Welcome!

I have never been to RCMH but after 9/11 security was
tighter all over.
At McCartney and U2 shows in Chicago I got through
metal detector wand checks with no problem.
The metal detectors have adjustable sensitivity and
they are looking for guns and large metal objects.
I keep loose change near my deck so if the ask I just
pull out a bunch of quarters.
Others have metal belt buckles.

I have just joined this group and want to introduce myself. I live
in New Jersey in the US and am a fan of various types of music. This
summer I started recording audio at Bon Jovi arena concerts and
according to some have produced some really good audience
recordings. I use a Core Sound set up and capture to a Dell Axim. I
use Gidluck Mastering's LIVE2496 software on the Dell.

Obviously one of my favorite groups was Led Zeppelin and David
Gilmour has just seemed to get better with age.

I actually found gilmour2006tourTapers@yahoogroups.com while
searching for information on the relative ease or difficulty of
bringing a recording rig into Radio City Music Hall (RCMH). The last
two times I was there I was attending political events post 9/11 and
the security was high, including walk through metal detectors.
Before that I had attended a Fogerty concert but don't recall any
security measures, but it was pre 9/11.

So, that's a bit about me, and if anyone has information about
bringing in to RCMH it would be appreciated.
Tks
Paul

i've been taping on DAT since around '94-'95, & use nothing but the more
affordable "data" tapes, never had any problems caused specifically from the
data tapes that i know of - my decks are a sony d7, sony d100, tascam da-20,
and tascam da-20 mkII

my original tascam, the da-20, eventually had head problems but i think that
is from the ton of mileage i put on it back in the old DAT trading days
rather than from using data tapes themselves

the past couple years i exclusively use SONY DGP60meter and 90meter tapes
since they are so affordable (less than $3 each); prior to that i used to
use maxell HS/4s but maxell changed something about them at one point and my
tascam home decks had problems tracking the new HS4s so i switched to the
sonys; prior to that i used KAOs and also AMPEX DDS, neither of which i
think have been made for a long time

i've heard that the 90 meter tapes are more prone to problems than 60 meter
tapes, either causing more wear & tear on the deck heads or other parts, or
that the tape themselves could just screw up more easily, but i don't know
if any of that is true or not - if i remember right the manual that comes
with the sony d7 & d100 says to only use up to 60 meter tapes in them though

however i don't want to go back to the old days of having to do cassette
tapeflips during a show, so i chose to risk the possible "dangers" of using
a 90meter tape if i am taping a show in the 2-3 hour range; i only use the
90s then, but use the 60meters for everything else

here's something wierd to mention though - am wondering if anyone else has
noticed this - as per DAThead guidelines i always "retention" (fast fwd &
rewind) a tape b4 using it; and to do this i use my old tascam deck to
prevent any wear & tear on my new decks btw....and a friend of mine who only
has one DAT deck, a sony m1, he gives me his new tapes to do the
retentioning for him, so as to save wear and tear on his deck....and last
week he brought over a box of new SONY DGP 60m tapes....and we noticed how
the SONYs are different now...different shell/graphics on 'em
etc.....and....alarmingly 4 out of 10 of the new SONY's jammed in my tascam
when loading, crimping part of the tape or leader!!!!! had to take 'em out
& wind the tape by hand back into the shell and try again b4 they would
load/ffwd/rewind......has anyone noticed any problems loading the new
SONY's???

> From your guys' experience, shuold I be ponying up for the 'way more
> expensive' shorter/'actual DAT' tapes?

IMO, no

i would stick with the less expensive data tapes

i would also still use the 90meters, but ONLY when i need to

you have to weigh the pluses/minuses/risks for yerself though - "YMMV" as
they say

> Does this eliminate those 'digi-zaps'? I have heard from a taper friend
> here that they can be unavoidable

the digi-zaps *should* be 100% avoidable but you'll have to figure out what
they are or what's causing 'em

how old is your deck? how much use has it had? do you notice "digi-zaps"
playing back anyone else's tapes? has it been checked/cleaned/serviced
recently? maybe it just needs a good cleaning/alignment/something

i'd consider at the very least taking a peek into the deck & make
sure it looks clean in there - get this - the taper friend i mentioned above
was having problems with digital noise on some tapes....we took a look at it
& saw that it had a piece of stuck hair in it!!!!!!!!!!!! shit happens

also - are the digizaps you noticed on your tapes during playback always in
the same place? i mean, are they artifacts of recording, or playback?
there's various possibilities what they could be from.....also, sometimes
you can get "zaps"/noises that aren't artifacts of the
heads/playback/recording of the deck, but could be due to something more
like a loose connection in yer mics

good luck!

