Pop music publisher dies at age 79
The Associated Press - ATLANTA
Bill Lowery, the first person to be inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of
Fame, has died.
Lowery, 79, of Atlanta died Tuesday of cancer at Haven House Hospice. The
body has been cremated.
For 52 years, the Lowery Group published music hits such as the rock classic
"Be-Bop-a-Lula," country hits "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" and
"Games People Play" and the disco staple "I Love the Nightlife."
"Bill Lowery was a genius when it came to spotting talent and hit songs,"
said U.S. Sen. Zell Miller, D-Ga.
The Lowery Group office is lined with gold and platinum albums and other
awards. And in 1969, Broadcast Music Inc. named the group the No. 1 music
publishing house in the country.
His company's catalog of 7,000 songs includes songs by such writers as Joe
South, Mac Davis, Jerry Reed and Buddy Buie.
"He was one of the very best song men in the business," said Frances
Preston, president and chief executive of BMI. "Never have I doubted anything
he
played for me. He is up in the top five of publishers in the world."
Lowery is survived by his wife, Billie Lowery; a son, two daughters, eight
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Friday afternoon at H.M. Patterson & Son,
Oglethorpe Hill.
