. Fahey's father, "a
caner", died with dementia, having become completely dependent on his wife
after 50 years of marriage. "He was the classic romantic Irishman," she
recalls. "He loved language, but he was wild and reckless." Did Fahey
inherit that? Her hard-partying days are well documented. "Yeah, yeah," she
smiles. "But his example taught me caution."

One senses that life's hard knocks have taught Fahey caution; there's now a
measuredness, a calm sense of reason, to the old punk soul. And those
knocks? There was the stint in a clinic for depression after ending up in a
wheelchair with an agonising ruptured disc. "You know the body is very much
linked to your mental state, and in 1993 the strain of my life took its
toll," she says. There was the gradual breakdown of her marriage. "We were
completely and utterly different people," she explains. "We really didn't
know each other well enough when I got pregnant and I'm sure we'd never have
got married otherwise." Plus there was Stewart's reported hypochondria, "his
constant attention-seeking behaviour that I found irritating".

This was fatefully timed with the grim Shakespears Sister split: "Once I'd
made Marcy an equal partner there was a terrible ego struggle, as she wanted
to be the front person in the band that I'd started. I really hate
confront-ation and she was very confrontational." Was there a terrible
showdown? "Several!" she snorts. "She was constantly at it. I was like, oh
Christ! I was just counting down the gigs where I didn't have to see her."
By 1993, Fahey was a solo artist (a place she "didn't embrace", she says
with understatement) and, by 1996, a single mother. She lights up a Silk Cut
inside the studio in gracious rebellion: "The whole thing unravelled and
turned into a nightmare. They were a difficult few years." She pauses,
adding: "I think that depression is closely linked to worrying about whether
you're a bad person or not."

Fahey's self-esteem was crushed in early childhood, she believes, as an
Irish girl living in Britain. Her father moved the whole family over,
including her two younger sisters, when he joined the British Army. "I grew
up on an army estate and it was like, 'You're a paddy, you're thick.' I
absorbed some pretty negative messages about myself." But then Fahey feels
that she never belonged in Ireland either: "My Irish cousins don't recognise
me as Irish. I'm this weird hybrid." So what does she feel in her core?
Fahey erupts into laughter. "Keren and Sara [her Bananarama bandmates] used
to laugh at me, saying I wasn't cool because I'd be like, 'Hi, how are you?'
with everyone instead of, 'Uh, whatever'. In my heart and soul I feel Irish.
I find the English very cold." So did her self-esteem improve with this big
shift? There's an improvement, she says, "but when it's woven into your
fabric, you have consciously to check your thoughts all the time". Hence
performing as Shakespears Sister when she alone is Shakespears Sister - it's
a platform to hide behind. "Besides," she chuckles, "Siobhan Fahey is a
bitch to Google."

Meanwhile, the Anglo-Irish hybridisation continues. Fahey still lives in
London, staying with one of her sisters or her artist/DJ/drummer boyfriend
of eight years (she rents out her own place, saying she can't live on her
back catalogue alone). She and her boyfriend mostly live apart because that's
what seems to work. (It's another case of Fahey defying categorisation:
"When you've been married and had kids, it's like, why do you need
a prescribed, conventional life?") Meanwhile, she still likes to visit
Ireland - Tipperary, Dublin, where her cousins live, and Clare, where her
uncle lives. "And since my parents passed, I have been visiting the places I
never got to go to before." Such as Dingle, her mental fantasy of Ireland.
And in LA, she started to learn Irish, her father's first language. "Part of
me believed that if I learnt Gaelic, it would unlock the cultural psyche,"
she says, because, culturally, she feels British. But, she confesses, she's
some way from finding the key in her studies: "It even takes a while before
you can pronounce what's written on the page".

It seems that Fahey the lone outsider is keen to hold on to both these
national identities. To her, even fame has its benefits, making her no more
the stranger: "It's comforting to be known, like someone who has lived in
the same village all their life. As a child I moved every couple of years,
so I always felt invisible." The one thing there's no room for, however, is
depression: "I want to close that chapter," she sighs. "I don't want that
tag anymore. It's like the wind is behind me somehow now." Touch wood.