For those hitting the Rosemont shows the security is
usually pretty easy.
I went attended back to back Neil Young shows and for
the second I brought in 2 cans of pop with no problem.
They will look at purses, bags and backpacks but
usually nothing more.
That being said I won't be taking any chances as these
promise to be fantastic shows.

Another thing about the Rosemont shows the Chicago
crowds sometimes can be lass than courteous.
I was at the 99 Waters show and there was a noticable
run for the lobby bar as Roger went into his solo
stuff.
Anyone who has heard the tape will hear Roger slipping
into the old Roger mode trying to quiet people down.
There was a great moment on the Greendale tour where
Neil told some guy who was yelling "fuck you".

I have over 200 shows most of which are with 90 meter
tapes without a single problem in my D8 or M1.
90 meter tapes are a matter of choice I can't fault
anyone for opting for 60 meter tapes.
Maxell has made audio 90 meter tapes for the Japan
market for some time now, I have received a dozen in
trades.

I have some KAO brand 90's I reserve for *special*
shows I think these will be KAO shows......

Alan,
My understanding is that the data tapes are at least
the same quality as the audio dats. I use the data
tapes. However, there are some who think that the 90m
tapes (3 hours) are thinner and more succeptable to
stretching. I prefer to use the 60m tapes for that
reason. I have not had any digital spikes, so I cannot
comment on that.
My rig is simple - Core sound cardiods or binaurals
depending on the taping location or venue, into a core
sound battery box/roll off filter, into a sony M1 dat
deck.
I plan on changing tape during the intermission, which
I dont record. (I also change batteries then) I always
stealth except on accident. I passed thru security one
time having forgotten to place my rig in it's hiding
place - so I showed the security guy the top of the
deck, and other stuff. He must have had booze blinders
on. Let me right in. I think the best source for
taping policy would be the venue's policy. The venue
I'll be attending doesn't allow taping, so I'll be
stealthing. Also, keep a tape, label it as a data back
up. I back up my server daily onto dat and would give
that tape up if possible.
For transfers to computer, I am using an M-Audio 2496
digital soundcard, so I am unable to offer an opinion
for your transfer question.

Hello Tim, Simon, et all

...so freakin cool to see this setlist.  I must wait a month, boohoo.

So using my 'new math'...looks like set 1 @ less than 60 mins...with 20 minute break.  With Simons idea of Echeos + WYWH + CN rounding out at 35 mins...that gives us ~65 mins for the start of Set2 and ~100 mins in total.

So we got around 160 mins of music...maybe ending up on 2 cd's...but I'd like some help w/ DAT Tapes.  I have always used Sony's DG90P's, which give you 3:07 on SP, and require no taoe change for 2-set shows like these.  I know some folks, like Sony people, and maybe some here, will say these are 'data' and not 'DAT', and these can cause problems.  What tapes does everyone use?

With that said, I use AT831>battery box>M1.  I have had a few shows where I get some 'digi-zaps', lasting fractions of seconds.  Most shows have been flawless however.  I almost always stealth, whether I have to or not, due to my rig, thats all I got...

From your guys' experience, shuold I be ponying up for the 'way more expensive' shorter/'actual DAT' tapes?  Does this eliminate those 'digi-zaps'?  I have heard from a taper friend here that they can be unavoidable...and I'd rather not deal with tape changes...you know.

Also, what/if any 'official taper policy' exists for Gilmour 2006 edition?

Another area I need help is with this new Edirol, USB->Digital Audio converter.  Now that I have it, seems like it would be easy...but I am not getting it.  What software is needed to go 'to DAT' and/or 'from DAT'?

I've come a long way from my MD>SP Sony mics at RFH in 2002, but still learning as I go...

Simon,
Thanks, I meant dat tapes and was using length, 60m =
120 minutes. Looks like set 1 was under 60 minutes?
What is the length of time for set 2 and encores?
Thanks,

I've come a long way from my MD>SP Sony mics at RFH in 2002, but still learning as I go...

hey simon!

glad to hear your going on tour for a while...I'm jealous!  I'm bummed, as is Steveo, that you wont make it to Oakland.  I have been taping like mad since 2002...about 65 or 70 sources.  How are you and Phil?  Res of the possie?

