I was sent this very disturbing e-mail by hard-workin WPRB long-running
Music Dept exec Kelsey. Needless to say, this enraged me greatly. This (to
me anyway) would very put a grievous dent in the promotion of any true
'underground' culture in this area. Please read away:
If you want to keep this station alive as you know it and remain DJs at one
of
the most important and historical independent radio stations IN THIS NATION,
please please please READ THIS.
Theo, our new station manager is about to send you an email about grave
events
taking place with our trustees (a group of alum DJs who in effect run
Princeton
Broadcasting Service, that owns WPRB). However, Luke Goodwin (lmgoodwi@ our
outgoing business director) and I could not stand to have you guys unaware
of
some of the scariest and most important dialogue involving our station. So
we
write to you tonight to ask you to join us in keeping the station alive, and
letting you know what is going on.
The trustees are concerned that there is not enough student interest and we
are
not pulling in enough revenue- that is not to say that we are bankrupt or in
any
kind of emergency, but just that we are digging into our endowment to keep
WPRB
alive. But that is where we need YOU. We need students to show we care about
this station, that we have ideas, and that the last thing we want to do is
sell
this station. There has been proposals to turn us over to the university, to
turn us over to the county, to have more mainstream programming (Yes, maybe
even
Coldplay), and to bring in professional DJs to replace us. WXPN- penn's old
radio station suffered a similar fate, and while becoming a great financial
institution- now has professional djs, limited student "interns" and forced
the
DJs and board of the original radio station to scrape together funds and
start a
podcasting online-only radio station, that frankly can't deal with more than
a
dozen listeners. I grew up in Philadelphi
a and had the choice to listen to WXPN or WPRB, and frankly, nothing that is
special about college radio was kept within the new mission of WXPN. And
that
could be the fate of WPRB.
SO SHOW UP TO OUR TRUSTEES MEETING. And help us show them this is not what
any
of us want, and that if they decide to make these radical changes in WPRB,
we
will not be there to help them. 10:30 AM, saturday morning, FRIST 309! Bring
friends, bring ideas, bring sales pitches, bring your brains and
record-spinning
hands. And show our trustees that maybe they have forgotten what the
community
of WPRB is all about.
Non-student DJs- you are all invited too, and msot importantly, you must
also
show up and show our trustees that we are not willing to change our
programming,
you like the freeformat we provide, and that even as non-students, this is a
valuable tool for the community-which is why you are here.
Also, a new wprb-list will be started where ALL djs can post, so that we can
talk about these events in a public forum, but also talk about what we are
all
here for: music (as our yahoo group is essentially dead). I'll keep you
posted.
If you have questions, comments, ideas, concerns. Please e-mail myself,
Luke,
Will Sullivan, or Theo Ellis and we will be happy to elaborate further.
Beyond
SATURDAY 10:30AM FRIST 309, you can help us by also bringing your ideas to
office hours which will start at 2! tomorrow afternoon (extended office
hours
due to the circumstances).
Thanks for your time, and hope to see you ALL there.
See you saturday (be there, or be a top 40 station. ew.)

I'm certainly not forwarding this in order just to save my own on-air
skin, but for all / any hope for maintaining the various forms of music
programming that have flourished at 'PRB (avant / jazz / independent /
soul-funk / even their fine morning classical programming). To replace it
with tepid media in order to please the populus (who already have enough
radio stations to please their wiped grey matter) and ivy-league
shareholders (don't even get me started on this abominable talking point)
would be a mortal sin (not the good kind, either).
I realise that WPRB may not be the only NJ outlet for independent
programming.. certainly out friends at WFMU continue to do stellar work in
this field (even though I myself have great difficulty picking them upin my
area, most unfortunate for me). Plus there are other smaller college
stations in the area, though I'm not sure on their status as far as outsider
programming. But I do know WPRB has continued to serve the tri-state
community in providing an alternative to mainstream media..
Please feel free to give me or the station (contact should be at
wprb.com) a shout back on your thought s on the situatioin. Sorry this
e-mail came out a bit long-winded, but I have very strong feelings about
this subject.
Thank you for your time, best- DRx (Don Rettman)