First they censor Adam Lambert's performance for the West Coast Feed on the AMAs
and now they have abruptly canceled the Good Morning American appearance on
Wednesday morning. Now is performing on CBS' The Early Show instead. Very much
a double standard!! I'm sure that Adam is loving this attention.

I love his new CD and especially the song he worked on with Lady Gaga called
"Fever". Go out buy this CD. Support this very important artist.

I have no problem with the fact That Jay-Z's "Empire Stae Of Mind" Hit #1
based on the fact that airplay for the song rose a bit as did the sales. Nor
do I question this past week "Tik Tok" placing higher than Bad Romance as
Lady Gaga took a drop in initial first week sales on the single, but now as
She has rebounded to #1 on the sales chart I am sure you will see a major
Jump on this week's chart from #11 to either #1 or #2. I am hoping for #1 of
course, but based on Jay-Z' increased sales he could still beat her out. It
will probably come down to airplay. I actually don't think "Empire' is as
popular as "Bad Romance" especially after the AMA awards Sunday night. GaGa
got a better response than Jay-Z. He looked at her and clapped like as if to
say "What the Hell was that".

My problem with the Billboard chart foes back to 1991 when they started
using soundscan and Broadcast data systems. Now these accurately portray the
data they are collecting. But the problem the data isn't always correct. I
argue that playlists should still be used as part of the chart creation
process. BDS just tracks what the radio stations are playing, not what
listeners are actually requesting. Furthermore with so many radio stations
in the US being owned by fewer and fewer people it makes it harder to break
new songs as in the past when so many artists could work their way out of a
region to do well in the rest of the country. Music directors are having too
much control over too many stations, thus limiting the range of music one
gets to hear. As a result of this some people knowing how BDS works can
easily direct the success of many a song.

Soundscan also has it's problems now that we are in the digital age. There
should be an official single release from the studios for songs and any
other songs from an album can still be downloaded but only if someone buys
the entire album. As you say we can't deny Taylor Swift's popularity, but
how many songs never make the Hot 100 because of allowing all these track to
chart. And that brings me to another point. I recently wrote Billboard (They
will probably ignore me) and told them I thought the Hot 100 should revert
to reflecting what is being played on Top 40 radio. I suggest making the Hot
100, the Top 100 which would be a more accurate description. The Pop 100,
which is now called Pop Songs, is a more accurate reflection of what is
popular at Top 40 radio. My problem with the Hot 100 is all the Country and
Hip Hop acts that probably wouldn't make the chart if not all the data were
being thrown in together. It seems lazy to me because they would then have
to determine where sales came from. But in this case I think you could
easily say that the song would need to have some Pop airplay to qualify.

I always like looking at the year end charts because they usually confirm I
was correct about where a song should have peaked. "Should've Been Would've
Been #1 songs" are a little hobby of mine and I am always putting a new list
together. It usually confirms my belief that a song that should've hit #1,
actually was popular enough to be considered a #1. Over the years the charts
have gotten more an more and more incorrect even with all the technology
that should produce a more accurate chart. I think that many people have
found ways to manipulate the data to their own ends. I have heard that
Billboard is supposedly using the iLike program found on Facebook to put
part of the chart together. Now there is a program that could really be
manipulated by someone to change the direction of a song. Billboard really
need to revaluate it's process for compiling chart data. Although a few
people like Taylor Swift & Carrie Underwood should be having Top 40 hits,
others like Reba McEntire should not. The whole Hot 100 needs a serious
overhaul as it is becoming increasingly more inaccurate. Not to put down
Taylor Swift, but she is not that popular with typical top 40 listeners as
the chart would seem to imply.

