Subject: Tribute to Rosalyn Tureck tonight, July 17, 2003
johsebastian...
Send Email Send Email

I apologize for the short notice about this event, but better late than
never. I also apologize for any duplicate postings.

Tonight, July 17, 2003, at 8:00, as a part of the International Keyboard
Institute at the Mannes College of Music, 150 West 85th Street, New York, NY
10024, a tribute will be held to honor the great American pianist, Rosalyn
Tureck.
This tribute is open to the public, and I understand that admission is free.

In addition to a selection of video excerpts and recordings of Rosalyn
performing, there will be several live performances by students and friends of
Rosalyn's, and three long time friends and colleagues will speak about various
aspects of her life and career.

Rosalyn, who, sadly, is not well, will not be able to attend the evening, but
I understand that she has prepared a greeting to the audience, which will be
read on her behalf by her long time friend, Michael Charry.

The Master of Ceremonies for the evening is David Dubal, pianist, author,
lecturer, and the host of the WQXR program "Reflections from the Keyboard".

I look forward to seeing you at this event honoring one of the greatest
keyboard players of the 20th century and of all time.

Hello....I'm new/back to this group. Just thought I'd perhaps start a
little(?) discussion. I think Gould butchered as many Bach pieces as
he did wonderfully. Sometimes WAY too fast; other times distractingly
too slow. I will, however, admit that his definition of note and line
was never blurred in either his slow or fast transgressions.

Fire back when ready.

Thanks to all,
summing up all answers from the groups where this little poll was posted,
the results so far are:
  book I:
  C minor - 5 votes
C# minor - 3
Db major - 1
E major - 1
F minor - 2
F# major - 2
F# minor - 1
Ab major - 1
B minor - 1
  book II:
  D minor - 1
Eb major - 2
E major - 1
G minor - 3
Ab major - 2
Bb minor - 1
B major - 1
C minor (book I) and G minor (book II) are therefore the most appreciated.
Fugues in minor keys got 17 votes (61%) while fugues in major ones received
11 (39%). Is beauty more easily found in music in minor keys...?
Well, since the number of answers is low we shouldn't extract any clear or
remarkable general preference, but it probably might give a first glance to
what the average taste would be. Interesting!
  Dani
