Hey Sandy, thanks for your mini-review. Sorry we missed the show. We
are looking forward to a weekend trip to Philadelphia in December, and
catching a performance of "Stiking 12".

I read that the crowd was small at Kingston. Was it smaller than the
room's capacity? What's your guess at the approximate number in the
audience?

Rob.didn't get an exact count but I'd put attendance at about 40 or 50 which
was about half of what the room could comfortably hold (probably could have
pushed as high as 125 or so with chairs at the end of the pews and way in
back.

GrooveLily Pad friends,

As a friendly reminder, when posting Photos to the group's photo page
(http://groups.yahoo.com/group/groovelily/photos), please remember to:

(1) Create an Album (folder) for your shots

(2) Deselect the default opton to "Keep original version for ordering prints."
This default causes your photos to take up additional storage space (space which
is rather limited for our Group). This is VERY important. If we run out of
space, then I will have no choice but to remove those photos that are taking up
excessive space.

If anyone knows how to change the default photo storage option mentioned in
item #2 above, please let me know.

Thanks for your cooperation!

Ok, don't know what happened to that last one I tried to send. It
went something like this.....
I took a quick count a the beginning of the show & got 34.
That left Sissy and Bobby plenty of room for dancing in the front row.
My bumper sticker is now in place. I hope it drums up some curiosity
around town.

Hi Brad,
Bumper stickers are being given out free at shows with any merchandise
purchase. I'm not sure if any plans have been made to include them with
purchases made at the GL website.

OK, so no strangers have approached me to ask what GrooveLily is, but
a few friends have said "YOU, put a bumper sticker on YOUR car?"
Yes I did. So there. I haven't had a bumper sticker on a car
since...uh.... Gee, did I EVER have one?
When I got my first car twenty three years ago(at the age of 6)I
decided not to clutter it up, but to keep it 'classy.' Now, several
sticker-less cars later, I've decided to take the plunge. To share my
joy. To spread the word. I hope it helps.
(that big giant dent in the trunk should attract some attention. Then
folks can gaze all they want at the big giant GL sticker.)

Hey Charles!

Wow is Peter Frampton looking old.

Regarding Striking 12 at the Prince, we are looing at the weekend of
December 21st. I'm not sure of the specific show yet. There are three
other Petal Pushers that have (so far) expressed interest in attending
a show this weekend (about 12 people in total). I'll let you know the
final decision.

Hi All,
It doesn't look like the 12/21 week-end will work for us. We're
planning on going in for one of the early preview shows and then again for
the 12/31 closing show. If the 12/21 weekend doesn't work for anyone else
(or you just want to catch the show again), we can certainly organize
multiple PP trips down there.

Hey, Dave!

What "preview" weekend were you looking at? Sandy, Mark and Jack and
I were talking about going in for one of them also (although I can't
remember which one it was at the moment).

Let me know and maybe we can meet up!

A fairly critical review:

Date: Sat, 09 Nov 2002
From: Rich Brown
To: folkmusic@...
Subject: [FM] Groovelily concert

Last night was the premiere performance of Groovelily, in St. Louis.
A trio of accomplished musicians and singers, who currently have a
pretty good, and well-deserved buzz on the internet music sites. I
had previously heard only one of their songs on local community radio
station KDHX and so had little foreknowledge of these performers.

The trio consists of a keyboard player, violinist, and drummer and
they seem to make power trio a goal if not a definition of the band.
They started out at a musical dead run, finished full-out and pretty
much blazed through the middle. That would be my first criticism of
the concert. There was virtually no pacing and dynamics. My
favorite performers all take you through a range of emotional
experience in their songs. It is a formula that few can successfully
violate to start with some of your strongest material, rapidly bring
things to a boil, then move into a slow simmer for a while, and finish
up with the pot boiling over.

The violinist has an unusual 6 string violin, which she plays with
expertise and speed. I would have preferred a higher sound from the
instrument. They mixed it bassy which may have been what her
preference was considering the extra 2 strings seemed to be lower
range than a standard violin, but the last time electric violin
knocked me out was in the 70's as practiced by McKendree Spring. Ms.
Vigoda the violinist had a very strong voice, which was over used.
If you can sing loud and strong, you shouldn't use it that way in
every song that you sing lead.

The drummer was rock steady and proved his versatility with an
extended scat singing solo.

The keyboard player was a joy to listen to and watch, but was a
little too soft in the mix. Again strong vocals, and the songwriting
was pretty high quality. I particularly liked a song about Hwy.95
called Can You Believe. I think in 10 years or so it will evolve
into a full-blown reggae tune.

The trio seems to have considerable experience in the music biz and
from comments overheard the band may have had several incarnations.
I will be looking forward to watching their musical evolution next
time around. They certainly should get a listen from the rock and
rollers on this list.

From my friend Lois:

oh my gosh! they were *fantastic*!!! i am so glad that i finally
got to see them. the venue was very small and there were probably
only 40 people there, but the crowd made up for its size with
enthusiasm. the group seemed to really enjoy themselves. i got the
chance to talk to all of them after the show, and they were quite
excited when i mentioned your name. "how do you know john?!?" "hey,
it's john's birthday!!" "go get val!" it was a blast! i picked up
the new live cd (and gene pointed out that i was the first one to get
it signed). i assumed you probably preordered the new cd, otherwise
i would have gotten it for you as a birthday gift. : )

i went with a friend of mine who had never heard of them but is
always up for new music experiences and trusts my judgment -- he
really enjoyed the show. we arrived really early, and plopped
ourselves down in the front row on val's side of the stage. since we
were so close i was able to snag val's copy of the set list once the
show was over. i'm kicking myself a little bit for not having seen
them sooner, but i'm so thrilled to have gotten to see them and am
trying to figure out when i can get to another show. i'd love
to get them into a club here. i think they'd be a big hit on campus.

i hope you had a great birthday! i certainly had a wonderful time on
your birthday! : )

Hey John,

First thing, belated happy birthhtday. I missed it again this year !
:-)

Thanks for sharing these perspectives on the recent (11/8) GrooveLily
performance at the Focal Point in Maplewood (St Louis), MO.

It is interesting to hear other people's perspectives on things (no
matter how wrong they me be! :) While the attached is (perhaps overly)
critical, I thought the comments were on average positive. You can't
please everyone, or you'll end up pleasing no one.

Hard to comment on the pacing issue without knowing the set list, but
perhaps Rich Brown is more accustom to a more traditional "folk"
pacing, rather than a rock-influenced pacing.

> ... called Can You Believe. I think in 10 years or so it
> will evolve into a full-blown reggae tune.

Say what! "Can You Beleive" a reggae tune? No I can't. Is this an
attempt at humor, or did the band play a really funky version of "my"
song. :)

i *finally* got to see groovelily this weekend! all i can say is
GO!! go see them where ever you have the chance (my 3 hour drive
each way was more than worth it) and/or go order their cds! they are
incredible. they were very excited when i told them that i found
them because valerie (vocalist and violinist) had toured with joe.
brenden, the keyboard player, asked me if i was a long-time joe fan
(the answer, of course, was yes), and he commented that he was too
and that he really admires joe. they were also mightily impressed
that i knew the infamous john nyman. : ) they are fabulous
musicians, who cover a wide range of subjects and moods. plus, they
have a wicked sense of humor!

Ellie,

Try resending. I believe this address gets forwarded toVal. An e-mail I
addressed directly to Val in the same timeframe bounced. I've since
resent and it seemed to go through.

Thanks, Rob. I tried resending it twice that night and once again
yesterday and it still didn't work.

Perhaps I'll give it another shot today!