All charts have their problems whether in the US, UK or anywhere else. But
when you see two songs spend a combined 6 month run at #1, when other songs
should have gone to #1 during that time, then you know something is wrong.
When a song shoots to #1 then a week later begins a precipitous fall down
the charts, you can guess that song shouldn't have hit #1 in the first place
The problem with the digital age is that it has allowed many a song to
chart much higher than what they should have, allow them to make much larger
jumps and debuts. The true determination of whether the high chart position
is correct is if the song has legs. But with many a song this is not the
case.

With that said I am hoping that Thursday's Hot 100 has Bad Romance" sitting
at #1. If not it should be two. If it isn't either than I question their
tracking methods anymore simply based on how quickly the song is being added
to Pop airplay and the Fact that she has been #1 for almost two weeks now.
We will see
Bruce

There are also messages posted at Billboard.com where someone is questioning
how Jay-Z and Alicia Keys can be #1 on the Hot 100... and there is also
another post from someone else questioning how Kei$ha can be higher than
Lady GaGa on the "Hot 100" when Lady GaGa is higher on both the sales and
airplay charts. Obviously, people who follow the charts closely know when
something doesn't seem quite right...

I remember when Billboard changed their rule and started allowing songs that
didn't have a single to chart on the "Hot 100". I was glad that they
finally changed the rule, but the change in the rule allowed airplay-only
songs to chart on the "Hot 100" only if they were also charting on the "Hot
100 Airplay" chart. In other words, singles not available to buy in stores
were not eligible for the "Hot 100" unless the song was receiving some
pretty decent radio airplay points.

I think that Billboard might need to re-visit this policy again in the age
of the digital download. Do I think that digital download sales should
count for songs that are actually being promoted as the artist's current or
next single, or songs that are getting radio airplay? Absolutely. But why
should digital downloads count for those songs that aren't a single, and
probably never will be? Why should a song benefit from large digital
download sales when the song has absolutely no radio airplay and the record
label has no current plans to promote it? In that case, I think the song
should only be eligible to chart on the "Hot Digital Songs" chart, but it
should not be eligible for the "Hot 100".

Case in point: Taylor Swift. Now, I'm not saying that Taylor is not
talented, and there's no denying how popular she is at the moment. But 13
songs in the Top 40 of the "Hot 100" just because her record label chose to
release the new tracks from the re-issue of her album as individual
downloads? I can see counting the download points for whatever songs are
being promoted as singles, but I don't think that the other songs should be
charting on the "Hot 100" at all. I would be perfectly fine with her
breaking chart records on the "Hot Digital Songs" chart, but she shouldn't
be doing it on the "Hot 100".

Again, this is jut my "humble opinion" too, and I mean no disrespect to any
Taylor Swift fans. But it just saddens me that Michael Jackson's, Janet
Jackson's, and Bruce Springsteen's long-standing, very impressive
achievement of having seven Top 40 singles from their albums now just seems
insignificant when Taylor has now had 13.... And long-time chart geeks like
myself could probably very easily name all seven Top 40 singles from the
THRILLER, BORN IN THE USA, RHYTHM NATION, and BAD albums, and those albums
were all released in the '80s! Twenty years from now, I highly doubt that I
will be able to name the 13 from FEARLESS...

My favorite AMA performances from Sunday night:

The Adam Lambert and Jennifer Lopez performances were edited by the time the
West Coast feed happened, which pisses me off (in the case of Adam). Jennifer
fell and they edited that out as well. But they cut out the oral sex simulation
from Adam's performance and of course he is all the topic of all talk shows on
Monday morning which is exactly what he wanted. You have to applaud someone
pushing the envelope !!

The Top Ten X-Factor finalists did a Charity Single for the Great Ormond Street
Hospital for Children and it is the new #1 song in the UK this week. It's a

In the UK (I used to live there), physical singles still make up a huge amount
of the total sales for singles. You can hardly find a physical single in the US
anymore, but if you go to an HMV in the UK the entire front of the store are
physical CD singles. So you can't judge chart placement just on iTunes there
YET. I suspect that may change over time but not as quickly as it has in the
US.

