Great night at the Purple Turtle on Thursday. Fantastic value too at £5 for five
bands! I think Nomi sorted out the line-up, so well done for such an eclectic
and interesting selection. We got:
'Schools' Weird band. Enormous array of foot pedals, they were kind of a
math-rock band with bonkers time changes all topped with bizarre 80's AOR
vocals. Never seen anything like them.
'Exit International. Pontypridd based trio with two bassists (one trebly, one
bassy) and drums topped with screamo vocals. Very original and energetic. I
liked them a lot, and managed to get a free demo from singer 'Fudge'. Only
recorded a few days ago too.
'Trophy Hearts'. London four piece. Interesting musical work, but let down by
rather tuneless vocals. Get a separate vocalist who can sing, and they would be
much improved.
'The Dogbones'. The reason I am here tonight (obviously). Carrying on their
recent habit of playing half a set of Crispin songs, with Crispin on guitar and
Nomi on bass; and half a set of Nomi songs, with Nomi on guitar and Crispin on
bass. Fantastic energy and passion from the band. They should be headlining
venues like this now. There are a few photos in the group's 'photos' section to
get a flavour of things.
'Widows'. Another side project from the Dogbones 'spare' drummer Jaemi
consisting of vocals (delivered in a 'Nick Cave' style), two guitars, Jaemi on
bass, a stand-up drummer, and a Japanese keyboard/violinist. Interesting, with a
kind of rockabilly feel. Hardly headliner material compared with the Dogbones
though...