Gonna catch Doyle this summer too? even though it merans seeing Eric also?

hope your well...

Peace

Al

Just noticed a few familiar names on here, hope everyones well,
nothing like a few gigs to bring everyone out again huh!:)

Im doing the following gigs and will be wired up like a mixing desk
at Abbey Road!! What i dont want to do is audio record the shows if
theres others going to be doing them, id prefer to record onto the
media that im known for and hook it up with superior audio at a later
date for everyones enjoyment. My audio rigs no where near what im
sure a few guys on here have.

I'll be at the following Gilmour shows:

Paris x 2
Frankfurt
Amsterdam x 2

New York x 2
Toronto x 2
Chicago x 2

Manchester, UK
Glasgow, UK
London x 3.

And the following Waters shows:

Verona, Italy x 2
Berlin
Ireland
London
Switzerland

Is there anyone that can do a spreadsheet type thing to see whos
doing what with what ?

Would be great to meet up with some of you guys aswell. Loadstone,
Big Al and anyone else out there that will cross paths with!
regards
Si

Hey peeps. 100% agreed. I taped Plant here in 05 and the room
totally rocks. Best part is they dont check shit upon entry
and 'ushers' are so old and clueless, they prevent drinking and most
smoking from heppenning, but wouldn't know the first thing to be
worried about when a guy in some hat starts looking in his 'man
bag'...

I have an serious audiophile buddy here in bay Area who also concurs
on the sound quality in Paramount.

I am ticketed in lower orchestra for Sunday night show, and will be
trying for Monday tix this Saturday in public onsale.

If any good singles for Monday are out there, i can help remedy
that...

cant wait for this.

If anyone wants or needs, my MD Sources of Royal Festival Hall shows
2&3 from January 2002(17(w/ Geldorf)&18(w Bush)) sound excellent
after mastering to CD. There are probably numerous DAT sources of
those shows available, but I have what I have...have upgraded gear
since.

If you want to work a trade or something, let me know.

Peace
Al

Hello,

I see there has been some question as to the sound dynamics of the
hall so I thought I'd add my $.02 worth. I have not personally been
to the hall to see a show; however, my best friend who I'll be
attending this show is a serious audiophile and has confirmed the
following:

The hall is the BEST sounding acoustical indoor venue of its size on
the West coast of the US. This goes up against the Pantages Theater
(which he ranked a close 2nd) in Los Angeles, as well as the Dorothy
Chandler Pavillion in Los Angeles. This theater, he states, also
outranks the Paramount Theater in Seattle and the Schnitzer
Auditorium in Portland for acoustics.

His hint implied, when I asked him about the sound for my own
interests, that this hall was constructed in such a way that "every
seat is a great sounding seat". This is from someone who has
experience in all arenas on the West coast and sees all forms of
music. His last show at this specific auditorium was the Rite of
Strings (Al Dimeola, Stanley Clark & Jean Luc Ponty) several years
back.

I think you all will have great results recording in this hall,
providing you know how to use your devices effectively.

John,
I'll be in the balcony on the 16th and in the orch
row 3 on the 17th. I figured that I'd use binaural
mikes for up close and cardiods from the balcony.
I've got no experience with the venue - Im coming in
from out of state. I see on their website the offer
that they have considerable security measures.
Share any info you get please!

Hello All,

I'm in San Francisco and have tickets to the 4/16/6 show at the
Paramount Theater. I've got seats in the middle of the balcony and
also tickets in the middle of the Orchestra.

Any tips on recording in the Paramount and where the best sound will
be (balcony versus orchestra)?

Cheers,

John

There was a Holiday Inn right across the street but it
changed names.
There is a Motel 6 down the road within walking
distance they list it at 0.8 mi and cheap.

Hey Gilmour Tapers and Freaks!

I'll be at oakland both nights, but only have tix for Sunday night
4/16...in row 20 or so. I forget the letter.

I'll be running AT835 into my M1, in super stealth mode. If you are
taping in oakland, never fear, this venue does not check bags, nor do
they pat down at all! Praise to that!

cannot wait. If anyone has aqn extra for me for 4/17, lemme know,
altrhough more go onsale Saturday at noon and I'll be all over it!
