Hi All, I'm new to the list and just wanted to post a few thoughts
regarding the Bristol show if I may.
Having been a massive fan of The Sats and Dan since the eighties it
was kinda surprising this was my first time seeing Dan and his band.
Owning all his solo albums I kinda knew what to expect........or so
I thought.
I have never been to the St. Bonaventure Club before and thought it
was a great place, (more power to them…..we need more venues in
Bristol like this), met Dan straight of and he was great, stood
there and patiently signed all the CD's I had with me and posed for
a photo with me….what a great start to the night.
The band took the (small) stage and ripped into "Rock around the
Clock", sounded to me as though they threw that one in to get some
sort of sound check.
What followed was the best damn 2 hours of American Bar Room Redneck
Rock 'N' Roll that I've ever witnessed. As I said before I thought I
knew what to expect but I never prepared for this. The energy of the
show was full on from start to finish, as it's been stated before
the band were just dripping in sweat like they'd taken showers fully
clothed. The interplay between the band is second to none, Dan's
knowledge of the Boogie riff and Rock `N' Roll rhythm guitar is
complemented by Ken's Rock 'N' Roll fuelled lead breaks while Keith
lays down an understated Bass line that rumbles alongside Mauro's
powerhouse Drumming.
The set list was perfect, a natural blend of Sats and Dan's solo
work with a few covers thrown in for good measure.
Tracks from "In the land of Salvation and Sin" just burst out of the
speakers sounding more vibrant and alive than they did when I first
heard them 16 years ago.
I just couldn't believe where the time went, one minute the band
were walking on stage and then in a flash, that was it.....they were
saying goodnight, I thought they were just getting going
with "Hush"......The appreciative crowd roared their approval and
the band dutifully returned, Dan strode back on stage for a solo
spot on "Another Chance" and then the rest of the guys joined him to
end the night.
Wow, what a great, great night. We hung around for a while after and
spoke to the guys and told them how much we appreciated such a great
night.
It was nice leaving into the cold night air with ears ringing to the
best damn music on the planet…….my face was beginning too hurt
though after grinning from ear to ear all night, was that really it,
my buddy and I (Big Rob) started thinking……..
Six O'clock Wednesday night the door bell rings, there stands Big
Rob, "Okay mate you ready he says", "Yep sure am" I reply as we we
start heading up the M4 to Dudley JB's.
We arrive at the venue to find it almost deserted but for a handful
of film makers getting their cameras situated in anticipation of the
evenings proceedings.
We're told by Mick from Jerkin' Crocus that tonights show is being
filmed for a DVD release.
The crowd is unexpectedly (and disappointingly) small as Spike from
the Quireboys gets introduced by Dan. Spike and his two Acoustic
touting buddies run through the Quireboys hits and a couple of
covers……..I've seen the Quireboys a number of times over the last 17
years and feel they could be much better if Spike acted a little
more professional by staying sober, you know theres a good
performance in there somewhere but it's always let down by the booze.
On the other hand I'm doubting there's a bad performance in Dan and
Homemade Sin, they take to the stage and continue where they left
off in Bristol on Monday night. If anything there's a little more
intensity in the performance…….Ken's on fire tonight burning up the
fretboard while Dan cranks out riff after riff of Shit Hot Rockin',
these guys just don't stop smiling and fooling around, but the great
thing is they never seem to miss a beat, well, maybe they do, but
you're having too much fun to notice or care.
The set list is similar to Monday night but not exact, quite frankly
though I could listen to this every night over and over.
The evenings proceedings are wrapped up with the band being joined
by Spike and friends for a rousing rendition of "Battleship Chains"
neither Dan or Spike completely sure of the lyrics.
What a great night again, if you aren't planning to see one of the
shows on this current tour because it's maybe too far away…I'd say
think again….I attend probably 30 concerts/gigs a year all over the
country and these are the best shows I've seen for a long long
time……….
Anway, I've rambled long enough, thanks for letting me tell you all
about it.
I'm just off to look for my Road Map of the UK……..
Ummm, I wonder how far it is from Bristol to Alloa
