If you're just interested in watching them, you can go to
launch.yahoo.com and go to their Deee-Lite section.

The links in that message were for Hi-Net Recorder. They worked when
I posted them, I don't know if they still do.

Well, actually you do own the song if you write it. I think it makes
perfect sense that if I write a song, someone wanting to make money
off the same tune should pay its due or get permission. I'm sure Deee-
Lite members would feel a bit cheated if a band made a remix of their
songs without their permission and released an album.

The same argument applies to the Lady Kier - Ulala case. It would be
like saying Lady Kier doesn't own her image just because she came up
with it first. The result is obvious: everyone would make easy money
using other people's music, lyrics, and images...and the whole music
industry would become more crazy than it already is.

Another case that comes to my mind is the fact that the Ghostbusters
theme stole its music from Huey Lewis and the News, after they
declined an offer to make the music for the film. I mean, can you
just take someone's song and use it as you please with the logic
that "you don't own that song, just cuz you came out with it prior"?

I strongly disagree with you! An artist has every
right to sue if someone is sampling their song or
remaking their song. There is something called
artistic integrity and people who have to sample other
peoples songs and remake other songs have none. Why
can't they write their own damn music. I hate when
these losers have to sample 9 #1's in each song they
do because they don't have the talent to actually
write something themselves. Creativity is dead in this
country and I'm really angry about it. Old TV shows
becoming movies, all the sampling going on, remakes
it's PATHETIC and uninspiring. Their is a new
generation of people who think being a real musician
is about sampling and remakes and that scares the hell
out of me! It's like everybody ran out of ideas and
the world is coming to an end or something and I
totally despise people who are OK with this. Yeah
Deee-lite has used samples but they are so obscure,
you would never know where they got the sample from.
Plenty of there songs are original though. My favorite
thing about Deee-lite was that they were ORIGINAL and
were bringing something new to the table and THAT'S
inspiring.

Does anyone know why Kier, is sayin' release me, release me, over and
over in the greyhound remix of Runaway in a powerful voice.
Hmmmmm.... My guess is she's responding to all the people who keep
wondering what her ethnicity is. And if she's a light-skinned black
lady. I haven't always known Kier. I found out 3 years ago, that we
where related. Her mom Alice, told me that own her father Fred side,
that she's Irish and Polish or Russian and on her side, she's Irish.
I know that alot of the songs and lyrics from Infinity Within were
wrote about their feelings on the Rodney King verdict and police
beatings and LA riots in 1992. I like in this article I kept, calling
them slick.

Dude, that's some weird guessing. "ALL the people who KEEP wondering
what her ETHNICITY is?" Who the heck are those people and among all
things why would they care about her ethnicity? It's not like she
looks a bit black or Chinese.

My guess for why she says "release me" over and over in the remix is
because it's a REMIX.

was being sacastic when I said that. My feelings will never change on

see my side. I feel different though when people or actors do
parodies of something or parodies in their songs.

You mentioned a song you wrote. So, by your logic you wouldn't mind
if I get a hold of your song and release it in Turkey with Turkish
lyrics or if I make an ice-cream commercial jingle out of it to make
good money?

No, if you really would not sue me, I'd love to do that and make some
cash from your song. And I'd have it in writing what you say so that
you wouldn't be able to sue me later.

Its just lyrics, no music was made to go along with it. As long as,

No music? So when you said:

"In my new documentary
film, "The Last Record Store" I sing a song called, "Imitation Of
Another Life" which I wrote from my heart and about my father. It was
a song that was gonna be realeased as a single off my debut solo
album, "Lighting Fury." "

So you sing a song without music? So it was basically a poem you
wanted to release?

"My friend Bill, hurt me deeply when he kept
sayin' I didn't write it, that I stole in from Neil Young cuz it
sounds exactly the same. I never heard Neil's music. "

And here you meant that you never read Neil's lyrics, I guess.

Sorry for the confusion!

on the subject of "copying" or sampling music, I was wondering if any
knew about Towa Tei's song "Forget Me Nots". I just got his "BEST"
album and it has Forget me Nots. I was surprised to hear the bassline
that is used in Will Smith's Men In Black song (the original one).

Who copied who?!

Did Towa create the bassline first, and Will Smith sampled it for Men
In Black? Or is it the other way around?

Any ideas? Facts would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Patrice Rushin did the original in 1982, they both copied and George Michael sampled it in Fast Love.

I'm pretty sure both W.Smith and Towa bought the rights to "cover" it.

George Michaeal's song Fast Love has like 3-4 melodies in it and
the "Sending you forget me nots" part is sung by a female vocalist
towards the end of the song. So, yes it's a sample but the song could
exist without that sample.