And in responding to Dan's comments on the Hot 100 rules, I agree that it seems
unfair about singles marketed versus just digital releases, but I actually think
the chart is a better reflection of real sales and airplay. Before it was
almost totally doctored by false airplay reports etc. Then when SoundScan came
into play and sales scanning tracking systems it became a lot more realistic.
The bigger problem is not how they measure it but the fact that probably more
than 50% of singles are downloaded illegally and that is obviously never tracked
at all. That is one reason why you are seeing record companies releasing tracks
one at a time or CD's faster and faster because of the significant amount of
tracks downloaded not even counted at all via illegal downloads.

But the new chart rules and especially the new Billboard 200 album chart rules
that will begin for next week's Billboard album chart are more accurate in
measuring real popularity and sales than ever before. The only debate now is
the % airplay versus sales should play in the Hot 100.=

There are also messages posted at Billboard.com where someone is questioning how
Jay-Z and Alicia Keys can be #1 on the Hot 100... and there is also another post
from someone else questioning how Kei$ha can be higher than Lady GaGa on the
"Hot 100" when Lady GaGa is higher on both the sales and airplay charts.
Obviously, people who follow the charts closely know when something doesn't seem
quite right...

I remember when Billboard changed their rule and started allowing songs that
didn't have a single to chart on the "Hot 100". I was glad that they finally
changed the rule, but the change in the rule allowed airplay-only songs to chart
on the "Hot 100" only if they were also charting on the "Hot 100 Airplay" chart.
In other words, singles not available to buy in stores were not eligible for the
"Hot 100" unless the song was receiving some pretty decent radio airplay points.

I think that Billboard might need to re-visit this policy again in the age of
the digital download. Do I think that digital download sales should count for
songs that are actually being promoted as the artist's current or next single,
or songs that are getting radio airplay? Absolutely. But why should digital
downloads count for those songs that aren't a single, and probably never will
be? Why should a song benefit from large digital download sales when the song
has absolutely no radio airplay and the record label has no current plans to
promote it? In that case, I think the song should only be eligible to chart on
the "Hot Digital Songs" chart, but it should not be eligible for the "Hot 100".

Case in point: Taylor Swift. Now, I'm not saying that Taylor is not talented,
and there's no denying how popular she is at the moment. But 13 songs in the
Top 40 of the "Hot 100" just because her record label chose to release the new
tracks from the re-issue of her album as individual downloads? I can see
counting the download points for whatever songs are being promoted as singles,
but I don't think that the other songs should be charting on the "Hot 100" at
all. I would be perfectly fine with her breaking chart records on the "Hot
Digital Songs" chart, but she shouldn't be doing it on the "Hot 100".

Again, this is jut my "humble opinion" too, and I mean no disrespect to any
Taylor Swift fans. But it just saddens me that Michael Jackson's, Janet
Jackson's, and Bruce Springsteen's long-standing, very impressive achievement of
having seven Top 40 singles from their albums now just seems insignificant when
Taylor has now had 13.... And long-time chart geeks like myself could probably
very easily name all seven Top 40 singles from the THRILLER, BORN IN THE USA,
RHYTHM NATION, and BAD albums, and those albums were all released in the '80s!
Twenty years from now, I highly doubt that I will be able to name the 13 from
FEARLESS...

"Beautiful people" by Pet Shop Boys is at #18 and at #28...

Hey,

Hope everyone has had a great week.

Here is my latest top 50. The full chart can be found here
http://delenn35.wordpress.com/

I have no change at the top again this week though I think that could change
next week. I have 4 new entries into the top 50 with Lady Gaga accounting for
half of them.

This week I have included and mp3 of the song at number 42 by Australian dance
act, Parralox. Their single "Hotter" is great electro dance with lots of 80s
elements and fun lyrics. The link is at the end of the chart.

Here is an example of when I have issues with how a chart company put a
chart together. Whether it be the Billboard Hot 100 or the UK Chart. Happy
was the #1 best selling single on iTunes UK the whole week. So how then do
The Black Eyed Peas end up with the UK #1. I don't buy where the songs