In the Men in Black song however, the whole song contains the Forget
me Nots melody. Instead of "Sending you forget me nots, to help me to
remember" the lyrics are changed to say "Here come the Men in Black,
galaxy defenders". The rest of the song is basically Will Smith
rapping, so there's really no melody in the MIB song besides the
Forget me Nots.

I'm not sure how the Towa version is, but if it doesn't sound too
different then I'd say he could have done something more original.

Mike I advise you to send an e-mail to the address on Kier's site
asking for the address. The only Triangle Arts Centre I found on the
net is in Birmingham. You never know, they might have made a mistake.

This whole samples and covers issue brought a few things to my mind.
People who are my age and older (I'm 27) recognize covers to be
covers, or recognize when a sample is used. However, I realized that
many people younger (or less interested in music in the past) really
don't know that some songs are covers.

For example, I remember a few years ago one of my friends said "Puff
Daddy is the greatest song writer ever. Just listen to 'I'll be
missing you'". So the guy had no clue that this was a re-make of The
Police's Every Breath You Take.

Anyways, I wanted to bring to your attention that before they
disbanded, Deee-Lite also covered a song, "You Sexy Thing" by Hot
Chocolate. It's available on the Dumb and Dumber soundtrack and quite
frankly I did not know about Deee-Lite doing this cover until 3 years
ago or so. I'd advise you to download it if you get the chance.

I had a little listen to a sample of the original.
Towa basically does a full cover of the song (sounds pretty much the
same, same lyrics etc). Though I think the ending of the song is
Towa's edition. It kinda goes off into a slithly weird bossanova
ending.

I never did nunthin with that song, or any of the other songs
off the album. I don't think it will even be completed, cuz I retired
from the acting/singing and porn business in January this year. All
the songs that I did are just poems/lyrics written on paper! That
songs for Jeff Liles documentary is without music. I asked him, if I
could record one or two songs on a demo for the soundtrack, and he
said no, cuz he's only gonna used international artist like Jeff
Beckley and Ben Harper. It would be cool if I would had did a cover
of Stacey Q's Incognito song, or Deee-lite Bittersweet Lovin' or Deep
Ending song or put music to my Imitation Of Another Life song or
another song I didn't finish called What They Following Me For. My
producer Jon St. James, you've probably heard of him, he's like a new
wave producer extradonaire, said he's retired now and said I'm gonna
have to find someone else to harrass, when I ask him is he ever gonna
produce it. My old High School band has music out there under A Deux
Voix which is rare if you can find it. Have you ever heard Love and
Bubbles or the old Shazork music from Deee-lite?

Divdev, if you've read my Deee-Liteful experience, you already know
how hard it was for me to get hold of anything related to Deee-Lite.
I didn't get to see the newsletters because the fan club was asking
for self-stamped envelopes to be sent so that the club would not have
to spend money on postage. As I did not live in the US, this was
impossible for me.

However, I did have a friend living in the US at the time and I asked
her to send a self-stamped envelope on my behalf and then mail me the
newsletter. I got very excited when the friend sent me the
newsletter...but it turned out to be that it was the very last of the
newsletters announcing that the fan club was closed. It had very
little other information in it, with the exception of the
announcement that Towa had a kid. It had a full page photo of the
baby. And that was the only newsletter I saw.

newsletters for $20 or your ebay objects. The same goes for the
guestbook on the main site. If that is your interest, I suggest you
make your own group or website.

I do not enjoy the idea of me making a group and then soemone
advertising their material for profit. You can ask people to cover
postage costs, that's a different issue.

I downloaded the video a month or so ago when I saw your message. One
caution I must give to anyone wanting to download is that you do not
hear what Deee-Lite is singing because someone put another song over
the sound. That's why the file is called "whatamIgonnado", cuz that's
the song you hear. I have no clue who sings it but it's definately
not someone who was present when they handed out voice talent.

it's Larry tee's song and i think it is way before 1992
it maybe one of the earliest performence i guess around 1989
it's a shame that we can not see the original
because i think it's interesting to see were they came from as in
how they started but i know that months ago they also showed interviews
with Deee-lite but i can't find them now
i think if you need to find really old stuff off them you need to be here
(funtone)
it's seems to be the really old clique

Yeah I know that. I only told you about the fact that I too did not
get the chance to get the newsletters.

Dear Members,

I'm not going to go into too many details, but if you see someone
called Edward Roark saying that he's Lady Kier's cousin, please do
not believe him.

But most important, do not give him any of your personal information
(especially phone and home address) for whatever purpose it might be.

Sincerely,
Hakan
